  • The birth of the cowbell....

  • where it all comes from. this cat is class

  • Steve Jordan's grandad? :O

  • This had me giggling by the end. Great stuff.

  • More power than Bonham? i doubt it. But denying this man's skills is blasphemy.

  • cannot go wrong with purdie

  • 쌍,,이정도는 되야지...다들 동영상 내려|||

  • underrated? lol

  • Mangini is great-But a whole different drummer than Bernard!

  • Bernard Endorses/Plays Lento Percussion's:

Triplet Drum Gloves and Super Sticks Drum Sticks

  • @Jimmiedrums1 .....They look like a great invention!! I believe half of all drummers grip their sticks much too tight.

  • look at the kid in the grey t shirt at 1.09 his face totally loves that 4+ beat, funny as..

  • 2:15 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I love that we can hear him muttering to himself as he lays down these mondo-sexy beats.

  • man every time i get caught out in the super technical aspect of drumming i come nd watch videos of purdie, gadd, porcaro, etc. and it reminds me that drumming is all about the POCKET.

  • he reminds me of bb king.

  • He is just amazing!

  • this guy is 72 years old and nothing short of awesome.

  • @flymarvin ...Why Not???!!! John Bonham couldn't wait to see Bernard Purdie when he first went to the USA, because he was, and is, a giant drummer.

  • @violinbloke What`s that got to do with their comparison>? Small minds think alike.

  • @violinbloke yeah easy with the bonham comparison....but i love Bernard!

  • @flymarvin John loved bernard.... and had the manhood to know a good grove when he heard one

  • @flymarvin you are an idiot

  • @flymarvin oh fuck john bonham

  • @flymarvin are you serious??? John Bonham is the one who shouldn't be compared to Bernard Purdie... Puride is the most recorded drummer of all time, the inventor of countless grooves, the purdie shuffle alone has changed the world of drumming more than anything any drummer ever did outside of rudiments, so many grooves are derivatives of that shuffle that one cant begin to count... Respect to Bonham but JACKOFFS like you should not be commenting on videos of the legendary Bernard Purdie...

  • @flymarvin obviously you have no idea who Bernard Purdie is and how much he has contributed to the drumming world.

  • @flymarvin john bonham took most of influence from purdie. so most of what you listen to in john bonham is bernard purdie based.

  • @flymarvin I am a HUGE Led Zeppelin fan... but you are a complete idiot, I am not sure if you realized, but one of John Bonhams most popular tracks (Fool in the Rain) originated from this man...

  • The real Champ, still rocking steady.

  • amazing phrasing

  • The china is way too overpowering. But this is so good, I love all subtleties on the snare.

  • i met this man at a small "day of percussion" event years ago. i had no idea how fortunate i was at the time. the only thing that i didn't really appreciate was that he charged for autographs

  • Give that hihat some air. Hihats love air!

  • I've got the weirdest boner...

  • FEELIN IT NO DOUBT

  • Brilliant! The man is a living legend. and I love how he ends the clip with the old "Shave and a haircut..." motif. Only old farts like me will know what I mean by that! :o)

  • this man sure loves that chinese cymbal!

  • One and All! Do NOT forget: Bernard Purdie is the Creator and Master of the Funk drumming genre. I dare say, that without the likes of Bernard, Clyde Stubblefield and Jabo Starks there would be no James Brown as we know him. These are the guys that iginited the flame that powered the roadster that would carry the heart and soul of Soul Music right into modern day!! Groove On !!

  • now i want to throw my mpc and burn cubase ! i need a real music , carla thomas , eddie grant , telma houston , james...............vickie sue robinson..........

  • Bernard Purdie is a monster. No one grooves like him.

  • what a cool cat

  • how did i not know about this guy earlier

  • Bigg like from CAK NORIS.... 22 man willl be kill

  • fucking boss

  • Damn, this dude's playing is fucking tight!

  • RESPECT ....

  • I don't think I've ever seen him play the same thing twice

  • Yes, so in the pocket that he makes you feel like dancing just to drums.

    Rare!

  • My goodness.

  • That's interesting, he keeps the ride on his left... Hmmmm.

  • GET DOWN WIT THE GET DOWN......Isn't it just so PURDIE!!!

  • purdie should be everyone's hero cause he's been doing something with so much soul and enjoyment for his WHOLE LIFE! one of my all time heroes. :-)

  • brilliant!

  • I love his AA China cymbal. It's how the china's were first used in western music; as accent cymbals for jazz and blues. I haven't seen any other chinas like this one. Anyone know of a China that could give the same jazzy, bluesy feel?

  • this guy feels it

  • This makes my spine tingle and the hairs on my arms stand on end

  • Old school R&B groove, from the master.

  • He seems to show his drums who's the boss. I like that.

  • i wish i could do ghost notes that sexy :'(

  • I'm working right now.But i cant stop watching this.My boss walking behind me and complain about why i'm not working. So I let him watching this with me.He smile and walk away.Sorry about bad english but I really happy right now Just wanna express my self. AHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @theycallmephatphux .....YEAHHHH!!!!! Spread the Purdie Joy!! For some Bonham joy (audio only) try 'John Bonham drum out takes- Fool in the rain'.

  • @violinbloke Well I love Bonham too.and that Bonham drum outtake is amazing I can listen to drums only track all day and never gets tired.

  • @violinbloke bonham was good, but purdie was the truth when it came to shuffles.

  • @theycallmephatphux haha same too just cant stop watchin! this rules!

  • Epicness.

  • Sheesh...da MAN!

  • just because he used a cowbell doesn't mean it's a latin feel...

  • this guy is a great drummer, can easily compete with justin bieber

  • very technical

  • hello, my name is bernard purdie, and I am groove personified.

  • He killed this just like he did on Aretha Franklin's "Rock Steady". A Groove machine!

  • 21 people with no soul have watched this so far. They're not so much drummers as drum owners, but they'll never figure that out.

  • Not that technical but so in the fucking pocket,Awesome player.

  • @cast390 ....Van Gogh: Not very technical blah blah blah.

  • @cast390 not that technical??? this is guy is the most precise player of all time.

  • @cast390 Absolutely right, and that is what some people don't get about Purdie. If you judge drummers purely on their technical prowess, he isn't the best. But for downright in the pocket, groove-from-the heart drumming, he is unparalleled in my opinion.

  • @Parrock1 : )

  • @cast390 "Not very technical?" This man invented shuffle...

  • cant help but smile when hear ole purdy. Now im gonna play my drums!

  • More China!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @youngmontana1000 ^Can't tell if trolling or just very stupid.

  • @youngmontana1000 If you'll be wise and lucky enough to grow old at least 40, then you'll regret your comment

  • he´s the world´s most recorded drummer.

  • MASSIVE, MASSIVE INFLUENCE ON MY CAREER.

    THE SWING KING.

    BOW TO THE PRETTY PURDY.

  • needs more cowbell... :-DDD

  • @kuhal777 This may be the funniest (and truest) comment I've seen on youtube. I second your motion, sir.

  • You want the best drum personality with more grooves than the planets in all of the Solar Systems combined??? Well, we are most defiantly talking and hearing the master himself, the one and only Bernard Purdie. Long live the King of groove.....

  • for the love of god please stop hitting that china...

  • @Spenserforwood - lol. I know what you mean. But Pretty Purdie is still amongst my favourite drummers. His feel is sublime.

  • i like how the cowbell sounded great !

  • As a bassist, I have to give this man his props. He is a master of space, timing, phrasing, and groove; and somebody whose tracks I am constantly giving to my students.

  • I really wish I could get this video. Bernard has 3 VHS tapes on his website and it says to email to order. I've sent a dozen emails over the last 4 years or so with no response.

  • This must be one of the videos with the best like/dislike rate

  • Master!!!

  • Bernard Purdie built, owned, and burned down the groove workshop on that solo. My god I wish I could play like that.

  • You can't lose when you add in cowbell

  • Bloody hell this guy is good. What feeling!

  • This old guy is one of the best natural groovers I have seen on here. Is he still around and playing live!?. Hes sooooo sooooo cool as well when hes talking whilst playing in his other clips man this old guy is simply fantastic and I love him!

  • @WIGANDRUMMER2010 I believe he's still out there. Back in 2009 he played the broadway revival of Hair. Long live the most recorded drummer of all time, Bernard Purdie!

  • @DSCRAPRE

Here here I will second that but im telling ya man I bet this dudes grand kids just love staying over at his house to hear bed time stories read by him lol he just has that look and feel about him to keep you captivated for ages and ages whilst he tells you a story haha. And his dumming is second to none. lol would love to hear him read little red riding hood or 3bears whilst playing his ghost note shuffle hahaha

  • @WIGANDRUMMER2010 True that. He just exudes warmth.

  • @DSCRAPRE

Yes and the big bad wolf was knocking on the door shouting let me in little piggies or I will huf and I will puff and I will ooooow just a min hang on I got some AIR IN MA HI HATS!!! toosh tooosh and I am liking that say what little piggies said the big old bad wolf you no I aint so bad really when I got AIR in ma hi hats what say you bring on out your intsuments and we can jam and groove and make things alright!!!!!!!!!!!! haha can just imagine Bernard Purdie telling that story

  • that makes me chub..

  • Great feel, nice independence and incredible work on the ghost notes with the left hand. Wow, just wow.

  • that was fine

  • over 4000 records recorded! the most recorded drummer in history oIo fuck off travis baker & jordy jordyson!

  • best natural drumming I have ever heard, just flows right out of him, best that ever lived, no debate whatsoever

  • @Tsully ........funny............you said Mike Mangini was the best drummer ever too............keeping stories straight seems to be a challenge for you................Bernard's a great drummer.....but the best that ever lived..........not so much.

  • That beat is cornfed with a side of collard greens.

  • @jesusshank: Mike Portnoy does exactly the same

  • @jesusshank .....BUT, without the feel. I'd say MP was the Frank Zappa of the drums. I loved Frank, but he couldn't really groove either.

  • @violinbloke Ever heard the album Hot Rats? I'd cite that as an argument against that statement.

  • @sneekman ....Of course I know Hot Rats, but my point about Zappa was that in a long career of exceptional stuff, all that stands out now is a lot of scribbly twiddly un-groovacious tosh, with the odd decent thing thrown in. The same with Carl Palmer.........when he tried to groove he failed dismally.

For serious, simple, groove, give me 'So Tired of Being Alone' by Al Green for instance.

  • @violinbloke I suppose in the case of groove, that would be correct. Frank Zappa was known for many things, groove not being really "up there" on that list, so to speak.

  • @SuperPbizzle yes!!!!!!!

  • @SuperPbizzle I hope your kidding. I almost gave you a thumbs up cuz i thought it was a funny joke lol. It looks like some people here took you seriously....

  • @SuperPbizzle Purdie kicks MPs arse all day

  • @haggis2112 : Thanks for your opinion. I happen to like both. I was merely bringing up that they hold the sticks the same way!

  • Man I got to give it up to Bernie for the groove thing. Even though when we met I wanted to smack him for being a total wise ass but we aint perfect . Great job big man. Peace

  • This is a great Drummer!!!

  • why does he play with the butt end on the snare? just his preference?

  • Oh man...that was sweet. A good groove is just more fun to listen to then some guys 64th notes on double bass. This is what it's all about.

  • it was good, but i could use a little bit more of that cowbell..

  • @aleksandersucharski I know what you mean. Just some more cowbell.. that's the stuff

  • has he recorded with any rappers? Live not sequenced?

  • @44eelz hes pretty old scool so i doubt it. who knows tho.

  • The Youtube videos of good drummers always have the funniest damn comments!! @kuhal777 and @kaseyolson : lmFAO... and I mean it.

  • this is Purdielicious Grooving Baby hell yeah =)

  • Ah - this just proves why this man is such a god of the drums... beauttiful clip. From 2:15 or so its just sublime.

  • his groove kills any drummer on the planet

  • Ouch.

  • the man.. that is all.

  • this guy is LEGENDARY

i'm trying the cowbell part for years and still i can't figure it out....

  • this guy is LEGENDARY

  • If he were any deeper in the pocket, he'd punch a hole right through the space-time continuum. I'd need a flux capacitor to groove this hard.

  • If he were any deeper in the pocket, he'd punch a hole right through it.

  • screw technique. he has the GROOVE. and that is all you need.

  • :,-( it just so beautiful =| *sniff*

  • He's clearly having sex with that Snare.

  • Lost my shit at 1:35

  • THIS IS MUSIC..

a really musician should do things like that.

i mind, i was in haven for 2:56 minutes. this is what music should do.

  • he murding using straight paradiddles lol dang yo!!!

  • like he's not dope enough... china ride? the mans a monster. true artist.

  • The cowbell groovin makes my armhairs stand up. Just plain kickin it.

  • I look up at him!!!!!!!!! GREAT!!

  • GROOVE WORKSHOP!

  • บัก อ้วน มึง กาก มาก ชอบๆ ไอ่ ห่า หมาอ้วน

  • @FaTherYouDie1995 Love the Thai script. Ashamed... I should know what it says...lived there 3 years. What did you say? The Purdie shuffle was used by John Bonhami Led Zeppelin...but great to hear the originator.

  • It's just so musical.

  • Latin Feel kills!

  • @ronjuniorwatson The cow bell part is the same groove as the beginning! Not necessarily latin just because he uses a cowbell.

  • @drumsticknow Yes because some whiny youtuber would no more about drums than Bernard Purdie

  • GOTdammit. Goosebumps it's so groovin

  • MOSTROOOOO IDOLOOO

  • So smooooooth.

  • Bernard honestly changed the way I look at playing drums.

  • Awesome! My favourite drummer.

  • Compare this to Mike Portnoy.....I'd rather listen to this all day!!

  • @DCussen You can't compare man, both unbelievable drummers...just different styles is all!:)

  • his independence is sick

  • Simply amazing!

  • This should be required viewing for anyone buying a kit or taking a lesson.

  • 21 people are infact drum machines in human form

  • Comment removed

  • I listen to this at least once a day - no joke.
