I don't see anything wrong with the theme. You're not going to have trade routes when you have machines I think. The only thing i see wrong with the board is that one player has to play upside down. Are there are a million board games with this theme and are you fed up with it?
I don't play any board games, but I like seeing all these different game ideas. I could see myself play this game and enjoy it and not be bothered with the theme or the look of the board.
What if trading theme fits this mechanics best? Well, at least if you have cities and routes. I don't think trading in space would change it a lot. But those technology mechanics truly can be used with any theme. Factory theme? Well, power grid and factory manager somehow look boring to me :) Maybe because i havent played any trading theme game yet :))
Building a factory is definitely less entertaining than building trade routes imho). But yeah, that game does LOOK dull.

Beautiful map and very nice & useful boards! :o)
But the city of "Goettingen" is toooo important in game play! :o(
Therefor "Vasco da Gama" is the far better game! ;o)
