@Wildboared: HAHAHAHAHA! The old 'you sold off all our gold' BS! I think you've been reading the Daily Fail too much!

@JeanCadoret No it is a fact you only have to check the history books, I am apologising for nothing that should be down to clown and bliar who sold us out.
@GarryHarriman SO you were a Painter and Doper??? As a former NCO with 8 years on MR2 and 1 1/2 on MRa4 I can say it was never going to work. Why are all other aircraft sold for scrap yet the MRa4 was cut up on site? Because it saved waste of space from losing money and public embarresment when it failed to do the job it was meant to.......
£600 million to finish building and to bring into service 14 MRA4 Nimrods.....scrapped and 'replaced' by 3 reTIRED USAF RC-135 rivet joints built in 1964 in total costing £612 million. Their argument is that the 3 aircraft will cost less to run over 10 years than the Nimrods but ofcourse they will as there are only 3!! dumb!?! but the RAF need more than 3 but they do have a plan for this.....lets get France and the US to patrol our waters for free! Nice move again Conservatives!

It was that good the secret agencies wanted it for 2012 olympics. Only to be told no way , it was safe within 3 days of SDSR and its now pretty certain BAE called it as it did not work and would cost them a lot of penalties. so in return a deal was done with BAE to sacrafice Nimrod for keeeping Marham open perhaps , Typhoon contracts or perhaps the sale of the last batch of typhoons to Oman. MRA4 was never a winner in the market
David Cameron's Defense policy, a seat for himself, his family and other Conservative and Lib Dem big wigs and their families on a requisitioned British Airways Boeing 777 departing London Heathrow destination Bermuda, before the first Iranian ten kiloton yield range nuke detonates over London. Put the Nimrod MRA4 in to service, keep the Harrier GR9 in service, maintain RAF Lossiemouth and RAF Kinloss as operational military airbases and kick Mr Cameron out of 10 Downing Street.
@adrianwainer There isn't the money to do all these things and the state of most of our aircraft is poor and several types are past their best and will probably be retired post Afghan.
@adrianwainer Unfortunately we are a bit late, the people that caused this were Labour, I'f we had kicked them out 5 years ago, we would not now be in this mess.
@SuperArcherSS anything that is lying around at the time, I shit you not. Hercs probably, maybe an Avro Anson & a very pistol if there is a chance that the target might be able to fire back.
Why dosen't Royal Air Force choose P-8A Poseidon?
Does not British pride permit the choices?
I know P-8A has many problems and it will cost at least 260 million dollars par each. But P-8A is only aircraft which have next generation antisub ability,
except Kawasaki P-1 that my country gona use.
Dosen't Royal Air Force value antisub aircraft any more?
adrian, I love the Nimrod I'm an aviation anthousiats like averybody here or most I guess. Didn't mean to disparidge the work of those who build it.
Just saying old design is old. the general concept dates back from '46. I also know that b-52's currently in inventory are practically new aircrafts too. I prefer not to be angry at those who scrapped the program, or at complete stranger of wich the only thing I know is that they love flying machines, just like me.
You are talking rubbish. Nimrod MRA4, has new wings, new engines, new sensors, new computer information analysis / battle management systems and a glass cockpit. Basically the only thing which has been carried over from the original aircraft is the bare metal fuselage tube.
Nimrod MRA4, the most advanced counter insurgency / anti-asymmetric warfare aircraft currently in production, put it in to service. Nimrod MRA4, whispering death to al-Qaeda.
@adrianwainer Yeah real whispering death. They must be crapping themselves at the thought of it. 3 old boeings and 9 billion to the British taxpayer later they must think Christmas has come early in the caves in Afghanistan. Fucking shit country the UK is. Fucked over by the yanks and tory shitheads. They knew they were never going to use it. Fuck the UK being skint. . Don`t tell me about a fucking recession when they wasted billions on this pile of shit
@popol321 Not true, if it was pure genius in the first place and furthermore Nimrod MRA4 is practically a new aircraft. At best you haven't a clue what you are talking about, so kindly go and F*ck off.
What built in problems has it ? It actually has built in advantages, since for example the Comet design operates particularly competently in the lower speed range race track maneuverer envelope, an issue which is problematic with regard to the USN's adoption of the Boeing 737, as maritime patrol aircraft.
@adrianwainer it can now not fly faster than 300Knots the airframe side is almost identical to the MR2 which should have been fly by wire. The cockpit and engine side are all new yes but the aircraft now has inbuilt flight characteristics which should not be present in a modern aircraft. The wings were enlarged though the tail plane and fin weren't which caused many problems with Cof G and control. Unfotunately this "NEW" aircraft was more of a missed opportunity than a success.
@Wildboared Compare it to the P-8 - basic type designed in the 1960s (first flew 1967), remodelled in the 1990s. The P-3 dating back to a 1950s and many of those around now are P-3Bs, very old airframes, but with new avionics many users are happy to keep operating them. Its was not a flawed aircraft. Its a bespoke aircraft. After numerous cuts only 9 aircraft remained planned and they was practically new builds resulting in sky high operating costs and R&D spent pr airframe.
@fitte6 It is not bespoke most of the airframe although new build was just a copy of the original, 8 years on MR2 and 2 years on MRa4 were enough to show me how poor this aircraft was as an airframe.

what a fucking disgrace... has the government not learnt from 2 world wars? ... world war 1 is over.. they cut the military... world war 2 comes.. "oh dear we dont have anything to fight back with" and now after world war 2 this is whats happening again.. what a waste of time... i'm starting to wish i lived in a country where the government isnt comprised of pricks and dont make stupid decisions...

@adrianwainer As somoen who worked on MR2's and was to have worked on the MRa4 I think you'll find it is you who is confused, UAV's are already carrying out some of the jobs the MR2 did and the Americans have been researching it's use for maritime work for several years now. If islamist are going to attack us with Nuclear weapons then the MRA4 was never going to be able to stop it. We currently operate and own Reaper and Predator UAV's as well as all the types the Army operate..
Wouldn't really call it an upgrade? each plane is costing four hundred million pounds each; New wings, new engines, new Horizontal stabilizer, new vertical stabilizer, new landing gear, new all glass cockpit....59% of the fuselage being refurbished with the other 41% being totally replaced with composites. Devastated is the best word but thats politics , they cut us all , Labour have destroyed the last and its fitting that the election to be we should all vote LABOUR , they have made the mess so let them sort it
This is the Nimrod MRA4 (marine reconaissance arcraft 4), My dad is chief executive on it at BAE. The MRA2 was took out of service because one blew up in mid air from a fuel injection leak when they up-graded the inflight refueling system. The MRA4 is the new improved varient made for iraq and afganistan.
I wish Labour Goverment stop fucking giving money to EU and Labour Goverment giving more money to MOD to pay for repair or upgarde or better eqiment or build new Nirmrod 2 !!!!!!! LOL
Becuase Nimrod is bloody 30 years old!! she still fit!!! and one pomblem Larbour Goverment wont spent and wont upgarde or build new like Nimrod 2 in futrue it will taking off service because health and saflety on march 31 2009 and that why public moaning want Nimrod taken off aswell and because we fucking work with stink EU soon !!!!!! and I hear we might order new AWD from American we never MADE IN BRITISH
Too little: 12 instead of the original 21, to cover one of the largest and most important asw zones on the planet.
Too late: 7 (crucial) years behind schedule, with zero export potential thanks to the P-8, a tarnished reputation for safety, and massively over-budget.
Awesome aircraft. Ive been on the back and its a hell of a pieace of kit to have. I cant say its overpriced as look at the F-22 that is overpriced. Although i agree they should have bought more
Yup overpriced and late because the goverment tried to save cash and it backfired. if they ordered 25 airframes they would have made brand spanking new one's saving a lot of cash. The original airframes were built by people therefore were slightly diffrent sizes.

The nimrod has always been good, but this update makes it look something special. Lovely shot of the aircraft taking off in opening sequence.

It's like the Vulcan. A piece of art.

It gives people boners.

The Vulcan would make the taliban shit themselves, shame we dont use it now :(
snozdog 3 years ago
You cant use it over there.
Like the early Apache, the engines cant take that severe a beating.
But yeah, The vulcan rocks.

Over budget but perhaps not overpriced. It is supposed to have pretty awesome electronics inside.
t43562 4 years ago
They are pretty awesome yes but we aint getting enough of them.
EDS01475634763 3 years ago
Yup overpriced and late because the goverment tried to save cash and it backfired. if they ordered 25 airframes they would have made brand spanking new one's saving a lot of cash. The original airframes were built by people therefore were slightly diffrent sizes.

I saw the new MR4A Nimrod at RIAT 2007 and the amazing thing was how quiet it is compared with the other nimrods
Carlbotten1971 4 years ago
That's because the old one was basically 2 phantoms together without reheat and nowadays you can more power combined with less noise.
