2) Tibet was not close to being sovereign nation until the British Empire tried to annex western China. They gave powers to a reactionary monastic order and stirred up nationalist attitudes in order to divide and rule. The monasteries supported (or at the very least failed to eliminate) the feudal land system and the bondage of the tibetan people. China made the right decision. In short: I don't give nations more rights than the people who suffer them.

I was there 2005 and the roads were being built mostly by tibetan women carrying boulders by hand... painstakingly slow and very labourous. I'm glad that more people will be able to visit this beautiful location but I'm also torn about the amount of tourism and western influence in this remote and pristine area.
