Usain has indeed left it way too late to consider the long jump. He should have been jumping regularly as a teenager.. For all his speed, I don't think he has enough natural suppleness to genuinely threaten the long jump record or take any major titles..
@DBRMatrix Usain Bolt is just so fast though..I think it is apparent that he is also extremely athletic and I think that athleticism combined with speed is most of what you need to compete at an elite level. Sure there are those who work hard and there are those again with elite athleticism and have a good work ethic...but don't you agree that LeBron James could play NBA basketball at an average level without hard work?
Usain Bolt may well have been born with the potential to be a world-record breaking long-jumper. But one has to remember that he is now 25 years of age ...... and therefore he has left it a bit late to take up a new athleticsevent from scratch, as it were. If a young athlete has aspirations to equal (or exceed) Michael Powell world record of 8.95 metres, he would be well advised to begin training seriously for the event WAY before reaching 20 years of age - let alone 25 !
@MrJustNeca ? that doesnt make much sense. It's acknowledged that a good jumper won't be running to their fullest for long jump. But Usain Bolt could easily lower that pace to match, Mike Powell's, while exerting more energy than MP could on the actual jump. So I don't see why it isn't possible.
MrJustNeca, I am also an athletics trainer and a college professor, in the athletics department, so I also know a few things...
So, in order to correct you, human beings (not only men, women as well) can´t jump far if they run at their maximum speed, but do jump the farthest if they run at optimal speed, which is as fast as possible without jeopardizing the takeoff.
@MrJustNeca Following my comment to @bredon2343, all that Bolt as to do is lower his maximum speed to the point that he can enable himself the adequate takeoff angle (implying adequate training).
Roughly, I'd say that he would need to run at around 7/10 or maybe 8/10 of his maximum speed to be able to output the correct angle for takeoff, and this is MUCH FASTER then MP did when he jumped 8.95m, just 5cm shy of 9m, so, if Bolt wants it, it's his!
@shadow1985ism As a matter of fact, Michael Powell wasn't capable of jumping anywhere near 7 metres when he was 12 years of age (in 1976). He was a late developer, physically and athletically. It is very unlikely that he was capable of jumping 20 feet (6.10 metres) in the summer of '76.
There are surely very few, if any, athletes who have achieved a distance of 7 metres in the long jump at twelve years of age. (I believe that the British record - for A THIRTEEN-YEAR-OLD - is something
@shadow1985ism [Continuing on from my previous 'post' about the long jump]: in the region of 6.50 metres.
Also, it is worth mentioning that kids who excel at long jumping at the age of 12 or 13, USUALLY (but not always) fail to become world-class performers in adult life. The same is true of kids who are capable of running incredibly fast times (in the 100m and 200m sprint events) at 12 or 13 years of age.
hes still jumping 6.70? holly shit. but to join this convo, i have a meet today so i'll see what i jump, but i haven't been measured since gr.6 (11 years old/late b day) when i jumped 4.65
@ThomasRiekki wouldn't be at all surprised. He jumped 8.95m, absolutely phenomenal, and althought that was 19 years ago, he'll still have all those super fast-twitch muscle fibres, and he's still fairly slim.
@whitedragon3 he can jump over 8 without training, if he hits the board, his speed will carry him. the training and hard work and technique is a difference in centimeters, the most important part is speed, bolt has that
Ppl are on bolts jock so hard...damn Reid's

Hello, I am athletics trainer , so I know some things.
Usain Bolt is too fast to jump!
Man can't jump if he goes too fast! Learn Physics. If he has strong leg he can jump 8,2 - 8,5 metres only
