He might only be using one MOST of the time, but he would still have to change guitars 6 times, if not more, if it wasnt all combined into one guitar. and thats just for this song, nevermind the rest of the gig. you seem to fail to understand that its just more convenient

So he alternates the top and bottom necks, making it sound like a rhythm player changing chords from E to D and back and forth.

Steve Vai is an instrumentalist with often very experimental approach to writing and performing music. Of course there's stuff that's hard to swallow (personally, I hate that track from Passion&Warfare with the kid's voice), but his technical skill makes even the worst of his stuff interesting at some level, for theoretical analysis if nothing else. I agree that he is very exploited in the music world, but he isn't overrated because he can play anything. It's that simple.
