  • this is rubbish. most of what their saying dose not even make sense!

  • Sorry but we need to ban stem cell research because it is witchcraft and it is a sin to play God. Only god can create life. If you dont give your soul to Chrisitanity then you will burn in hell forever that is a fact.

  • @JesusChristRulesYOU why would someone who loves you burn you forever?

  • weird

  • IT'S MONCHICHI! KAWAII!

  • They wouldn't be giving everyone the same genetic code, they'd just be eliminating disease form society. In my opinion this would be a good thing. If they gave everyone the same genetic code, we would all look the same. Because the sperm is still fertilising the egg, genetic diversity is still created, just less health problems.

  • STOP TESTING ON ANIMALS!! CRUEL BASTARDS!

  • very good, all break throughs need experiments.

  • Remember dolly the sheep. it died of cancer.

Wasn’t this cause by the process of injecting the protein into a new cell?

  • nothing wrong with choosing healthy embryos via IVF so that the children are healthy and their children will also be healthy.

nothing wrong with using gene therapy to correct a disorder, this is medical not cosmetic.

i do have issues with couple just choosing for traits because most physical and mental traits are mulit genetic, which means vast tampering and therefore more risks of something horrible going wrong, but replacing mitochondria should be safe enough, its to treat an illness.

  • @SexayLayD2 I agree that there are risks to this. My point is that this isn't sufficient justification for making it illegal; otherwise, we'd have to ban every single activity that carries a risk comparable to this one. As I argued earlier, the risk isn't even that great here.

And I have no objections to "creat[ing] a super human;" my objection would be to imposing this by force. If, however, people voluntarily chose to improve the species this way, I'd have no objections to it.

  • Anyone who says we are limiting the gene pool is not paying attention to the video and does not understand how rare mitochondrial defects are. This is science people. We do multiple things at once.

  • @SexayLayD2 First of all, I don't think there's any inherent problem with genetically engineering humans. I agree that it could, hypothetically, be misused in the ways you mention, but I find it somewhat unlikely. Nowadays, the favoured method would be preimplantation genetic diagnosis. It would be impossible to eliminate certain traits with this method, short of passing a law requiring this. Are you saying that if something carries even some risk of misuse, it should be illegal?

  • @ianmathwiz7 um, i think there is a inherent problem with the patenting the genetic code. the ethics of bio-genetics is complex. why so cavalier in your position?

  • @horseloverbouquet With patenting the genetic code, I agree, but I don't see what the problem is with modifying humans, per se. It seems to me that the only way to consistently argue against human genetic engineering is to argue against genetic engineering, period.

I don't think I'm being cavalier at all; I was just saying why the specific risks the other person mentioned aren't nearly as risky as she thinks, and challenging her to take her position to its logical conclusion

  • @ianmathwiz7 A) cavalier was probably the wrong word, i retract it. B) covering the 5w's about Genetic modification and how its problematic will require a video response; too much theory for a limited space. also merry Saturnalia, Ian.

  • @horseloverbouquet Merry Saturnalia as well!

Also, if you have time to make a video on the subject, I'd love to see it. PM me or something if you do so.

  • her voice needs to fucking die

  • @SexayLayD2 Why?

  • they try to sell it like its a good thing but they don't fool me. even if I could have some sort of regeneration DNA genetically altered into mine I would refuse, I'm not so weak that I need to alter myself to accept the world for what it is. death is not to be feared it is to be accepted as a part of life and our reality, what we really fear is not knowing what's going to happen when we die but that is a problem for when we are dead and should not affect how we interact with people in life .V.

  • @MaximumKahnage Who said death is something to be feared? Besides, I don't see why it's supposed to be accepted. We've been pushing back the boundaries of death since our ancestors first figured out how to filter water. Our niche involves our mind; how does our using it make us weak?

  • her eggs are only defective because she already hit menopause... and hitlers perferct race dream is coming true

  • @MrNavyninja Ah, the obligatory Hitler reference...Godwin's Law, anyone?

In any case, I defy you to name a single proponent of transhumanism or voluntary genetic engineering who shares the same vision as Hitler.

  • i wonder if theres an 'american' gene and we can eliminate that...

  • It's called survival of the fittest, dumb asses. There's a reason some people have defective eggs. It's because their genes shouldn't be passed on. Woo hoo, elimination of diversity. Can't wait.

  • Fuck survival of the fittest, we don't need that shit anymore!

The whole catch about having this much technology is that we are no longer subject to natural selection. The normal rules no longer apply to us, we play a different game now.

Incidentally, BBC and I don't agree about what designer babies are... replacing faulty mitochondria is a long way from the plot of GATTACA, and that scenario is (maybe rightly) why "designer baby" carries a negative connotation.

  • @LadyPennyroyal So, obviously, you think we should get rid of healthcare as well, right? After all, doctors save a lot of people whose genes shouldn't be passed on...

  • @ianmathwiz7 OK, there is no way in HELL I'm getting into an argument on YouTube. Nice try, buddy :)

  • @LadyPennyroyal Fair enough.

  • at 0:35 he says forever funny

    forevah

  • lol bad genes goes down to generations....talk about Americans....

    America! F@ck yeah! LOL

  • What's wrong with designer babies? NOTHING, YOU STUPID RELIGIOUS FUCKS!

  • 666 EVIL RUNS WORLD POOR MONKEYS

  • Yes, God forbid we stop women from having defective eggs. What a horrible thing to do. Not every women has defective eggs, so NO, it wouldn't limit the human gene pool in any significant way. Maybe you should get an education before you speak on such matters. Let me guess - You're Christian.

  • this had better be a GOOD thing...

  • Designer Vermin

  • This is wrong to bad for the women who have defective eggs they'll justhave to live with it desginer babies is wrong it makes me feel sick :P bleh no one has the right to choose there baby you get what you get

  • This is a wonderful development, and like all technologies, it can be abused.

We should and will eliminate vast numbers of diseases and conditions with this tech.

  • ya the cute monkeys till they bite the shit out of you and good luck deaLING WITH THERE STINKIN SHIT there fuckin vermin dirty filty creatures kill em all

  • I CAN"T WAIT FOR DESIGNER BABIES!

    OMG I CAN"T WAIT!

    THIS IS SO WONDERFUL!

I can also make sure my kids look great too.

    Blond hair blue eyes

Also smart, strong, and everything else THIS..... IS..........

    AWESOME! :D

  • I'm really nicely sculpted I have a good gene base for designer babies so as long as I get to choose a well rounded luscious willing secondary woman it would be fun to try it out......

  • @NinjaChampionKO You clearly do not have a good gene base as you display narcissistic tendencies, something that the human race doesn't need more of.

  • Designer babies,

Mixing Variety with Perfection would be of The ultimate benefit for The human race...

  • This is a stupid idea.

  • Those are cute monkeys!

  • no good will come from designer babies, the average size for dicks will be like 14 inches long and 10 inches wide

  • @lee3 Holy crap, OUCH! *lol*

  • @lee3 LOL, what's wrong with that? LOL XD

  • @lee3 Okay, like honestly tell me one good reason why designer babies are bad... Instead of a dumb reply.

  • Genetically modified animals & humans is immoral. If anybody seen the movie The Island then you will know what I'm talking about.

  • How is it immoral if it'll help people live to the best of their abilities?

Although I see the point in how it'll thin out our diversity, and how scientists can control us using technology.

  • @EnigmaEvocative

    omg, wtf?

Scientist can't control people with this technology!

That's about as stupid as saying the government puts parasites in our drinking water to control out minds.

And is going to put Vchips in everyone.

Yes, some people actually believe that, I hope you don't.

Also how would it thin out our diversity?

As long as we don't start making ever baby the EXACT same there will always be genetic diversity, just free of bad genes.

  • @EnigmaEvocative I don't understand how scientists or anyone for that matter can "control" you through this... And, not everyone will want to make their babies the same as everyone else... That's just a dumb hypothesis... How would say an Asian woman get their child to be a white, blond, with blue eyes like everyone seems to think will happen... It's just stupid to think everyone is going to do that... Even with white folks.

  • @hstone39

    Haaaah.

Yeah because a fictional movie is totally means to argue a case.

    You fucking retard.

  • @hstone39 That's a frickin "movie"... Of course, to spice up the story and make things suspenseful they have to add the flare of them being cropped for their organs. But, like I said, that's just a movie. We in modern times have regenerative medicine. We don't need organs from other people anymore. Plus, those were clones, not genetically modified people... Get your facts straight! Clones and designer babies are DIFFERENT... wow man... there are so many dumbasses in this world...

  • anyone remember the movie Gattaca?

  • @rez3 Yep. Ironically, that movie first turned me on to transhumanism and genetic engineering, because I thought the arguments against them were nowhere near as convincing as the arguments for them.

  • As long as this is kept in the private sector and out of the hands of the government, I see no problem. Though keeping it as such may be a tough battle I'll admit.

  • people with genetic diseases shouldnt have kids anyway why cant they adopt and stop making retards

  • Someone should have given that advice to your parents.

  • Read 'Breakpoint' by Richard A Clarke.

  • Not only are designer babies a bad idea it'll thin out the variety of our species. The closer we get to everyone being the same the more likely the species will go extinct. variety insures survival of the species as a whole. Also it prevents gene defects if everyone is the same then we are basically inbreeding.

After genes next is nanomachines: they'll use those to "regulate" our adrenaline and emotions in tense situations. Before you know it they'll control how we feel.

  • We already have designer babies. Men and women tend to choose their partner based on looks, personality, intelligence, health, sense of humor, etc. What's the difference in choosing a sperm donor based on the same criteria? If anything, it would increase choice and diversity.

The goal of science is not to control you, it's to help you. Vaccines, space exploration, computing: this is not a Hollywood blockbuster. The scientists aren't here to take over the world.

  • @Garlannd Gene defects only happen because there is a bad gene in your gene pool. With designer babies you can eliminate that... Did you not understand that manipulating genes also mean being able to take out any bad ones? Plus, not everyone will want to make their babies the same as everyone else... That's just a stupid guess of what billions of people would want. And, our technology ensures our survival, not our animal instincts anymore. All that survival of the species crap is LONG gone buddy

  • @dadiddlydooda maybe you are right, manipulating genes can lead us to evolve more rapidly than the darwin theory suggests by natural selection. This can really be the key to accelerate the process. One problem here is the fact that big changes may create two types of humans at the beginning, and some people may not accept these differences. Only rich people could pay for it? And what about our future...very similar genetic code? Its too risky right now as we dont know much about it.

  • Designer babies would be awesome. I could finally design my master race of of clones.

All genetically modified to be able to activate their ATP glands at will, and be able to increase their natural steroid production at will. I can also alter their metaclorian count Allowing them to manipulate the force

Then I can finally construct my giant death star trick the vice roy to blow up nabu and rule the galaxy!

  • Thanks for posting a BBC World News segment! Love the BBC!

  • this is great

  • i am all for this. personally when i am ready to have a child i am going to have genetic engineers give him plenty of advantages such as no predisposition to disease, high intellect, good looks, he will inherit my penis so he should be good there tho.

  • So we wipe out a few diseases? Why not start altering people's looks, intelligence, strength, and everything else? If we do one thing then it opens the door for everything else.

For people who believe in evolution they should understand that this is Darwin's laws being destroyed. We have escaped evolution as a race as the weak and infected should be dying off. Our technology preserves them.

  • Darwins law is universal. So we wipe out a few diseases & become "perfectly" healthy. So what. Another race can still melt our faces off with a plasma gun. Something we don't have yet. The law still exists. You know?

  • Where does Darwin say that without completely natural selection every living thing is doomed?

Look around you: If mother nature really cared, we'd be dead already. Simply having consciousness and not breeding by instinct would seem to be a disadvantage, but it's actually been one of our secrets to success. If we could alter people's intelligence and strength, then they wouldn't be weak and infected and wouldn't need "preserving".

  • In this case, an infertile person now has the chance to have children. If those children are healthy and fertile, where's the genetic downside? You've just circumvented the need for death to do the job.

  • We'd be limiting our gene pool by doing this.

  • How? How is having more options with who to breed with limiting the gene pool?

It's comparable to moving from a farm to the city....more choice, more diversity.

  • More options? You're limiting diversity by giving everyone the same genetic code.

  • @Garlannd I'm glad someone else has a brain lol

  • @Garlannd Is that harming anyone?

  • @Garlannd And, you're mistaken. The genetic code is still the same as the original baby's... The only thing different is the vector DNA (I think that's what it's called. The "egg whites" if you will). Nobody in the world can have the same genetic code, unless it's a clone (I'm pretty sure). Plus there's too much of this genetic code to make "everyone"'s the same. You actually create more diversion since you're adding on extra bits of "genetic code" on to the original (pretty sure I'm right).

  • @Garlannd It's not limiting diversity when your kid looks like the elephant-man.

  • @Garlannd I am fairly sure that everyone will want plant, shark, or fungi DNA in their bodies ....

  • @LucienZakhaev Screw plants, shark, and fungi...give me a prehensile tail :P

  • @Garlannd I would give anything to prevent the mental health problems that run in my family.

  • @Garlannd my point exactly!

  • @Garlannd You really need to do more research before go running your mouth.

  • God deserves a break

  • In my opinion, the news strikes me with incredible irony, the irony that is the scientists who were involved in this project most likely believe in evolution...however with this experiment they are literally playing "god".

    Just my 2 cents.

  • I don't get it.

  • Is this not technically....manipulating the course of nature? What about evolution?

  • technology is a big part of human evolution. this is evolution. now we can take it into our own hands.

  • Yup we can use it to increase the metaclorian count in our children and finally create real Jedi.

  • What do yo mean, not good at all? This is fantastic! Think about it. If hereditary diseases could be removed, in a small number of generations all passed on deficiencies will be eliminated forever. That's the potential at least, if used the right way.

  • Tsk tsk. Not good news at all.

  • Great! Now Gattica is now Science fact, not fiction.

  • Ah, because playing with monkeys makes it seem safe and hey, they are monkeys and look like humans, so it must be OK if it works on them.

    "The perfect Child"

  • Ever-time they screw with mother nature in ends in tragedy.

They should stop funding this bull crap.

  • Not every time.

  • Yes ever single frickin time, when are you going to wake up ?

  • I've been awake. It's you who's still sleeping.

  • Comment removed

  • no this means they will be able to cure genetic diseases, like sickle cell, limit hearattacks, diabettes, parkingsons, etc.

    Its excellent news.

  • It sucks they don't know what they're doing .

Example Agent Orange - It was billed as safe now Vietnam is on their 3 generation of birth defects.

  • Cancer has cures. It's all about catching it early. Thats why theres an 80% success rate or better with child-hood cancer. But if they used this method to replace the parts that make us able to GET cancer. Nobody will.

  • Says the person talking on the internet, has surgery and vaccines given to them, and probably owns a pet :-P

  • (these things "screw" with mother nature. If you haven't noticed by now, we've been doing it since we made the first wheel)

  • Sure but this stuff screws with stuff that might not come apparent until the idiot that opened "Pandora's Box" has long been dead and buried.

  • these scientist freak me out
