Can you make good money in this field? I am about to be a 2nd semester freshman soon and I was thinking about switching into Computer and Information Technology with a focus on CIS. I know managers make a lot of money but what if you're not a manager? Are you stuck making 35,000 a year? or can you make 80+ regardless?
man this job suckks, i cant believe im studying this career, i dont wanna waste my life explaining stupid dumb ass whores secretaries how to use the keyboard
my cousin started out with a job for a drug company as an IT and his beginning salary was 35,000 a year right out of college. But in one year they doubled his salary to 70,000 and it is now 5 years later he is making 157,000 a year and has currently been home doing nothing for 2 and half weeks now because they don't need him at this moment but is still getting paid. I'm pretty sure i can say that he has the luckiest job in the world...
And with any job, you have to know people and have connections. If you're going to send a resume online along with thousands of other people , then its a much more difficult process.
The problem with networking imo is that you have to go through certifications. For job requirements, ALONG with a bachelors degree, companies look for certs like CCNA, MCSE etc. Finding a job in network administration isn't that hard. I got some interviews out of college from small businesses for NA, but they just didn't pay that much. Plus I didn't feel like studying for a cert every 3years or so which some require. CAREFULLY research the certification and its worth before you invest time in it
My STARTING salaryis 46,000. Granted, this is with less than 1 year of experience. If you are computer science, I think you start at 50,000. Computer engineers/other engineer 55,000 - 60,000 depending on the company. So its not a bad starting salary. In 5 years when I finish my masters, I am expecting to make 90,000k per year.
There are TWO routes you can goto in IS. Either programming or networking and from there you can work your way to being a manager. Msg me if u have any questions.
what do you think is better. Computer Hardware engineering or computer systems analyst? I am more into the main hands on with a computer and I really dont mind the salary although a little bit ^.^
Computer Engineering is more difficult and a niche field in my opinion. Systems management is managing IT hardware/software where as CE is designing/programming hardware/chips. It all depends on what you wanna do man. I'm a data management analyst . Its not the most perfect job, but on the bright side, I get to work with a bunch of cute nurses :>
@rdxxxx hello, im currently at the university of houston and just finished basics after being a music major for about a year. i want to get into IT im confused as to where to go from there, i thought about getting a help desk job to gain some experience but a little confused about what education i should be getting as far as a degree is concerned. how did you start?
My first IT job was a web administrator at my school. I then quickly did freelancing for about 3 months, didn't like it. With the recession, I was actually out of work for like 2 months. Then I got two job offers, one for system administration/programming. The other in data management which is what I chose because it paid better. (26$/hr to 18 lolz). I don't think help-desk will really get you anywhere. Networking pays well, so does database admin, and software development.
@rdxxxx currently an undecided sophomore in the business college at my university. i have no idea how to program computers and the only prior experience to any language was my high school q basic class. computers have always interested me though and i think could be good at it. should i just say fuck it and go into marketing or an operations management type thing or am i going to be starting from the ground up with this major?
IDK this seems like a bum deal, while professionals in other fields become more knowledgeable with experience, this seems like a field where lots of experience would work against you, as you would be most experienced in obsolete technologies.
What exactly do they mean by "constantly learning?" As in, you're spending money/effort in attaining new certification every year/couple of years?
I'm an information systems student at the hospital, I 'm doing this for my co-op work term, and its amazing, definitely a good job. I wouldn't make a career out of it as it does not have specialized training, its all over the place, from programming to troubleshooting, to hardware. Be prepared to be learning new things 24/7 and also be prepared for frustration and stress. I'd recommend this career for those challenge seekers, but not for those who want specified higher knowledge.
@mik3ayala18 how did it turn out for you? im starting on the 22nd. im thinking it will get me ready for programming classes, cause i haven't programmed at all really and starting from zero. i've gone into soe code to change things here and there, but its just trial and error and i never really knew what i was doing lol
I'm majoring in computer information systems. Is this a type of job I would be getting into, because i've heard CIS major has lots of choices in careers.
Why is there such a large amount of people that knock it when its always considered a top career by so many occupational sites that research the statistics about these jobs?
@b0ondockz Yeah you pose an excellent question, which I wonder myself. I'm not in the industry, but one reason could be the disconnect between media with no first hand experience in the matter and IT veterans who actually have first hand knowledge. Your other posts are spot on too, the forums on Dice are absolutely depressing to read when it comes to IT.
If you have found any sort of enlightenment in regards to this within the last year, feel free to share.
Are the people that knock it just disgruntled help desk employees with no
college degree while the happy people are the ones with a college education holding the high tech positions making
lots of money or is this just a real crappy industry to work in that only appeals to a select few of people? Id love to hear from real professionals. Is this an exciting area? Is it really boring? Continued->
When I look for jobs online there seem to be alot, with good pay. When I research the best jobs, the highest paying, the most in demand, IT is always on top. Many people say that IT is boring, that it is a waste of time to study, and that it is a dead end. It seems to me that MOST people who claim to be in the field totally knock it while a small amount actually consider it a great career. Continued->
Maybe somebody can help me. Ive been considering a career in IT but I am reading alot of mixed opinions about the
field. Some people say that the industry is dying in the US and that everything is being outsourced while others say that there are plenty of opportunities in the field. Some say that everything can be outsourced and others say that there are certain "hands on" type of jobs that could never be outsourced which makes sense to me. Continued->

Great video! The video shows that it's not just the technical side of the job that's important, but also the "soft skills" part also...

I'm currently in school for CIS and have to decide on a concentration soon. Any ideas?
Web design sounds like fun, but I like all aspects of computers and really can't decide.
