There are sensors in our drains for runoff down here. If we let oil, coolant etc. into the drains it is very easily traced back to us so we don't do it. @GM572 It is sodium silicate, also called water glass. Kind of a cold liquid form of glass. Dries just like glass. When this stuff gets warm and dries it is JUST like glass. Really nasty stuff. You have to use a lot of caution when using it.
I got that, just after I posted this comment I looked for silica, but I still don't get why the program states that you should kill those engines. Here we can go to the facility where the cars are being scrapped and look for parts, including engine parts or even complete units. That's my beef with this program. I know they are totally un-practical gas gozzling tanks, but some people will not trade theirs in and they could use those parts. And lots of cars that were destroyed in this program weren't even gas gozzlers, just older cars. I'm talking of course about all the kick ass(some of them classics) imports, from VW and Audi to Toyota, Nissan or Mitsubishi. I saw lots of really good, honest cars die. Not a single drop got into any storm drain. You would not believe the fines you get in Kalifornia for one drop of oil, or coolant getting into a storm drain. There are sensors in our drains for runoff down here. If we let oil, coolant etc. into the drains it is very easily traced back to us so we don't do it. The state comes around all the time looking for stuff like this to fine us for. Can add up to 100's of thousand of dollars. NO COOLANT WENT UNCOLLECTED.

@GM572 It is sodium silicate, also called water glass. Kind of a cold liquid form of glass. Dries just like glass. When this stuff gets warm and dries it is JUST like glass. Really nasty stuff. You have to use a lot of caution when using it.

Here we can go to the facility where the cars are being scrapped and look for parts, including engine parts or even complete units. That's my beef with this program. I know they are totally un-practical gas gozzling tanks, but some people will not trade theirs in and they could use those parts. And lots of cars that were destroyed in this program weren't even gas gozzlers, just older cars. I'm talking of course about all the kick ass(some of them classics) imports, from VW and Audi to Toyota, Nissan or Mitsubishi. I saw lots of really good, honest cars die. Cars one would only dream of having :| .

I saw some videos posted by auto recycling companies from Western Europe, that's how they do it.
Drain the fluids, complete parts strip, select the good from bad and storage. There's money to be made and resources to save in that.

@iggy151 Zero!!! I have answered this a few times but there was no coolant that went into any storm drain. Just off screen we have a 15 gallon barrel of speedi dry. Not a single drop got into any storm drain. You would not believe the fines you get in Kalifornia for one drop of oil, or coolant getting into a storm drain. Not to say I cleaned it up, I had my helper do all the dirty work.

Low income families get screwed paying 3-4 times market value on these pieces of junk at buy here pay here lots, with exorbitant interest, because greedy banks won't finance them. Many pay MORE than NEW car payments because banks won't finance them, but these lots will. It's fucking sick.

Offensivesurvival perpetuates the myth that if lenders charge higher interest to poorer people, it can only be evidence of greed. Statistics that poorer people are much more likely to default on loans--thereby increasing the cost of doing business--have no appeal to such presumptuous 3rd parties who hold no financial stake in such transactions. Such self-anointed people think interest rates exist to satisfy their morally superior notions of social justice more than reflect economic realities.

The truth is these JEW bankers got control of our currency in 1913 when Congress officially became a criminal organization by giving them the power to print our money. All that said, what offensivesurvival says about the Federal Reserve is true in that it IS a criminal enterprise in collusion with the White House and Congress. The crime is counterfeiting. If you and I privately increased the money supply to finance our profligate spending, we'd be charged with counterfeiting and go to prison. The Fed is doing exactly the same thing for the profligate spending of the President and members of Congress. You are correct on that.

Charging money for helping someone out--whether it's shoveling their driveway or lending them money--is not a sin. It's Capitalism, the most moral system of social interaction on the planet. Considering US banks should be controlled by congress for the interests of the PEOPLE, and not for interest payments, I could care less if Granny went broke loaning money. The Cash for Clunkers will go down as one of the most idiotic and wasteful programs ever devised by a government. Instead of the really old cars being trade up for these two, they will be patched up and kept on the road longer by people who can not afford a new vehicle. The net result of this program was a fail for citizens and a win for banks and corporations. Thank you Mr. and Mrs taxpayer for your money! We will be back for more, so set some aside.
