I was practicing in the cricket nets the other day trying my hardest to chuck the ball while spinning it, ITS IMPOSSIBLE.. one cannot spin the ball while chucking it.. the ball won't spin..
I gained so much respect for arjuna after this incident. How many captains in any sport would have the balls to take his entire team off the field in defense of ONE player? What that commentator meant was, if an umpire suspects a bowler's action there is a standard procedure to follow: he should NOT call him for chucking in the match itself but can file a report on the bowler afterwards. That idiot Emmerson doesn't even know the rules.

I know that bowlers with suspect actions almost never get called for it in-game until they've been proven to have an illegal action. But what if a bowler deliberately chucks with an exaggerated elbow flex? Do you still not call that?

Sir Don Bradman described this as the worst example of umpiring he had ever seen. However, even tho I agree Murali's action is fine and the umpiring was wrong, I feel Ranatunga handled the situation pretty badly.

WHy is the "race card" always played between blacks and whites. I live in AUstralia, and I see just as much racism from blacks towards whites, but I just brush it off.

Ok, I've been following cricket for a few years now, and maybe my definition of "calling an infraction when one is committed" is skewed from not living in a big cricketing nation, but "if he thinks the action is suspect, he should call it, but i think, to me it shouldn't be out in this arena."

What that commentator meant was, if an umpire suspects a bowler's action there is a standard procedure to follow: he should NOT call him for chucking in the match itself but can file a report on the bowler afterwards. That idiot Emmerson doesn't even know the rules.

I thought that umpires are within their right to no ball a bowler if he chucks? I know that bowlers with suspect actions almost never get called for it in-game until they've been proven to have an illegal action. But what if a bowler deliberately chucks with an exaggerated elbow flex? Do you still not call that?

good on arjuna for pulling his team off; Emersons decision was SO obviously premeditated. Like many others who were called for chucking on an Oz tour. This all happened when Oz were an amazing team, they didnt need the assistance from their TEAM of umpires (they do now though!) . Darrel Hair was another umpire who liked to get involved when his team was on the ropes. Anyway, the aussies are a great team, with good blokes (bar 2 or 3 cunts), glad this guy & Hair arent around to tarnish no more

This was in 1999 after Murali was tested in Hong Kong and it was proven that he had a congenital deformity in the elbow and helicopter type wrists. Much later it surfaced that the ACB had instructed Emerson to pull this stunt off. If you call it enforcing the rules, some have the right to call it disgraceful behaviour by the umpire.

Good on him for standing by his man. Ranatunga was critisized for this, and perhaps rightly. But it takes a man of clear conviction and great courage to put his entire career on the line for the faith he has in his young bowler. All cricket fans are in debt to him for allowing Murali to play freely while he dealt with the non sensical chucking issue. What ever he did before or since, that day defined him as one of the great captains of our time.
