So Anne and Richard may have been a quite happy couple both romantically and rational: Anne had her inheritance protected by Richard and he his power much improved; so the real Anne could be closer to Lady Macbeth than ever Queen Margaret; and never forget: Henry VII has as much reason to kill the nephews of Richard III than he had himself and even more: Had Richard no sons his nephews could succeed him still but for Henry their lives were a constant danger.
I still muse how much Shakespeare did fell here pray to the Tudor lies about good King Richard III – as every last monarch of a overthrown dynasty is depicted as a monster and a tyrant; ever since the days of the Roman emperors; and so is it with the story of Anne & Richard: They were betrothed in their youth but her father Warwick married her to Prince Edward, while Richard remained faithful to her and rescued Anne and by doing so preserved her Neville inheritance.
I've seen 3 now, and of the Olivier, Cook and McKellen versions, I must say that I like the Ron Cook 1983 performance better. Not just the leading actor, the way the dialogue zings along with brio and because Zoe Wannamaker is so damn cute.
Love this interetation===they got the fascism, the cynical collaberation just right, although she folds too easily. Still KST's "You do infect my eyes!" is more believable than a lot of them.
To say that Kenneth Branagh's performance, in the Naxos audio version of the play, trumps Ian's is a severe understatement. And though Kristin Scott Thomas does a decent job, she is so dispassionate that her "wooing" doesn't astound me at all.
Amazing!! Listened this album the whole day through and i thank my lucky stars that i found this full album for free download at DownloadMusic/./im ,remove the slashes .
@dajohnthomas69 Lady Anne is hypnotized by Richard because he is a manipulative sociopath. She also goes along with him as she is on the losing side of the War of the Roses and as such has nothing since all of her claim to nobility have been cut off. It is either marry Richard, or loose all of her status and money. There is more happening here than just his amazing voice.
Kristin Scott Thomas was excellent as Lady Anne, but as much as it pains me to criticise an amazing actor like Ian, he didn't convince me in this scene. He wasn't powerful, he wasn't sexy, and he wasn't particularly charismatic. And I know Ian McKellan is capable of delivering all those things.
And where did he get "old enough to be her father" from? The real Richard was all of about three years older than Anne. Of course, when did this play have anything to do with the real people? :-P
McKellan doesn't have to be sexy, only a really good actor, he is even worse than disney villains and the way it was written and played was ingenious. And I don't think he said old enough to be her father... when he dances out he says, "What! I, that kill'd her husband and his father," Lady Anne is taken in because she is so vain and seems to care for her beauty more than her husband. McKeller plays the part really well.
Way to miss my point. I said he wasn't sexy OR powerful OR charismatic. Richard doesn't have to be all those things but he has to be at least ONE of them or the scene makes no sense.
"And I don't think he said old enough to be her father.." - Why don't you try clicking "More Info" and read what I'm talking about before embarrassing yourself further?
I find it sad that McKellan is more remembered by his role as Gandalf a wizard from a pointless fairy tale book then his superb performance in this extraordinary adaptation of Shakespeare. When I first saw this movie he completely captured me by his performance. Later I read that he actually specialised in Shakespearean roles. In retrospective I can say it shows.
lol, well I wouldn't call it a pointless fairytale.
I just bought the book of Richard III, & on the cover it has a quote from McKellan singing it praises. Obviously his opinion is well regarded when it comes to Shakespeare.
@VersusARCH Many may say the same thing of this role or play. But I do see why this performance is better than his role as Gandalf the Grey and White. But I believe 'tis so because Lord of the Rings became a world wide phenomenon. Sir Ian McKellan was either known as Gandalf, Magneto, or the gentleman from the DaVinci Code to many of the younger audiences who do not know his full body of work.
For me, this was the best version of Richard III ever! I've never seen the play before, but I really loved this movie! Ian McKellan was so absolutely evil and impish, as much as I despised his character, I was also very amused by him. Anne agreed to marry Richard not because she really believed Richard loved her, but she had nowhere to go, and she hoped that what he said was true. Of course, she was badly disappointed in the end......
Try listening to Kenneth Branagh version here on youtube. Ian is great, although I don't really feel for this particular scene from Anne. Also, I beg to disagree with part of your comment. Well you're right she didn't have much of a choice, being royal. Though in my view, Richard has a charisma that draws people to his world. He is charismatic and sexy even being deformed. He has accepted his deformity and he uses his evil charisma and looks to attract Anne who is very vulnerable at this moment.
i love this scene i had to do it in an exam and we looked at it in great detail. Sir Ian makes it so much more special and Scott Thomas does it beautifully. 5*
Now this is simply brilliant. Usually, I deplore the modernisation of Shakespeare, but I have to say that this film is an exception. It's in a class of its own.
What a wonderfully perverse scene - to be wooed in the morgue where you dead husband lies. And of course Anne's curse of misery on the wife of the murderer comes true, when Anne herself marries him! Love the set direction/period used, too. Makes the political scheming more familiar and easier to relate to , I think. (And well, its visually incredible!)
My favorite scene from Richard 111 and superb movie interpretation. I was just telling my brother about this scene and here it is. Thank you for posting.
my god, McKellen nailed this character. I've seen people go through this entire play as Richard alway serious and bitter. But Ian gets him right to the most vicious part of him, his humor.
i think everybody did incredibly in this film, with the possible exception of bening who seemed a little overwhelmed by the material. i love that kristin scott thomas brought some strength and anger to this role; ive seen many who just play her as a throwaway grieving wife character...
This fate could have been avoided IF she had a sassy gay friend......

Possibly, Richard is like Voltaire - as he said, give me half an hour to explain away my face and I could seduce the Queen of France

Performing in this as Lady Anne in a scene study for my Advanced Drama Class. Wish me luck!
Although, my scene partner has A LOT to live up to after seeing Ian as Richard. Lol
ps- "vouchsafe to wear this ring" completely, utterly reminds me of LOTR. *nerd alert!!!*
