@operationcwaI789789 It's just common sense that engine noise, LOUD engine noise, is important part of racing. First the "silent" diesels might have been interesting and even scary, like something from future, but I think after four years of them, racing fans start to hate them.
I don't hate diesel on the road, but I hate diesel on the racing track when the rules are set up like they currently are. Making inferior technology superior, that seems to be the spirit of Le Mans...
@deggis4 The guy who developed this engine said that engine noise is just like having sex. Some prefer the loud and screaming sex, and the others prefer the quiet and moaning sex.
Also, noise is a form of energy waste. This engine uses that energy to move the mph upwards
@deggis4 Its jus not a race of you cant hear a car blast by you with its engine screaming loud while goin thru the gears. F-1 and CART wouldnt be what they are if their cars didnt scream. Nor would these Le Mans cars be awesome of each didnt have their loud exhaust notes....from the loud Porsches to the deep, throaty roar of the Corvettes and Saleens.
@deggis4 Damn right, and I'm one of them. That's what makes every car different. Do you believe any of these current LMP cars can match the legendary sound of the 787B or the 956? :D
@jh5kl There's no need to choose between fast & silent or slow & loud. If the options are fast & silent and fast & loud, I'm sure my claim is correct.
@deggis4 there might be a need to choose if electric engines arrive. thats why I said that. there has been allready a choice, diesel or petrol. I am not saying loud noise isn t nice and that people don`t care about the sound. but faster is the thing.
@jh5kl It will take a while before electric engines are truly faster, and when that time arrives it hopefully won't be a question of choice but natural selection (no more oil, combustion engine no more viable).
...unlike the case with diesel. If you believe diesel is really so dominating as it seems to be, take a closer look at the engine regulations. Despite diesel's certain advantages, it's not naturally superior on the race track. So the rule makers (ACO) made it superior. Marketing won.
@AutoslaapExpress i think it was the champion racing r8......... not too sure but the funy thing is you cant see any cars other than the r8s in front :P
In '04, the Audi UK Team Veloqx were racing. McNish was driving the #8, when somebody blew an engine and oil leaked of that car at the beginning the Porsche curves, he crashed it heavily, coasted for nearly 20 minutes with a concussion, and made it to pitlane, parked the car, the car made it back on the track 26 laps down and finished 5th. Johnny Herbert and his team in #88 battled Tom Kristensen in the #5 for the win and Kristensen won! Champion was p3.
@IgnitionUnlimited the part starting from Mulsanne corner to the Indianapolis has been probably the best part of the track (since the chicanes were installed)
@FormulaOneSpy I completely concur. It's a great challenge in Forza 3 to hit it at just the right entrance angle and velocity in preparation for braking for Indianapolis.
the r15 is faster actually mate because with a v10 they can position the engine lower and easier aloowing more room for aerodynamic streamlining... also the nose sucks up the air forcing the car onto the track rather than the point which creates a cleaner air flow, and you dont wont that because it makes it easier for people to slipstream you...
I think they should race with R10 in La Sarthe(more straights),
And with R15 in ALMS. (More corners)
Cause the handling is better in R15 then the R10, but the speed in the R10 is useful to gain valuable seconds in the long and speedy curves in La Sarthe, so it doesnt need the full agility of the R15.
Anyway, remember 2008 race? R10 was essentially a turtle against Peugeot 908. In 2009, they were almost equal in lap time speed. Just because R15 didn't win yet it doesn't mean it is worse than R10.
Audi did make other mistakes. Budgets cuts meant less testing and racing and that had a major effect.
the R15 had a fault at le mans did it not? intercoolers or something not working well enough so they had to run on reduced power to prevent over heating. even with that they managed a 3rd place finish, R15 will be the car to beat at le mans in 2010 the pug 908 is 3 years old now
actually I think they were worst in 2009 then 2008. the R10 turned on a dime; it couldn't top end worth a shit, but it handled - R15 couldn't handle - straightway speed yeah was not too bad - I think they screwed up the R15 design and that's why the R15 plus is different - also they had to change the R15 to shut ACO and Peugeot up too
Yeah if you compare it with La Sarthe on Grid then I understand you think it's too slow. But 2004 LMP1's have about the same racespeed as LMP2's of today and that is 3:36/3.39.
Fastest Lap of the race - #88 Audi Sport UK Team Veloqx - 3:34.264, so instead of making stupid remarks think and read a bit first.
You obviously have no idea what this racing is about. It's not some sprint cup series where they just go flat-out for a limited period of time. It's a 24h race.
yeah but its really boring mainly because of the horrible noise it makes, theres no getting away from the fact though that its a fantastic technical achivement
thanks to this vid i was able to hear the r8. i still like the r10 more and i still like its engine sound. i also like the zteks and creations. the zyteks before 07.
haha i remeber when they had sound, now they sound like turbo charged vaccum cleaners, but still i love these cars

tire noise + wind noise >>>> engine noise!!!!
amazing... this why they call it 'truth in engineering'

@operationcwaI789789 I can't prove this as fact, but I'd say very clear majority of racing fans prefer it loud.

That's a simplification... R15 is vastly better in every area. It also has the new engine.

its a degraded V10 IMO.
And its "Put the center of gravity lower".
