It's random, when you die or respawn, you get a new armor perm. Example: If you have the Mark 6 armor, and you die, you could spawn with recon, EVA, CQB, or Mark 6 again. Of corse they might put more permutations in there.

Acually no, you CAN have permutations, you just can't choose them.

wel that just doesn't makes sense, unless you mean you can have the mod for armour permutations but you cannot choose what one to have, i think i know now...unless you could bind a certain armour permutation (eg: recon) to a specific colour variant of Master Chief, THEN you could remember and choose what one you want :).
