The thing that most people probably aren't aware of is that Gillis is only responsible for half the solo on the album version. The high harmonic that comes up and swells is where Gillis' solo ends and Jeff Watson's begins. He's trying to duplicate the style of another unique player, Jeff Watson. Every guitar player has a bad night. I've seen the body of Gillis' work and I'm satisfied he's a great picker. End of story.
Funny, the two greatest axemen in my opinion both last names start with Gil.(Paul Gilbert and Brad Gillis). Both have the most unique styles and sound. What a duet those two would be?
Brad even some 20 plus years later, is still the ultimate whammy wizard. They can always get faster, but not weirder with the strings than the best soloist from Dio's Hear-n-aid in 85. Remember? Gillis is definitely a tremelo GOD. If you don't believe me, try and duplicate him. Might as well buy something without the Floyd Rose!
brad is better in some respects than watson, and not in others. you can't just say one player is outright better than the other unless you're talking about The Edge at which point everyone is better.
Yeah, it's cool to see Brad tackle Jeff's half of the solo, too. He isn't as effortlessly fast as Watson, though, so one can hear his limitations in that regard (not that some practice wouldn't bring his speed up to par, of course).
Gillis truly is a great player. His first solo album, Gilrock Ranch, is one of my all-time fave guitar records. And Night Ranger kicks so much ass.
I have to agree, to a certain extent. I think "Speak of The Devil" is one of the greatest guitar albums ever made. Brad is smokin' on that album !!!!!!!!
met brad at a show in 06 that I brought some of my students to. he was way nice and still very good. he's gettin' up in years, but still rocks out and looks like he works out!
I love Brad, one of my fave guitarists of all time. Interesting to see him miss some of Jeff's notes, they are two different types of players...Jeff more of speedster, of course Brad's probably the baddest whammy artist in history..haha.
missed a couple of notes on Jeff's part.. I love both their solos... didnt think he could pull it off 100% cuz brad was never the speed demon Jeff was....awesome job nonetheless cus very few would even notice the missed details
That looks like Vintage 1983 Van Halen on the background screen, live at the US festival?I have never seen Gillis have such a hard time with playing a solo,Sounds great though....
Wow that was really week acutally. His solo was perfect but Jeff's was really out of control with the notes

Let me put this simply. The guitar solo in Don't Tell Me You Love Me is the best guitar solo of all time.

Ouch, that really hurt!
I was never a Night Ranger fan, but Brad with OZZY still blows me away to this day. I actually liked him MORE than Randy.
