Thanks for posting the best example of British blue eyed soul I know of. Ridley and Marriot are awesome on this one, add the backup girls and I get the goosebumps every time.....
I saw them around 1973 ?. Opening act was The Eagles. It was a no seating concert, and I was in front of the stage..leaning on it ...about 4 inches from Glenn Frey's boot. Then Humble Pie came on and I was blown away. The Blackberries sang backup vocal. Steve was a powder keg in a small frame. Search Venetta Fields on Wikipedia to understand how the Blackberries were a treat in themselves. Then add Humble Pie.
@JustAintthatWay You may see my posting on this song. To me whenever I feel down I listen to this song and it pumps me right back up. Maybe the alltime spirit lifter ever. If you like this song check out my channel. Lots of good old music there to enjoy.
Man, this is beautiful, Greg Ridley and Steve Marriott sound sooo good together. Man this makes me miss the days when rock and roll was still around, REAL rock, with feel. Humble Pie; Forever!!
I think that's a definite yes. Very observant. I would venture that his brother Chris listened very carefully to Stevie's voice as well. This is why I was drawn to the Black Crowes and their music. It wasn't a conscious thing it was more of an instinctual and spiritual thing that magnetically drew me to their music. Almost as if my soul was saying this is familiar and comforting. I would also venture that both brothers would give credit to this great band.
Definately i have read interviews with both Chris and Rich where they are giving credit to humble pie as one of there influences. Actually if i remember correctly chris say's something like " everybody compares us to the faces and the stones but i think of myself as more of a Steve Marriott rip off" something to that effect. BTW it won't let me post the link here but on the humble pie/steve marriott memorial website there is a petition trying to get Steve inducted into the hall of fame.
The Steve Marriott ripoff quote is accurate and thank you for the memorial website. I will visit and sign because I too grew up with The Small Faces and Humble Pie as major musical influences. My own voice sounds a little more like Paul Rodgers than Marriott's . I as a musician was always green with envy at what Stevie could do with that marvelous voice of his. Rock on brother.
Well if you have a voice that compares with Rodgers Thats nothing to be ashamed of.... He can wail with the best of them and he seems to get better with age. I saw him a few years ago he's like 56 or 57 and still belting em out.... Stevie and Paul thats the cake for me.. I wish they had worked together it would be intersting to see how they sounded together.
With Rodgers rich baritone and Stevie's soaring tenor that would of been an awesome pairing indeed. I sang with hair bands in LA during the 80's but never made it to the big time. But the soundman for Def Leppard, his name Donny Hambrick and the guitar player for France, his name Sammy Karini both compared my voice to Paul Rodgers. Needless to say I was quite flattered.
Ya thats quite the compliment indeed, The music business is a tough one to crack...i have some friends and family in the detroit area who have been at it for years all the talent in the world just cant get that break.. One of them even had the good fortune of opening for rodgers here in 2005..it's tough Keep Rocken!!!!
With each great one that passes I have learned to just treasure every opportunity to play and screw the business side of it. You can't take money with you but the joy of performing will stay with your soul and those that saw you long after you are gone. Steve "The Great" Marriott being a perfect example. Keep Rocking indeed my friend.
Tune to Vestapol (DADF#AD), clamp your capo @ 2nd fret, hit some harmonics at 12th fret (14th fret, actual) and do a Keef Richards chord thing at 5th fret (7th fret, actual) and you'll be off to the races.
Most of "Smokin'" is pretty hard rockin' stuff, but this tune was a nice diversion from the heavy stuff. They really did do a great job on the vocals.
That they do. The whole baritone tenor combo has worked in many bands. Supertramp and Journey come immediately to mind. The Beatles of course used many voices to achieve this. Also the Eagles come to mind. Canned Heat and Chicago. well you get the picture.
IMO Greg Ridley was a super under rated singer. Marriot was great and everything but I liked Greg's vocals better. Too bad he was overshadowed by Steve because I would have loved to hear more of his vocal work!
Sad both voices have been silenced. RIP Steve and Greg:-(

Remember the days when the songs had a melody, musicians played instruments and gave a shit about their art? Nice.

something this good was ever caught on recording tape and is available
it is w/o a doubt my favorite song ever (even tho sometimes i'd forget
to say so if i ever got asked the question once i'd remember i'd know it again)
i hear this song numerous times each year even tho ive never heard it on radio
it plays itself inside my head and i sing along
