@Cincinnatianer maybe 02 and prior, but i would say his last year he interacted with the audience and probably had a better relationship with them more than at any other time in his life. In 2003 in general, he had to lean on his fans as a man on the comeback trail, recovering from 2-3 years of hell, and it was awesome to see how much faith and support there was for him in getting better.
I was at this show - he was awesome but clearly wasted. It was weird because this show was canceled a few months (weeks?) earlier because he was "ill". It's crazy to re-experience this through YouTube 8 years later.
So someone uploaded this entire Elliott Smith gig at Belly Up Tavern, May 22, 2003. OH! IT BURNS A HOLE IN MY HEART. I WAS THERE with "Somebody that I used to know." (how fitting, right!?) I can't believe the ENTIRE concert is up! Oh dear. Mixed feelings. Joy. Sad. Happy. Nostalgia.
Awesomest crowd-discourse moment is at 23 min & 17 secs. where some idiot says to Elliott:
"You're fuckin' wasted, bro'", to which Elliott responds, "Well... we're kinda in the same boat". Then, without missing a beat, he launches right into his next song - The Enemy Is You. hahahahahahahahahahahahaha
He was the epitome of Cool. Damn shame he's gone.
thanks for uploading this. i just went to LA (i'm from london) to see the elliott smith wall before it's taken down. it's ruined. but it's nice to come back and see some footage i hadn't before.
@gotf yeah, the graffiti. i almost walked right past it without recognizing it. and now the owner of the place, after taking a couple hundred $ in fan donations to repaint the wall + put a plaque there, has said 'actually no i'm not gunna do that anymore i'm gunna put some big 3d sculpture thing there instead'
@plxplxkthx@gotf actually i went in to talk to the designer of it, and the man in charge of it. the 3D sculpture will indeed be the elliott smith wall, just in 3D. he will be smashing different audio recording devices and the like into small pieces, and place them in the same design as the wall. he felt it'd give the fans a more intimate experience to actually be able to feel it
Great stuff Thanks for Posting....any idea how I can get a HARD COPY???
