Early Grand Old Opry performer Pop Stoneman, with his very talented family. A rare and delightful piece of footage. From the 1967 film "Hell On Wheels", starring Marty Robbins. Wonderful. Keep posting.
i was born in kentucky so i can make fun of southern people. the Stonemans were 100% bat-nuts! i love them. so clueless and innocent. check out crazy gold boots! she really has some moves. and Uncle Jimmy plays a mean rock-a-billy style slap bass. not too many bands have the gumption to do a show like this anymore. lots of personality. The mock-u-mentary film 'A Mighty Wind' makes fun of all these style bands in a poignant way. (and if you're southern i doubt you'll know what "poignant" means)
I am one of five Johnson girls. We're from Many, Louisiana and I love your video, but while our daddy wasn't like the dad in the song, he was a strong disiplinarian, which I am thankful for today. He passed in '09 and I miss him dearly. Thanks again and keep making that good music!!!
On TV after Church Sunday`s,there show was on & I fell SO I LOVE W/ these Girl`s it made me want & NEED to Play Music as my life`s calling ! THAN-Q Lady`s & GOD BLESS & Keep You in our Heart`s of the USA !
And I thought Rhonda Vincent hopped around the stage a lot. What a wonderful group of musicians and obviously a wonderful family. They don't make 'em like this any more.
My name is Laura Stoneman and these very talented people are my aunts, uncles, and my grandpa. Not one person ever mentions how talented my Uncle Jimmy is on the bass. That man really knew how to thump that bass. When he first started playing the bass he played one that my grandpa made and they called it the Whomper because of the sound it made. He was truly marvelous.
@StevePerrysLady Your Uncle Jimmy was a fantastic bass player and is a huge influence on me. He is solid, creative, and amazingly flashy just when he needs to be. This clip showcases that perfectly. That little break he gets is very complex and has an unexpected melody. This is the kind of lick that separates the men from the boys.
my name is robert i am roni stonemans youngest son. i would like to thank everyone for there wonderful comments. hey drumnguy77 you say you might know me are you from smyrna tn.
@banjohead62 wow... much respect to your mother and her family... brought a lot of joy to lot of people...i first knew her from hee haw , and just recently discovered the stoneman family music.. and i love it! id love to talk with your mom, im sure shed be fun nd interesting to talk with and be around
I saw Ronnie at Pallirosa several years ago. It was an evening I will never forget. According to the present owner there now, she was married there. (Now known as the Turner Opry House, it is really worth a visit.)Thank you for posting this!
What a treat! I remember seeing the Stoneman Family in Kitchener ON in 1968. Brings back memories. They were amazing in person! Always loved this song and haven't heard it in years!
My Mom used to play Bass and sing with Roni in the mid 70s..I remember her here at the house with her children..All these songs bring back alot of memories, especially this song.
I just finished the "Roni " book, Great read!!! she had a tough life married at 17 then 4 kids. She autographed it for me. this is another Marty Robbins opus I'd imagine! like Road to Nashville
Donna was born the same year as my mom ... here she moves her legs like a rag doll - with agility of 9 year old kid! Pop Stoneman must've been proud with kids this talented.
Don't underestimate Roni. She is the first lady of the banjo and known as the best female banjo player in the world. She has a great voice for those who love the Appalachian sound. She could buck dance better than anyone and is funny as heck.
It's true that Ronnie didn't have the moves, the looks, or the voice. But it is also true that most consider her one of the top five banjo players who ever lived. Loved to hear her pick.
used to watch them on Hee Haw, that Donna could really move her legs, and the other girl Ronnie didn't seem to be able to move at all. love this group and love all their songs.
Amazing family !!!!! I love the style !!! Greetings from Paraguay !!

The 1966 MGM label single of The Five Little Johnson Girls is definitely one of country music's definitive classics. Absolute, utter perfection!

I can't stand country music these days; that said, I love the Stonemans!!!
I was a tadpole when they had their syndicated TV show back in the late 1960's; never saw the likes like them.
Totally awesome!!!
Thank you so much for posting this; I'd adding it to my favorites.

Ernest "Pop" Stoneman will be inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame this year.
I also enjoyed seeing Roni Stoneman perform her comedy routines and her banjo playing on "Hee Haw".
