i dont like the i have/want the biggest dane deal. it's cruel , i have two i bought for health and temperament not bragging rights. people insult my 30 inch dane like she doesnt have feelings because shes small.it disgusts me..at least she wont be howling from hip problems or die early from the heart stress.
I know, its aweful. This dog could be growing too quickley because of his diet, which could absoulty cause alot of joint problems. As odd as it is, you want to try and span your danes growth over the longest period of time possible.
so what if ppl get there dogs ears croppped, i dont see the dog in pain, i dont see it crying, or yulping. so i dont see a problem with it, so what if ppl do or dont get their dogs ears croppped ? just get over it and stop trying to be the savior for dogs everywhere who get their ears cropped, serioulsy who cares.... get over yourselfs.
Soooo recognizable! Our great dane (yes indeed, they're GREAT ;) responds to NOTHING, not even 'down' or hardly at 'come!' BUT: all of a sudden lady dog responds within half a second when invited to come into our bed (.... I know, we shouldn't.... but try to say "no" to our princess of all dogs...impossible!) or when I have bread in my hands. She goes completely wild when there is bread within a mile of her. I just loooooove great danes!!
if you stand in front of a great dane and take your arm down to your knee and make a Flat open hand and slowly raise your arm up while tellin the dog to sit,, when we got our dane we had her sitting in no time by doin that,, other dane owners had told me that also
I met a Dane in Petsmart once that like. He kept barking at me and jumping on me and pawing at me. It was annoying. I'm glad I trained my Great Danes to have good manners.
@ScorpionRayn THAT is the owner's fault. Bad dogs usually come from bad owners. If they can't spend the time (DAILY!) training a dog, they shouldn't have one. A good obedience training class isn't expensive, and it'll teach the ADULTS for life, as well as the dog on how to raise an obidient and happy dog. Well worth the money.
i have a great dane and she is 1 and a half and she is the most loyal, gentle and loving dog i have ever met. As well as being dopey she is very very smart and would play with anything and everything.
nah, unless they are HUGE danes don't get to 37 38 inches until they are older. and that would still be a HUGE dane. mine is 34 and a half at the shoulder, and it's a girl. well.. you could be talkin' about at the head. but they measure danes by how tall they are at the shoulder. haha. he's probably 30 to 32 at the should.
how sweet! don't they just luv grandma? my mom loved my girls so much, she went and got her own baby girl dane! our girls have natural ears too. you know what i hate? when people crop their ears and cut off their dew claws, and in 1 year drop them off at a shelter because they don't want them anymore.
Your Mom is like my Mom. She would drive over to my house just to visit my Dane even when I wasn't home. Sometimes she would kidnap him and take him over to Grandmas
Man he is huge and BEAUTIFUL! i love his color! i just got a Harlequin great dane thats 9 months old, man i thought he was huge! i would like to see him now =D
He looks like a mantle/harliquin. Harliquins and blacks are supposed to be the biggest of the danes. We have a three month old black and I couldn't love anything more. I won't crop the ears. They are the best dogs ever. :)
just wondering if your dane ear was cropped....mine was and it was painless and didnt bother him at all. His ear stood up only after a month. i don't know why i hear bad things about ear cropping.
@stevedanieltube Good on you for not cropping. Personally I like floppy ears.. I hate the fact some people put their pet/best friend through that pain for fashions sake. Same goes for docking tails (which is is now illegal in the UK due to the fact it's considered cruel and has no real benefit). There really is no need to be cutting up your dog, and I agree with luvsirpaul, you can tell yourself it doesn't hurt all you want, but I'll bet it does. Chop your own ears up and tell me how you get on.
"i don't know why i hear bad things about ear cropping."
Um...maybe because it IS painful for the pup (no matter how much you try to convince yourself otherwise) and entirely unnecessary? Would you cut off part of your kid's ear? I would hope not. So why do you think it's cool to chop off part of your dog's ear? There's really NO good reason to crop a dog's ears. It's just typical human selfishness.
I agree. We are not fond of ear cropping either. I will say that everyone should get their dog a gastropexy. It is where they staple the stomach to the inside of the chest wall. It prevents them from getting bloat. Which Danes can die from within hours.
First thing I noticed was that he wasn't ear-cropped! Finally, a normal looking Dane! Against the law in Australia, and when I see USA Danes cropped, their heads look too big!!! :P
I agree with you guys as well. My three year old male dane has his big floppy ears. Always will! I think it just shows the gentleness of the breed. Your boy is gorgeous! You have posted videos of my boy, feel free to check them out.
@stevedanieltube : Absolutely true! Having had Danes for a while now, and losing one to "bloat" (gastric torsion) I can tell you - it's a horrible way to watch your dog die. Gastropexy is worth it, and they can do it when the dog is being spayed or neutered.
Also: I'll just add my 2 cents: If Popeye is 7 months and over 150 pounds, please donsider putting him on adult food now. Very large Danes live less years. And he's a beautiful dog - best of luck with him. I hope to see more.
@RitzyTrailer why would a dane ever be fed puppy food in the first place? that is neglect . they shouldnt have one if they cant feed it properly . thats like guaranteed joint problems .
@DarkRebelCafe A: Because, like all puppies, they need a specific food if you're feeding them commercial chow (unlike the raw/natural diet) that has certain ingredients to insure healthy growth. Puppies indeed need a more digestible, vitamin-enriched food for the 1st 6-12 months from weaning, but because the Danes grow so quickly and so big, I've learned a program that stops the 'growth-oriented' food at 6 or so is healthier - you don't want a Dane getting 'massive' - they do that on their own.
@stevedanieltube Great Vid! I have an 5 month old Blue female and she can be just as bad with the site command. I would like to clear one thing up tho gastropexy don't stop bloat but it will help with other stuff.
hmmm, we have a great dane pup and with all the reserch we've done we could not find any extra prevention besides waiting before and after eating and the other things, but never this. Whats it all about?
Im also not fond of ear cropping. not only is it painful, it often makes the dog look scary and un-approcable, and its a big enough problem trying to get people not to be fearful of their size
Popeye is a big boy... i will have to get video of him now. He is a big boy and turns a lot of heads. I see other Danes and Ithink they are kinda small. I see Danes that are same age as him and not nearly as big.
