The 1% pay 39% of all the taxes and they are not for the most part billionairs - to be in the top 1% you need earn only $314K for a couple. that is doing well, but it is not millionaire flying on private jets type of money. they are small business owners.
I have an idea - how about the 47% that pay ZERO in federal taxes - pay something. I think something more than zero is fair when so many are paying so much more.

They are receiving far more in benefits than they pay in - they are paying zero net federal taxes. That 47% should be paying their fair share - again a fact that you can not dispute!

@MrJohngalt2011 The basic structure of the income tax simply exempts subsistence levels of income from tax. let me put this in simple terms.; poor people are exempt from paying federal income tax. not because they are greedy or selfish, its because they dont have it. the rich have it but so long as they have simpletons like you making their case for them why should they have to pay anything?
If that is your position then those that contribute nothing or pay less than the top tax rate that the rich pay should not run around and scream for the rich should "pay their fair share". When everyone pays something, then we can talk... till then no new taxes (ever)

Well let's look at that - it displaced thousands of homes, decimated the environment around it, cost more than 5 times the projected cost and has destroyed town in between the high speed rail stops. I would take a look at a recent article in the Economist about three months back that destroys the concept of high speed rail aiding local economies.
