What he meant was he felt guilty for making it possible for anyone to make a nuclear bomb. If he had never hypothesized that E=MC^2, then neither America nor Germany would have discovered nuclear fission.
Correct me if I'm wrong, I've not really been paying attention, but think that's more what Einstein was sorry about than writing the letter.
I think Einstein should have felt guilty !! because the bomb was thrown anyway no matter who did that ... and it caused a lot of damage ... how ever Einstein stays the great mind that who discovered E=MC2
in this video, it explains as a neutron is shot at the nucleus of an unstable atom, the atom splits creating energy according to E=mc^2, but where is the missing mass that was converted into energy??
@holymasteric If you mean "what form does the released energy take?" I.E. Mass converted to Energy in the form of heat... I don't know but I think the energy is given off in the form of heat which causes rapid expansion sending more neutrons flying to do the same... Wouldn't mind someone saying more on that :P
@holymasteric If you were to add up the mass of all the protons and neutrons in the nucleus, you would find that you'll have a sum that is greater than the actual mass of the nucleus. For example, say we have 2protons and 2neutrons in a nucleus. Each having a mass unit of 1 (to make things simple). 2+1 = 3, and 3 would be the expected mass. However, empirical data would show that the actual mass of that nucleus is 2.9.
The mass that's missing is used to hold the nucleus together (remember m=E).
I don't care how many "thumbs down" I get. I am glad that the USA got the bomb before the Nazis...
Einstein should have never felt guilty for writing "The Letter". How would he have felt if he had watched the Germans produce a nuclear weapon and he had done nothing?
exactky.....and if the germans got teh bomb 1st. ....they wouldntve takin control of da world (especially with how hitler was).
Furthermore, can u imagien how da world would be now, if HITLER assumed full control like that?!?!..OMG!!!!........2 of the MANY outcomes of that would be 1: Hitler would have ended up killin all races, leavin only germans left. 2- becuz of his evil and seflfish/ness....and Stupidity, the whole ENTIRE HUMAN RACE..probly would NOT exist right now. And thats real
the nazis where not juts germans , i was a coallition between a couple of countries...the fascist were also in spain and italy for example..he didnta wanted to kill al races...he justa wanted them to stay where they come from...stupid...really stupid....and the bomb was taken by other bunch of racists , facist and crazy power nation..united states...no country should have bombs..no one.
I think he would have felt just as bad if that bomb hit USA rather than Japan. He would value all life equally and not want any bomb, regardless of the nationality.
@infoherper I like it how the USA brings the world into the modern era by attracting all of the greatest minds of the world with our "freedom" and we are hated for it. You see dumb americans on the tv and you assume we are all the same. We have a lot of problems but we have done a lot for the advancement of the human race. You hate our way of life but look at your country chances are its starting to look more and more like ours.
@randy95023 Einstein wrote the letter to prevent the Nazis from winning the war. For that purpose only. Nazi Germany was defeated and had surrendered before building there bomb and before the USA completed theirs. It was at this point that Leo Szilard and Einstein felt compelled that there was no more nuclear threat and there was no longer any need for a bomb. Einstein regretted writing the letter, because the same exact thing he was trying to prevent Germany from doing, the USA went and did.
Yeah, that was scary when the person at (3:50)said if he could think of it, so could his german collegues. I would have hated to be that guy to know the answer to a deadly weapon that 500 of his enemies, the scientists working for Hitler, are all trying to find out simeltaneously.

@holymasteric so when you split the nucleus, that energy is released

@dsac6007 I'm American too btw. Name one recent great scientific breakthrough the US has had in the past 50 years. Go ahead.

Leó Szilárd was Jewish. No wonder the Germans were jealous. Europe must bow to this race instead of persecuting them. The Jew rule!
