  • The narrator is probably the voice inside Barbara's head. Next year, we see Barbara in a straight jacket in a 1950's insane asylum, trying to understand what is real and what isn't, constantly being berated by a woman that no one else can hear...

  • Jan Brady's grandmother

  • I hate Helen. I bet she's the narrator's daughter.

  • "Deviant?" That makes it sound like Barbara was late for school because she had a rotating, vibrating butt plug up her crotch and was burning her nipples with a lit cigarette while ogling a a sexy picture of Vladimir Lenin.

  • @JNathanK2011 you know, only the last part about Lenin sounded deviant. I know plenty of women who start their day that way.

I wish I was kidding. I really do.

  • @JNathanK2011 oh, so THAT'S deviant. I had my suspicions--but what the heck, Vlad Lenin, Vlad the impaler...all those bad Vlads.

  • Late for school....'added nothing to a conversation',......didn't clean fingernails...might as well have a nervous breakdown.

  • Narrator is a brutal bitch isn't she? They were quite demanding back in the 50's.

  • "I still blame the parents"

  • "I blame the parents ! "

    ...as the saying goes

  • 1950s had a good way of putting people down eh?

  • what is this video about...?

  • Comment removed

  • Even Elizabeth Bennet would flip this people off.

  • And at school Helen turned into a total whore whenever someone offered her a ride... lol

  • Barbara was a punk rocker! Fuck off Helen! xD

  • how habits are formed: psychology and gender roles. search on youtube, I cant post the link but it's here.

  • @Dateline420 watch?v=Ilt89CMw9MA

  • the link in the description is only for the internet archive homepage but doesn't point to the video.

I'm trying to find it on IA but coming up empty. Any help?

  • @Dateline420 archive dot org/details/HabitPat1954

  • well, isn't helen just wonderful.

  • "‎You're a fat cow, Barbara. Forget about chasing boys like Helen does, you're happy just chasing a turkey leg on a string."

    Poor Barbara.

  • "Barbara, you're a piece of shit scum and should blow your brains out in the middle of class, you filthy useless bitch."

Wow, the things they passed off as "education" back then.

  • did barbara do the right thing and kill herself?????????? LOL

  • You kids don't know what you missed. But don't worry. If Santorum gets elected, your children will get to watch these films like we did. And probably get to wear those clothes too. Hehehe !

  • If I was Barbara, I would have became anti-social and rebellious, saying "SHUT UP STUPID VOICE INSIDE MY HEAD I KNOW I BEHAVE DEVIANTLY AND I"M PROUD OF IT!" lol hehe

  • They considered this deviant behavior? I think these people would kill themselves if they were around now.

  • isn't Helen much older than Barbra!

  • Poor Barbara!

  • heyy, looks like my life!

  • Comment removed

  • What is she talking about? That sounds like the 90's...

  • SHAME ON YOU BABARA - DIRTY LITTLE SLUT...

  • Yeah, but Barbara is hot. Joke's on you, Helen.

  • All this time and my skirt hasn't matched my sweater. I'm a dirty girl.

  • "It's a little late for tears isn't it Barbara."

"Yeah Barbara you fucking cunt! Why can't you be more like Helen!"

  • u mean non of this is real!!!!! ohoooo noooooo!!!!! signed Barbra

  • y was she crying in the end? was she pregnant?

  • barbra kinda reminds me of me in this vid O_O

  • @taureleafsilver lol ! i luv it !! the stick up for barbara club ! :)

  • Barbara should be exicuted

  • "It's a little late for tears, isn't it, Barbara?" reminds me of GLaDOS from Portal.

  • @EmeraldSky33 EXACTLY what I was about to comment XD

  • ironically barbara probably became a hooker and became the toast of the town to all the guys who don't care about fingernails

  • If your neighbors are monitoring whether you're late for school or not, it's time to move.

  • @jonb324 I agree. I can imagine the hen party that must have transpired over 10 am coffee with June and Harriet. I think Lucy and Ethel would have taken up for the poor girl, though.

  • depressing

  • "She knows how to match the right skirt with the right sweater." WOW!!! It didn't take much to impress adults in the 50s.......lol!!

  • Who would a 21st century employer rather give a job to? Barabara who is rude, flaky, unkempt and always late or Helen who has self-discipline and social skills?

Even if Barbara was that rare bird, the extremely gifted rebel out to break the rules and conquer the world, she won't get far without self-discipline and social skills.

Alas, 'self-discipline' and 'politeness' have become dirty words, getting confused with 'suppressing originality' or, Dog forbid!, 'crushing self-esteem'!

  • @Smallpotato1965 In the 21st century, somebody would recognize that Barbara probably has ADD and possibly even Asperger's. I've seen the whole video before, and she shows a lot of the signs. 50 years later, somebody would've recognized that this kid probably just has some kind of learning disorder and gotten her some help so she wouldn't be this way at 16, 17 years old.

  • @AIntellectualRedneck what is the name of this film? I want to try and find it.

  • @BrainDeadIntellect It's called "Habit Patterns"

  • @kashmirpage Damn thanks, that was great. I love these old educational films. Really digs deep into their society at the time as well as being unintentionally hilarious half the time.

  • @BrainDeadIntellect You're welcome. Go to the second link in the description here. You'll find a mess of these if you haven't already = D

  • @kashmirpage I did and have watching a couple. I just couldn't find this one specifically. Thank you for taking my education film needs into account

  • @BrainDeadIntellect You're welcome.

  • @AIntellectualRedneck And hopefully somebody would have taught poor Helen to use the tweezers. At least Barbara didn't win any Miss Unibrow pagents.

  • @AIntellectualRedneck Retrospective diagnosis is a mug's game. The people who made this film meant to show (exaggerated) anti-social behaviour just as Beatrix Potter meant to write about naughty animals. To say that Barbara has ADD is tantamount to saying that Squirrell Nutkin had Tourette's.

    Anyway...

Prof.Temple Grandin often says that she is glad to have grown up in the fifties because she wasn't allowed to get away with misbehaviour just because she was autistic.

  • @Smallpotato1965

a strange conundrum, that there are flaws in both the liberal and conservative views on this issue, and finding a good balance seems impossible.

  • "You couldn't help interrupting...but you added absolutely nothing to that conveation?" lol If we all went by that standard then 99.9% of the entire YouTube community that leaves pointless comments both here as well as elsewhere would have to just shut-up! lol This site is dominated by sexually confused, angry little boys, pissed-off feminists and social-justice warriors looking to call everyone an "ignorant racist" every five minutes! Modern educational system I suppose...lol

  • @MrSchultzstaffel Oh, its you again. I guess you fall into the angry little boy category and I'm the pissed-off feminist social justice warrior. Oh well, live and let live, and no hard feelings *kiss*

  • @kashmirpage Well, you do have to learn at some point in time don't you? Cheers! =D

  • @MrSchultzstaffel Whatever doc *bugs bunny kiss*

  • Helen is full of shit.

    Barbara ROCKS!

  • Barbara: Hoe Stfu Your only on this commercial because you slept with the Director

    Narrator:O.O

  • Barbara... Barbara... Barbara!

  • whose name is Barbara in here? :D

  • Yes..thats all good,.but why does Barbara live in a light house?

  • That bitch sounds like Glados!

  • I tried to find the original but couldn't. Was (original footage) really this harsh? I never heard anything so explicit, but I was a young child in the fifties & remember this kind of attitude- it was just unspoken .

This is really quite shocking, almost horrific, congratulations for bringing out and remembering this nasty subtlety of the 50's early sixties that has now been forgotten.

  • @FreePress1000 The original is called Habit Patterns and yes it is as harsh as the clipped version if not more so. The thing to remember is in the 40s and 50s a woman's only real option for a secure future was to find herself a husband. Therefore much emphasis was placed on appearance, manners and grooming. These films were made to advance that agenda. The perceived worst thing that could happen to a woman of that era would be to end up an old maid or a spinster.

  • These educational films were heavily mined by Nick At Nite in the eighties for their "How To Be Swell" satirical infomercials. The infomercials were a parody of these films themselves giving viewers advice on absurd topics like "Coping With Unwanted Relatives" and "How To Drink A Milkshake". The final scene in this film was used in a advert called "Fear Of Cheese" showing Barbara having a breakdown because she was exposed to a pound of provolone.

  • Is this meant serious or some kind of Monty Python?!?

  • @Petrhrabal Well this film has been edited but the originals were actually meant to be taken seriously believe it or not. They were marketed towards high schoolers in the forties and fifties and aimed to teach them things like safety, manners, grooming and social skills.

  • @jldraw such a struggle for engineering society in fifties :) ... Till now I thought it was only in Eastern Europe and USSR

  • All Barbara had to do was break out her stash and instantly become the life of the party!

  • Barbara is hot. She looks like she would do it.

  • I grew up with OCD and it wasn't diagnosed until I was thirty so I got punished a lot for having the 'wrong attitude'. Just allow people to be who they are and look for their potential without preconcieved judgements

  • I can't help but think that the narrator sounds like GLaDOS from "Portal."

  • Highly enlightening film. I think all young women should view this.In fact it should be shown to colored women specifically.. Michele Obama .

  • You added NOTHING to that conversation.

    NOTHING.

  • I've never been able to match the right skirt with the right sweater. Is there any hope for me?

    Sam

  • "She's able to match the right skirt with the right sweater."

Uh, wait. Being fashion challenged is considered "deviant" behaviour?

  • @ImJustHeretoLurk The idea that any of what's being shown here is "deviant" is laughable. The people labeling the girl as having ADHD and autism are still calling her a deviant, just using different words. There are many, many reasons why some people cannot make themselves fit into the prescribed mold for society. The only difference between then and now is then = shock treatment, now = medication.

  • Why does Helen look like Betty Page?

  • WOW! Seems like I am Barbara. Always goth... I am nothing my parents wanted me to become. And BTW fifties ppl you can't expect teens to be anything but emotionally messed up with deeper problems!

  • Hmmm. Seems like the average teenager to me.

  • This is before someone said

"Hey its that time of the month".

    Women, who understands them.

  • If only we could make some youtube commenters cry by telling them they added nothing to the conversation...

  • oh god. I could never live in the 50's. Good thing I was born in the 90's

  • @djazr You really think life was like this in the 50's?

  • @oldschoolgreentube Well maybe not quite as harsh but still I couldn't live all the pressures that society had in the 50's

  • I bet Helen 'bangs like a shithouse door in a gale' on the sly :)

  • That girl was just horrid!

  • Good commercial, saying it like it is and not making excuses.

  • I bet Helen's the narrator. That bitch!

  • The funny thing about PSA's is thinking "oh my god, the 50's was horrible, what a screwed up society, thank God we know better now" when in truth people from 30 or 40 years later are going to be thinking the same about our PSA's and propganda films.

  • @BrainDeadIntellect The funny thing is that, (considering the way society is obviously headed,) that you even believe that there will even BE a "30 to 40 years from now." lol

  • @BrainDeadIntellect I grew up in the 70s and loved it! They rocked!

  • @BrainDeadIntellect

    As well they should. ;-)

  • @BrainDeadIntellect Hell, some people today look back at the 80s and 90s PSAs as a reflection of a horrid society.

  • Not really seeing as how we don't have "conform or die" videos shown in schools anymore.

  • @Gmancrap How do you know we don't? Besides, just because we would give barbra ritalin now instead of bitch at her doesn't mean society is in a good place. It still has a "conform or die" mentality. Giving the different kids mental illness labels and promoting gay rights doesn't change our piss poor society. You make think it's great but I bet you'd watch our films in 40 years and notice a large change. Times evolve, but it doesn't mean it's actually better.

  • @Gmancrap Now we have ADHD! Conform or you will be forced to take drugs which will make you 'better'

  • Not really seeing as how I was medicated for the infamous ADD when I was a child and as soon as I turned 18 I stopped at my own choice.

  • @Gmancrap Well done. It is still unfortunate for those under 18 and those who do not have your understanding or fortitude of mind.

  • Right. Well, I'm sure they'll be fine.

  • Degenerate behavior ... the root of COMMUNISM ! she probably became a beatnik and then burnt her bra and became a lesbohemian ... and then MARRIED CLINTON for a 'beard' !!! LOL !!!

  • Imagine if you had a woman's voice putting you down every single time you'd do something wrong. I bet you'd cry in your bedroom too.

  • Way to stigmatize ADHD in the 1950s!

  • I don't understand. Why was she crying at the end? What happened to her, and what is it 'a little late' for?

  • Barbara is bitch!

  • Oh god, this poor girl. Shut the fuck up, terrible and insensitive narrator lady. I'll be your friend Barbara! We will be messy and late together, and we will stick gum is stupid Helen's stupid hair!

  • @taureleafsilver And I'll hand Helen the eyebrow tweezers. "Looking for your tweezers, Helen? Can't remember where you put them?"

  • The German BND is the renamed 3rd Reich GESTAPO.The BND had organized the delegate Scheuermann of our county to visit or home.To allow him to personally experience how my brother and our parents had been tortured. The BND continued to torture my brother. He was assassinated on July 11th2009.Half a year after the assassination of my brother the CDU delegate Mappus from our district town Pforzheim was made prime minister of the German land of Baden Würtemberg

The CDU is the ruling party in Germany

  • This sort of shit makes it a no brainer as to why many women my mother's age are so spacey and have no concept of self worth, self love, or compassion for themselves. They were taught they were always stupid and wrong if they didn't meet everyone's expectations all the time.

  • Wow, did people actually contemplate whether they add something to a conversation? I wish we had that particular kind of self-editing today.

  • holy crap ! i dont have a skirt or a sweater !

  • I think the narrator needs a good beatdown.

  • Rude, interrupts, always late, lazy. sounds like aspergers to me.

  • @12me91 Hum, nope...aspergers rocks for one, and two being snarky is quiet fun...

  • more like advertisement for suicide...

  • How many women from that era went on to run a corporation or for president ect ect. Propaganda shapes nations. Same thing now. The term man is made out of mud.

  • She's on the weed.. DUH

  • Did anyone ever take this kind of crap seriously? Ever?

  • no fear barbara,nothing a little electroshock can't fix

  • She just needs a good vibrator and some rechargeable "D" cells

  • @BeeRich33 No, her mother does!

  • @kashmirpage I can take care of Mother!

  • @BeeRich33 Actually, I have something for both. As long as they dress the same.

  • narrator is a cruel, evil bitch.

  • Comment removed

  • I want to be a "Barbara", too.

Times have not changed so much. What is expected from woman in 2011 ? They always tell us, how we should be and behave, and that is not, that we say: I do it MY way: Today Helen would have made some career and and looked like woman in Playboy magazines.

  • Free-spirited Barbara grew up to become a best-selling novelist whose titles included "Dog-Trot Along the Low Hedge," and "Crying Jag Accompanied by Unsympathetic Over-voice."

Obsessive-Compulsive Helen grew up to be a librarian in Cleveland.

  • I have low self esteem, I always go for girls like Barbera.

  • What happened to her at the end?

  • All this girl has to look forward to is a lifetime of eating disorders, self-cutting, and eventually dying alone with a houseful of cats.

  • Teenagers in the '50s laughed at these things as much as we do today.

  • Don't cry Barbara, you'll be popular because you look good and Helen looks like a dog in the face

  • Is it just me or does this all sound like stuff GLaDOS would say?

  • Barbara doesn't deserve to live.

  • i think i'm a barbara ;D

  • Even though it's too late for the disgusting, messy little loser, at least she has nice wallpaper.

  • Barbara is P!nk's mom.

  • Helen is going to need to be that prudish. It will help her in later years when she realizes that no guy is going to want that face. Barbara has more hope.

  • i'm a total Barbra and proud of it. i don't wanna be like all the other girls, be like "Helen." Helen's a girl who's living in a bubble and reality is going to hit her hard when she gets to the real world.

  • Dam That narrator needs counseling. What a freaking creep. The kid was having enough problems. Then that Bitch of a narrator had to rub salt into the wounds.

  • Manual "How to become white trash bitch"

  • I'd do her

  • Barbara's hot.

  • It's a little late, isn't it Barbara? None of your tears will wash away the horror of your vile, depraved, disgusting, and degenerate ways.

  • Wow - Where's the Compassion?

Who wrote that voice-over i wonder. In any case just another example of things that have barely changed, if at all really. Mercy is so highly under-rated

  • dont interrpt lezbo the amrican idustrial complex need you to bow before them

and to drink deeply of thier milky goodness

  • @jesustonight I'm afraid I can't understand a word you said

  • No wonder our world is so screwed up, just look at the people driving our lives into the future. The people of the 50's and 60's shouldn't have been allowed to have children, they were too stupid and gulible to breathe.

  • @TheMadSyrupMaker We have moved on from this though, and the new generation isn't this stupid. They are stupid in a whole new, entirely their own, way.

  • She's disorganized, sloppy, always late, frequently interrupts others, is misunderstood, can't plan ahead, and is emotional. This is a perfect description of someone with ADHD, but they didn't know what that was back then. She'll never be given the freedom to be herself and as a result, will not reach her full potential. Although we now know what it is now, people with ADHD are still misunderstood and put down. Too bad, because most of them are geniuses in disguise with innovative ideas.

  • @40AcreMule u know ive been thinking could you explain what ADHD is, cuz ater watching this add i think im kinda having it

  • @40AcreMule It also may have included traits of Asperger's as well, but the video's context is left somewhat muddled by the edits.

  • @40AcreMule - So being misunderstood and emotional are symptoms of a mental illness now? The industry will do just about anything to make ordinary life problems into a disease treatable with Medication.

  • ???????????? o.o

  • This video has disturbed me almost to the point of insanity...There. I am insane now

  • wow, a woman can MATCH HER SKIRT TO HER SWEATER...how we excel! lol. man, this is why so many women don't think THINKING is a CHOICE. NO wonder we have awesome music today that rages against this silly past! FUNNY. THANKS!

  • give Barbara a Lobotomy !!!!

  • Yes there was NO color in the 1950's no wonder thier bedrooms were lit like dungeons

  • Bring on the LSD.

  • "does she have to do this every morning barbara?" stop playing "stinkfinger" and get up.

  • barbara is right here with me guys and she,s really upset.she,s saying, she,s sayin,she,s.....

  • barbara may be organized, but her bangs are hideous.

  • @dtorfleming lmao I thought the same thing

  • barbara is responsible for the worlds ills.kill barbara.

  • marry your cousin to be king or president barbara jeeeeez

  • moral of the story: brush your hair and you will be the president

  • Am I boverred ?!
