I modified a show car to have an electric solenoid (GM hood release) open the door by remote. It worked great. And to answer the biggest question... My battery died a few times and the doors wouldn't open. So, I created a manual hood latch to hook jumper cables up to the car. As soon as the cables were in place, the doors would open easily. Even if I could get in... my battery was dead. So, I wasn't going anywhere. I like this idea. But, on a Mercury?!?! Hahaha.

Looks like a solution looking for a problem. We already have sliding car doors (on minivans etc) that give you the same benefit of not needing a lot of clearance in tight spaces... without as much complexity.
