One of the great Bebop vocalists who ever lived -- and this is one of the greatest things he ever did. I've been a fan for 35 years and have met him a few times. But I have a question: why does he now look like such a physical freak? And spare me any p.c. flippant answers, please. It's not just his age either. What did he do to himself -- and why?
Mark did a great job with this piece. I absolutely love Stolen moments. So many artist have sampled this selection and have done a tremendous job with it.
Murphy kept the art alive in lean years. His albums Stolen Moments & Red Clay (a cover of Freddie Hubbards piece) both contain many masterful examples of Jazz ballads, vocalese & scatting. Murphy is the bridge between Lambert, Hendricks & Ross/Eddie Jeffersen and Kurt Elling/Dianne Reeves and others. Without him the art could have been lost. But more than that he charted new ground for others to build on. Four of my playlists feature great jazz singers/vocalists. I can't get enough.
One of the greatest recorded performances by one of the few masters of true jazz singing--not merely classic pop being performed with jazz instrumentalists. And he's still at it, and just as amazing, even today.
Does he wear a toupe? Great singer (in his day) but I always wondered if it was a rug???

To anyone who knows this song.
what is the meaning of the last phrase? Please let me understand. Is this part of a musical show?
"But we are here, I steered here it's weird here those beards dear Watch the pantomime"
What? Pantomime??

@azaminomama maybe because people wear fake beards in pantomimes? I don't know, it's weird (dear)..

I saw him sing this in concert back in the 70s in NYC at the Beacon Theater!
He also sang another one of my favorites called "On The Red Clay!"
What a treat that was!
His voice is so wonderful I've always adored listening to him sing and have always felt the songs ended too soon!
........sigh
Thanks for sharing zioroberto! You're the best!
