@sweetknives, you said that the 285 would be great for backpacking. Incorrect. I own the 285 and when I had mine shipped, it was dull. No big deal since it was shipped. Damn thing doesn't hold an edge. I wouldn't dare bring this out in the middle of nowhere. The 285 is best used for light usage and must be resharpened every week to hold a good edge even when it isn't put through the whole nine yards. If you're out in the middle of nowhere, you should spring for a higher quality knife.
@BleachEvangel I never said that this would be the best knife for backpacking but it would work if thats all you had. If you want a great knife for backpacking I would recommend a Spyderco Endura ZDP-189 or a Benchmade 940. I also really like the Alaskan Guide Buck 110 from Cabelas. You know what other knife I love is the Swiss Army Hunter Lockback knife, the larger sized one. Thats a great knife too. Good luck!
@vantriloHD I would recommend a Buck 110 for cutting rope on a ship as that knife is just a little more money but much more durable, it would have to be carried in a sheath on your belt though. Also, if you are cutting a lot of rope you will have to learn how to sharpen it correctly.
@sweetknives Thanks for the quick response. Im going to look at that on the internet. I looked as well to the Bear Grylls Folding Sheath Knife. Thats looking good as wel
these things hold their own in my opinion...i've had mine for 3 years, use if for everything from opening letters to yard work to carpentry...still has a solid lock up and always easy to sharpen. DEFINITELY worth the $17 i paid for it if you ask me
Can't be beat for the price. The blade is nice and hefty and will surely do anything i ask of it. The plastic handle seems cheap, but i find it rather sturdy for it's weight. on my knife scale (1 being a dull and rusty S&W and 10 being a razor sharp Gerber Trident, i'd say this knife is a solid 5, possibly 6.
@PlasmaNugget Gerber's "mystery steel" is your go-to "razor sharp" blade? Dang, i always thought their steel sucked. I must have been missing out on a lot. . .totally agree with you on the S&W tho. lol
@TedOfNod I did say a Gerber Trident, Ya know, the $200 dollar American made knife masterpeice. I generally hate gerbers, there's only a few that i actually like from them. The trident and the LMF are 2 of my favorites.
The large/med handles can be compressed slightly by squeezing. Slight blade play up/down. Be careful wiggling to check on side to side: there is only plastic holding the blade. I visually checked 10+ knives in bubble packs. Only ONE had a reasonably centered blade!?!
On the up side, they are the perfect EDC (med) and self defense (lg) knives. Comfortable grip. Big blade (lg). The Bantam will last if not abused. It is a MUCH higher quality knife than your typical flea market knife.
The plastic makes it feel like junk, the blade it self feels nice, it is a junky feeling knife, with a ceramic handle it coulda been way better, it's kinda sad really!!
I had been a fan of the Buck Bantam Nano; hard to sharpen, but cheap to replace when I abuse the blade. But I just noticed that now the lockback is starting to fail on my current one! That's after about 6 months of pretty light use. Now I will find out what Buck's customer service is like...
that title bro. thats super long. lol. not bad knives. i wish i had more sporting goods stores in my area for those sales in the store. thats where you can get a good deal on good knives. sometimes the hardware stores have sales on kershaws. good to see a vid from you.
for a couple of extra dollars, I think the vantage is more knife for the money...but 19$!?!...this package sells at 40$ at my canadiantire store...damn!
Hey have you seen the new Vantage ''Force Pro'' coming out soon? knifecenter as them on pre-order. It is labeled as an tactical/survival knife this time around with an ''over sized liner''...perhaps like that of the CSAR-T folder?
It's good It would be nice if it was more balanced I can't remember how much I bought mine for.

Buck Knives are very nice. I have two of them, but not sure of the model numbers. I believe I got both of them at Scheels.
