Those Paddlefish or other known as Spoonbill, are actually really good, you can catch them in alot of major rivers as in the Missippi, and even catch them in Eastern Montana. Its kind of rare to actually catch them on bait and a hook too. They usually fish for them with one giant hook and usually you just snag them.

Some fishermen use treble hooks and snag em. There's a lot of ways to get them on the hook. It sounds elitist to suggest that this isn't fishing just because it's not your kind of fishing. They understand their fish and don't over-fish endangered fish so let it be.

if a game warden catches you with one you will get a big ass fine. i caught a smaller one in henderson and i had no idea what it was so i flagged down a warden and told me what it was. they are endangered.

Actually in the past two years in Louisiana they have changed the law. They are off the endangered list now. Also you can keep up to two per person.... but it must be caught with bait in the mouth like this one was (which is very rare) to be able to keep them. Plus they must fall in a certain size slot.

Actually.... you don't want to use the bigger bottles. Think about it. That was a 30 LBS spoonbill and it was caught on a 20 oz bottle. How much bigger do you plan to catch? The fact of the matter is.... the smaller bottles are used because they will pull up any fish no matter how big. (see our video "girl sliced up by monster fish"). But the main thing is they work like the drag on a reel only pulling hard enough to wear the fish down but not break the line.

Spoonbill are filter feeders and eat plankton, it was a lucky catch on a Jug! Get in enough time on the water and there will always be something amazing that happens. That is the great thing about fishing.

to hetticher: its almost impossible to purposly catch a spoonbill, cause they eat plankton and just slowly swim through the water with their mouths open... i accidently caught a 3ft one in the ohio while fishing for blue gill with a worm and bobber... it used to be a big thing to snag them durring spawning season and their eggs were sold as caviar, but people killed them off to near extinction and it became illegal (i think every where)... not like that stops some people..
