  • Nice car. I had one just like it but it had the Eldorado dual quad engine.

  • @1musiclvr Cool! That's quite a car! I hope you had good memories of it! Thanks! :) Jack

  • The '56 Rolls Royce used the same trunk mounted A/C and outlets. The tubes were hidden in the headliner.

  • @nomebear Hey, Pat! Very interesting! I wonder if they purchased the system from Frigidaire or was it A/C Delco at that point... Thanks! :) Jack

  • @brians09challenger Hey, Brian! Yes indeed...so much of Cadillac's image centered around the grille, those fins and tail lights...and of course, the bumpers! Glad you had one of these fine machines! Thanks! :) Jack

  • This is a beautiful car, Jack, there was a '55 convertible at a show here a couple of years ago, it was white with red leather.... Very beautiful :D ... And very large LOL

The only other time I've seen rear mounted A/C evaporator's is with the '40's Packard, that set up has to be pretty rare, even back then :D

  • @drewerz01 Hey, Mike! You are so right..these cars were BIG! And they represented the very top of the ladder to which GM buyers could ascend. Our neighborhood grocer had one of about this vintage....I had a ride in it once..he only used it for weekend rides with his wife. His go to work car was the lowest priced two door sedan he could find from Ford, or Plymouth or Chevy! This was in the days of the local corner grocer! I remember seeing an A/C Packard like that years ago. Thanx! :)Jack

  • Jack, When I was born, my ride home was in a 1956 Cadillac Fleetwood "60 Special" model. I can't say I remeber the ride, or the car. My Dad spoke fondly of it for his entire life. 17,000 1956 Fleetwoods were built. The 365 CI V-8 produces 285HP and 400 LB/FT of torque, and has the famous "batwing" air cleaner housing. There are two igniton timing marks to allow the customer to select whether the engine would require regular or premium fuel. Rear fin design is unique to the Fleetwood. Nice car.

  • @jferg7159 Hey, Joe! Wow! This is really a historical car for you! Methinks my ride home was via taxi!...we didn't have a car until 1952, and then it was the Henry J, a major embarrassment for me in high school! Cool about the timing marks...I notice some cars now give the choice of grade and adjust themselves for ping free driving! Thanks! :) Jack

  • Amazing Jack; as much as we have discussed those clear tubes (that usually are cracked and yellowed), you actually found one. I was always amazed at those a/c cars as our 56 Mercury had those. Bravo!

P.S. Be sure and get you some of that delicious Zephyrhills bottled spring water. Sure miss that here in Tennessee.

  • @yellowdrinker Bravo that you had the system in your 56 Mercury. I filmed one some time ago, but took it down because of the license plate and music thing...I look thru those vids occasionally and I'll see if I can locate it and scrub it of music and plates. Zephyrhills is coming up soon..and i will be there! Yep, they are famous for their spring water! Thanks! :) Jack

  • I have seen the odd 50's car with the roof mounted air vents the 56 Lincolns also had them as I seen a few around at car shows.

  • @monarch1957 Hey, Barry! I have seen a 56 Mercury with this arrangement...at Old Town..but have not seen it in a long time. I've also seen the Lincoln with that arrangement. As I remember, Chrysler 300B in 1956 also offered A/C and it was a rear mounted unit in the trunk..but instead of wands, there were openings in the parcel shelf that fed the cold air. Outside air intake was via pods just like the Cadillac. This was indeed the early days of A/C in cars! Thanks! :) Jack

  • I had one but no AC, that is one car that I wish I still had and wish I could afford to replace as well as had the garage for it. Thats why I sold my 56 Cadillac, lack of garrage space here in the NYC LI area. 9 more years to retirement in Florida and room for cars and year round car events !!!!!!!

  • @soccercleatscrush Ah yes...garage space and insurance rates are a big deterrent to cars in the major cities. Sorry you lost yours, but Florida might give you that opportunity to get another! Plenty of shows here, one of the best places for the old and even new car hobby that I know of! Thanks! :) Jack

  • @raconter1 We have Historical insurance here too, I have JC Taylor and insurance isn't a problem here in the NYC area, its garage space!

  • @soccercleatscrush Good news that it's available there...here they require the insured car be in a locked garage. Still is a bargain! Thanks! :) Jack

  • Nice looking car. My favourites have always been 1956 Cadillacs, the 56 Buicks and 56 Chevys. I've heard of cars of the 50s with A/C, but I've never seen them. Apparently, only those who could afford it had them on their cars. I love the windshield wipers.

  • @Seattlecarnut Hey, Jason! Glad I picked one of your favorites to video! A/C was very rare it is true, and these were the days when wipers didn't have a minimum swept area, and car companies were trying to figure out how to clear those big windshields they created! Thanks! :) Jack

  • Great example of one of the best cars made in this era.

  • @ncautoman57 It sure was a great car...any luxury that could be imagined was here! Thanks! :) Jack

  • @raconter1 We had a 1959 cadillac when I was a kid. I really loved that car.

  • This is one big boat but it is a very cool boat with that massive evaporator and compressor. Fortunately for us now engineers found an easier way to put air conditioning in cars. This series 60 does look in perfect shape.

  • @cheddyrod Hey, Chester! Yeah, the scale of this makes one think it could air condition a small home! I was impressed with its overall shape! Thanks! :) Jack

  • nicee !

  • @wardawg07 Hey, Warren! I agree...and its air conditioned too! Thanks! :) Jack

  • Only the wealthy could have A/C back in 1956.. My dad says the first vehicle he remembered having A/C was a '68 Buick Skylark Sport Wagon my grandmother had..

  • @Sarcasticscum Hey, Nathan! That's true...A/C wasn't widely available, and only to be expected in a high priced car. One shocker was factory A/C in a 57 Ford...evaporator behind the dash, vents built into the dashboard. I've only seen one car like that. My folks had a 58 Rambler Classic Cross Country wagon with factory A/C. Definitely the exception to the usual! Thanks! :) Jack

  • @raconter1 Rambler had A/C early on.

  • Very nice! i bet you could hang meat in this Cadillac! ;) LOL i like the cooling system, very neat having the vents on the ceiling, that way the cool air would sink down and cool everyone inside! i just love them '50s cars, very cool indeed! and this one is literally "cool" LOL as always thanks for sharing Jack! ;)

  • @BRENTHENRY1989 Hey, Brent! Definitely a pioneering car...I remember 56 Mercurys with this type of arrangement. It is rare to see these cars now, particularly with all their parts intact. Glad I stumbled on this one! Thanks! :) Jack
