i thought she was really old when she died. she may have lived hard, but she lived. and what a mark she left, that even people in their 20s like me still give her praise.
Always loved Judy and always will! I was born 5 days prior to her death and wish that I could have seen her perform live. But, thanx to the Internet, I've seen more Judy than ever before. Her raw talent will live longer than all of us who watch this video. Unfortunately, addiction claimed her too soon. I've had my own issues with alcoholism, so I can relate. I cannot imagine the difficulty of conquering addiction in the public eye. That would be horrible.
Judy Garland would surely laugh at the silly argument about the exact length of her career. She did entertain us all whether it was 45 years or five decades.
just one thing, if she died at 47, how could she have entertained her fans for 5 decades when she died? NOW she has done so for 5 decades, but not when she died..
@catgroucho She started in the 1920's at 2 1/2 years old singing and dancing in front of audiences in the theater. She died in 1969. That's 5 decades of performing for audiences.
@BHW722 no, if she died at 47, she could never have performed for 5 decades. within 5 decades, yes. if for arguments sake say she started performing in 1920 and died in 1969. thats 49 years. NOT five decades. 5 decades is ALWAYS in between 50 and 59 years. and according to you she started in 1924, that is only 45 years
@catgroucho She worked 45 of her 47 years during the 20's, 30's, 40's, 50's and 60's. People who were alive in the 20's across 5 decades into the 60's enjoyed the greatest entertainer in history. Stop splitting hairs!
When I saw the coffin with beautiful flowers, my tears stared to come out of my eyes. The event must have been really shocking to anyone who loved Judy. I am now 36 and sadly she had been dead when I was born in 1975. Since I first saw "The Wizard of Oz", however, I have been a huge fan of the great actress/singer. And it is really heart-wrenching to hear the comments on her in this clip. If only she had not been addicted to horrible drugs, her career would have expanded longer. How sad!
Thankyou so much for posting this. What a sweetie pie she was and actually still is. As long as there is video, we still have her. One of the only performers that makes me stand up and sing, or clap or cry or all 3. What an unbelievable talent. Who is like her today? No one.
Her death, as the coroner said, was purely accidental--she just forgot how many pills she had taken--the same thing happened to Marilyn. All you have to be is somewhat tired and an addictive personality. Miss her.
the only 'good' thing about Judy's death is that it caused the Stonewall gay bar riot--and became the dawn of Gay Pride. She is, in effect, the 'patron saint' to millions of liberated gays/lesbian/trangenders. God Bless you Judy.
I sat down with my Mum today and we watched the Wizard of Oz and Return to Oz. Both films are such fun to watch and we had a great time. My mum was telling me [after] about Judy. Shame she never got to see Return to Oz. I bet she would have loved it, I know we did

@iBenjafied Yes,many people tried to help.BUT..they wisely got to a point to where they were sinking with her,and then, you have to detach. That's what co-dependency is all about. They couldn't cure her,she was beyond help. You have to let go, because you can't control it.
@TheDorr71 like when Sid moved Lorna and Joey away from her because the drugs were making Judy a danger to her children, Sid had to take them for theirs and Judy's good, i mean, if Judy had gone crazy owing to drugs and injured one of them, how would she have felt when she realized what she did? She was an amazing lady, but she was addicted and that can drag down even the strongest person.
@rileyrossi She was EXTREMELY talented, but near the end,the children chose Sid over Judy to live with.I seriously doubt she was happy with Mickey Deans.Once again,it was the ILLUSION of being happy. Hardly anyone attended her last wedding, because they looked at it as another tragedy. She was 47,looked much older, and those beautiful eyes looked sad.
@TheDorr71 I know. Everyone looks at her as a tragedy, i do quite a bit, but then I watch videos of her concerts and her movies and I think, wow, that was one amazing lady, she wasn't a tragedy at all. She was brilliant!
@rileyrossi Just saw "I Could Go On Singing" today. That was 1963, and it's tragic that she literally aged twenty years in six.I realize make-up helps, but look at her difference in just a few years-unbelievable. Between her marriages to Herron and Deans, she doesn't even look like the same person. It took it's toll..
@TheDorr71 yes, it definately took its toll in a short space of time. If you listen to one of her final performances though, she was still there, hidden, but still there. you could hear that amzing strength that stayed in her voice through her whole life, that strength that makes us listen to her songs and interviews and watch her movies over and over again because people just dont have that strength now
@rileyrossi There definately were "flickers" of her voice now and then, but her voice broke many times. Her associate said she even asked him to remind her to breathe, because there were times she couldn't catch her breath. She took huge gulps at a time.Actress June Allison said,"She had the worse taste in deciding husbands.." Honestly though,I don't think anyone could've lived with that life she led.No doubt about it, she gave herself to her audience.Unfortunately, no one could do satisfy her.
@TheDorr71 no, no one could have lived with that life for long. It would have been exhausting trying to love someone who needs so much, more than anyone except for her audience could give, but they gave almost every time she asked them to. Judy just had an insatiable appetite for love which is why she got so depressed because the amount of love she needed could not be given 24/7
judy died the year i was born. i've always had a fondness for her because of her sweet yet spunky performance as dorothy in woz. in it, dorothy always stood up for anything that was being picked on by something more powerful. judy always seemed like a very fragile person, physically and mentally. i always want to wrap my arms around her and give her a big hug and tell her that *I* care about her. maybe not many other people do, but I do. her death at 47 still saddens me to this day.
is there any footage of her singing am I blue the whole song live? Mickey Deans is not the healthiest looking here either. It breaks my heart to think no one wanted to try and save her. Not her daughters not her friends and no man cold love her enough to make her feel the way she needed. I don't want to hear how difficult she was.Because they all were.Liz was a queen at it.But to let her go through with shock therapy.I think Sid Luft was her husband when that happened. She was never the same.
Also, undeuxtroisquatreish, Don't send me anymore personal E-MAILS. I don't want to talk to you personally. Just go suck a dick, or look at some Mans hairy Ass. I'm sorry you are so lonely, and miserable, But it's not my fault. Just stay behind that keyboard, and keep popping those keys. And while you're at it, take another one up your keister.
@Ma007rk - Why don't you think about how this all started. Your claim about Garland's accidental O.D., and I paraphrase was...THIS WAS NOT AN ACCIDENT. You opened your stupid self for ridicule for such an ignorant statement. I merely followed through and now I'm a victim of your vitriol and bias because I'm a gay man. This speaks very highly of you and your upbringing doesn't it, numb nuts. Check your spelling on 'keister.' Oh, I'm not lonely and/or miserable like you. Impossible.
The best you can do is to talk about my grammar? Do you want me to "open up" on your beloved Judy Garland? I can do that if you would like. I really have no desire to. Go back and read what was said, and try and stay with the facts there Internet Rambo. You really are a tough one behind your keyboard, aren't you?
Our God is marching on!!! I pray that you have seen him because if anyone deserves to you do!!! Just these few songs in this clip makes my hair stand up and I thank you for all the wonderful performances and songs you left people that love you.I am one. Rest in Peace Judy! Still Loving you Barb...
@anthony567ful OMG seriously that's what I just said to my mom, I had never seen anyone compare those two amazing women to eachother thus far. Thanks for confirming my thoughts. <3
Who is the guy that's crying talking about when he heard her sing? OMG Judy... I so so SO feel for her though I'm only 21...think of her frequently and wish I'd lived back then. xoxo
I remember so well hearing about her death on the Sunday evening news. I went out to my treehouse and cried. At the time I didn't know why she meant so much to me, I just remember feeling like I lost someone who was very close to me. I still get inspiration from her now whenever I feel I'm facing adversity. <3
I love Judy Garland till this day there is no one that can sing and perform like her... She was beyond amazing... This video made me cry but all I can say is that she is a beautiful angel in heaven!!!
Judy was called an "old bag" and "worn out" by Sharon Filiberti, the wife of Sid Luft's business partner in Group V, which arranged and backed Judy's career in '67 & '68, and she was one of the few people who ever stood up to Judy. This was on a 1968 flight during which the two women drank, then wound up hurling insults and drinks at each other. Filiberti was particularly annoyed that Judy told the pilot to "shut his flapping yap." Judy took the next flight back to NY.
@Ma007rk You have to remember that Judy had been on drugs for over forty years by the time she died. It probably took ten pills to get her to sleep because of the tolerance her poor little body had built up by then. She didn't intend to kill herself, she was just trying to get back to sleep. It was clearly an accident because her body wore out and it couldn't survive the dosage.
@Ma007rk - What makes you the expert? Dime store doctors like you need to have cotton shoved up your bum, in your mouth and between your fingers so the rest of us aren't forced to listen to your insanity. My father was a psychiatrist and would mention cases like this at home WITH NO NAMES INVOLVED. You're totally in la la land. Yes, she could have taken 10 seconal/pheno... without the realization - "hey, I just took 7 two hours ago." Do your homework idiot.
Your not much of a reader, are you? why don't you read the rest of what I wrote before you hurl insults and try to be an internet Rambo. I have every right to an opinion just like you do. People like you come a dime a dozen out here. I never said I was an expert. That's like me saying that every Judy Garland fan is as queer as a 3 dollar bill. You really should "look" before you "leap" because still waters run deep. Go play Rambo somewhere else child.
@Ma007rk - Oh, you wrote something else I should be aware of? Sorry I missed it. I'm betting prosaic would be the best word to describe it. Ergo my over-looking it. For sh*ts and giggles, I AM a Judy Garland fan and gay on top of that. Oh, God, may a pox be upon me. I'm "queer" AND I've pissed you off. What am I to do? I'll start by laughing my bum off for getting under your skin. Oh, and by the way, when you say "your not much....," it's actually "YOU'RE," Einstein. Work on your grammar.
" it's actually "YOU'RE," Einstein. Work on your grammar." I'll work on my Grammar if you will work on getting straight. Is my Grammar the worst you can say there, Rambo?
Judy Garland's death @ the young age of 47, along with her astounding body of work have kept the Garland Legend alive. When she died she was still young& had a larger than life persona. Judy Garland still has a tremendous impact on Show Business & will continue to do so because Today the world lacks such a great singers like Judy, who can sing so powerful & stir up such emotion & keep our attention for 2 hrs they way she could. Even when she wasnt in great voice, she had that magic that wowed us
So awful that the greatest talent of the twentieth century ended up with all those parasites (Vincent Minnelli of course excepted) ... Deans, Heron ... Luft! ... as well as all the others. John Caryle, interviewed on this clip, comes across as a similarly self-serving nitwit. My own mother wouldn't let me go up the block from 77 Street to the funeral home! (I WAS only 9 or 10, I suppose ... she had just cause for concern, I admit!). Saved the papers, though; Judy and Apollo 11! Some summer!
Marcella Rabwin has a compulsive desire to eggagerate every time she wheels herself out to talk about how much Judy loved her - I dont believe a word the woman says
She says on here they carried the coffin above their heads - followed by footage of the coffin carried on their shoulders Why lie?
is it just my impression or does mickey deans appear very cold and not sentimental in this interview? i mean judy's friends have to weep and he's just sitting there, smoking and telling his story... weird...
@39Wizard Well it is several years after the event. If you watch an interview of the death at an earlier date he's quite emotional. Obviously devastated.
@39Wizard Deans was not a barrel of laughs, and nearly all photos and footage of him show him smoking. His hiding his mouth behind his hand and smoke is telling; it shows secrecy, perhaps shame, as if suppressing himself before he reveals something. Marcella Rabwin's story of pallbearers lifting the coffin over their heads is silly. We see them in the clip using their shoulders, as pallbearers do by definition. 7:20 Freddie Fields says Judy was "tawchid." He & his partner ripper her off.
Gerald Clarke's "Get Happy" is a waste of time & money. The Title & contents of the book are totally mismatched .His book reads like an aweful tabloid magazine. I'm sure Judy's grand kids wouldn't want to read this trash. Clarke claims to have found all this new info in some college Library & comparing it to "finding King Tut's tomb" but Clarke used without permission info from Dottie Ponedel's unpublished Memoirs & Author Gerald Frank's "judy" to fill his pages when he needed real facts.
It was the wife not daughter of Judy's Manager, Ray Filiberti who called Judy an "Old bag" on a plane to london both women were drinking. The woman was mad because Judy was taking up all Her managers time It got so bad that Judy took the next plane back to the states. "Group V" the managing company had a real clause in her contract that states that Judy had to give them 24 hrs notice in the event of her death because they would have to cancel the shows. It's in Gerald Frank's 1975 Book "Judy".
@NFitalianGuy all the documentaries are full of the creepiest people being interviewed all claiming to be there when Judy died and lying through their teeth or at best taking the slight aquaintence with Judy and making out it was a massively close friendship - Judy died alone - where WERE all these friends she was so close to??
I think one of Garland's self-destructive tendencies (and she had many) was to surround herself with awful people
@grai When I see her funeral & interview that young Indian girl, she looked stoned out of her mind. She said "she wanted to be near Judy". I also seen the flat in London where judy died. In 2001, it was eerie because even 32 yrs later I felt Judy's energy. She died alone in the bathroom where she could have her privacy. Judy knew she was a legend & great singer. Since childhood she needed to be reassured & it became a type of audio drug she needed it to live those awful ppl used her.
@grai I think the sleaziest people who were with Judy in the end was singer Johnnie Ray. I've read a few stories that Mickey Deans & Johnnie Ray played around while Mikey & Judy were married. I think only true Judy's fans are the pplwho dont see her as the tragic figure so many ppl today seemed to see her as. When these ppl watch her perform they always think she is on "something" or drunk when that was hardly the case especially If she was & on TV. If she was in bad shape Judy wouldnt go on air
i thought she was really old when she died. she may have lived hard, but she lived. and what a mark she left, that even people in their 20s like me still give her praise.

TheDorr71 9 months ago
@TheDorr71 I know. Everyone looks at her as a tragedy, i do quite a bit, but then I watch videos of her concerts and her movies and I think, wow, that was one amazing lady, she wasn't a tragedy at all. She was brilliant!
rileyrossi 9 months ago
@rileyrossi Just saw "I Could Go On Singing" today. That was 1963, and it's tragic that she literally aged twenty years in six.I realize make-up helps, but look at her difference in just a few years-unbelievable. Between her marriages to Herron and Deans, she doesn't even look like the same person. It took it's toll..
TheDorr71 9 months ago
@TheDorr71 yes, it definately took its toll in a short space of time. If you listen to one of her final performances though, she was still there, hidden, but still there. you could hear that amzing strength that stayed in her voice through her whole life, that strength that makes us listen to her songs and interviews and watch her movies over and over again because people just dont have that strength now
rileyrossi 9 months ago
@rileyrossi There definately were "flickers" of her voice now and then, but her voice broke many times. Her associate said she even asked him to remind her to breathe, because there were times she couldn't catch her breath. She took huge gulps at a time.Actress June Allison said,"She had the worse taste in deciding husbands.." Honestly though,I don't think anyone could've lived with that life she led.No doubt about it, she gave herself to her audience.Unfortunately, no one could do satisfy her.
TheDorr71 9 months ago

No1KCfan6 10 months ago
is there any footage of her singing am I blue the whole song live?

Ma007rk 11 months ago
@Ma007rk - Why don't you think about how this all started. Your claim about Garland's accidental O.D., and I paraphrase was...THIS WAS NOT AN ACCIDENT. You opened your stupid self for ridicule for such an ignorant statement. I merely followed through and now I'm a victim of your vitriol and bias because I'm a gay man. This speaks very highly of you and your upbringing doesn't it, numb nuts. Check your spelling on 'keister.' Oh, I'm not lonely and/or miserable like you. Impossible.
undeuxtroisquatreish 11 months ago
@undeuxtroisquatreish

I remember so well hearing about her death on the Sunday evening news. I went out to my treehouse and cried. At the time I didn't know why she meant so much to me, I just remember feeling like I lost someone who was very close to me. I still get inspiration from her now whenever I feel I'm facing adversity. <3

10 sleeping pills?! That was NO ACCIDENT!!!
Ma007rk 1 year ago

Yes, she could have taken 10 seconal/pheno... without the realization - "hey, I just took 7 two hours ago." Do your homework idiot.
undeuxtroisquatreish 11 months ago
@undeuxtroisquatreish
Ma007rk 11 months ago
@Ma007rk - Oh, you wrote something else I should be aware of? Sorry I missed it. I'm betting prosaic would be the best word to describe it. Ergo my over-looking it. For sh*ts and giggles, I AM a Judy Garland fan and gay on top of that. Oh, God, may a pox be upon me. I'm "queer" AND I've pissed you off. What am I to do? I'll start by laughing my bum off for getting under your skin. Oh, and by the way, when you say "your not much....," it's actually "YOU'RE," Einstein. Work on your grammar.

She says on here they carried the coffin above their heads - followed by footage of the coffin carried on their shoulders Why lie?
grai 1 year ago
is it just my impression or does mickey deans appear very cold and not sentimental in this interview? i mean judy's friends have to weep and he's just sitting there, smoking and telling his story... weird...
39Wizard 1 year ago
@39Wizard Well it is several years after the event. If you watch an interview of the death at an earlier date he's quite emotional. Obviously devastated.
periperigord 1 year ago

NFitalianGuy 1 year ago
@NFitalianGuy all the documentaries are full of the creepiest people being interviewed all claiming to be there when Judy died and lying through their teeth or at best taking the slight aquaintence with Judy and making out it was a massively close friendship - Judy died alone - where WERE all these friends she was so close to??
I think one of Garland's self-destructive tendencies (and she had many) was to surround herself with awful people
grai 1 year ago
@grai When I see her funeral & interview that young Indian girl, she looked stoned out of her mind. She said "she wanted to be near Judy". I also seen the flat in London where judy died. In 2001, it was eerie because even 32 yrs later I felt Judy's energy. She died alone in the bathroom where she could have her privacy. Judy knew she was a legend & great singer. Since childhood she needed to be reassured & it became a type of audio drug she needed it to live those awful ppl used her.
NFitalianGuy 1 year ago
@grai I think the sleaziest people who were with Judy in the end was singer Johnnie Ray. I've read a few stories that Mickey Deans & Johnnie Ray played around while Mikey & Judy were married. I think only true Judy's fans are the pplwho dont see her as the tragic figure so many ppl today seemed to see her as. When these ppl watch her perform they always think she is on "something" or drunk when that was hardly the case especially If she was & on TV. If she was in bad shape Judy wouldnt go on air
