Apologies for the misleading title. Just a small scratch will do. The scratch becomes the starting point for the crack, which continues around the vessel, following in the path of the stress caused by the concentrated heat from the flame. It doesn't always create an exactly straight line, but it's usually fairly straight if you keep the flame steady and concentrated on a small point.
