@ murdoch... I too saw this many years ago in a history of animation course. It has since been in the back of my mind as one of the most interesting and beautiful animations I have ever seen. Its completely mesmerizing and wonderful and works so well on so many levels. I love it.
I saw this movie in the theater when it was released in 1977. I did not think much of the film in comparison to Fantasia, but the Bolero segment was the most intriguing. Still, the idea is a bit vague. It is clearly derivative of the Rite of Spring segment in Fantasia, but it is split between being a parody of it and a commentary on humanity and as a result does neither well.
Wow! I've been trying to find out about this video for years. Thank you for posting. I also saw it many years ago on TV and have never forgotten it, but had no idea of its source. I'm off to see if it is available on DVD...
@LidiLady Yes, the whole animated segments were supposedly created by a captive animator, the slave of a brutal director who wanted to make an animated film that was supposedly totally different from "Fantasia". Also included were a vicious and sadistic conductor, dotty old ladies forming the orchestra and a cleaning woman who became the adoring animator's "leading lady".
@QueenBoadicea yes exactly, also reminded me of something Fellini could have made. Odd, yet funny and entertaining. And the animations at times very sad. Especially in a childs eye ;)

@trinitybluesman or not so fast, which makes sense, since its a musical movie and in music allegro means fast
but i think what the director was getting at was (based on the film) slow down.
man destroys nature in this part of the film, another is the snake from adam and eve eats the apple and expierences many bad things

Seems like a good parody of the Rite of Spring segment in fantasia. :)

After watching this, I actually feel bad that I'm not Italian, but it does make me proud of the little Italian heritage that I do have.

I remember seeing this a long long time ago but wasn't there a funny orchestra in between the pieces? in black and white.

I remember this from the early HBO days when they used to run independent films (as an intermission) in between major film showings.
