  • Palmtree Panic (JP) is the best starting level Sonic music for any Sonic game. It was awesome and upbeat!

  • Yep, the Japanese version is better.

  • I'm glad that steam uses the japanese tracks for their copy of Sonic CD. I never knew how bland the US versions are.

  • I liked the American versions better. Maybe cause that's what I'm used to, but I doubt it.

  • bullshit us good future sounds like a different future!

  • havent read all the comments but i gotta say i like the american version better not cause im american cause im really not

  • The place where the Japanese version really wins is the good future tracks, the others are fairly even I think

  • The Japanese version is hands-down better all around. They should never have changed it!

  • I grew up playing the US version so for me I can't really go against it. There are some songs however that I have different opinions on such as Palmtree Panic, the JP version is soooo much better than the US one, Metallic Madness I gotta give it up to the US one though. But also I thought that the US soundtrack gave the game a more darker and sinister feeling one that the JP version lacked, the latter being more poppier and upbeat. I like both, but I lean more to the one I grew up with ^^

  • i really hate how most people made a contest out of the two region themes. its annyoing the people who made the songs werent having a compiton they were just giving their country a song it isnt a comption we all have diffrent opions

  • The American soundtrack beats the Japanese soundtrack any day especially Palmtree Panic and Statdust Speedway Japanese soundtrack is just annoying with screaming

  • @SpyroPS1iscool

    Lol.

  • @MrLzarvo What's so funny it's true American is better I suits the game more I love it

  • @SpyroPS1iscool

Dude, its cool, if you love it, I love it ^_____^

  • JP soundtrack is what makes Sonic CD so fun

  • @Dextaaa

    True.

  • they were trying i believe to bomb this game in america

  • It's available for iPhone and iPod touch users! Jap and American soundtracks!

  • im definitely getting sonic cd off of psn considering it has both soundtracks and tails as a playable character.

    worth the 5 bucks.

  • japanese is so fun

  • the american version is more fitting hands down the jap is just fast pace music which doesnt fit imo not saying its bad the jap soundtrack is ok

  • Comment removed

  • i love America but the Japanese version is so BADASS

  • The American version has NOTHING on the Japanese version. Just listen to Collision Chaos!

  • American sucks so hard and is just boring, oh and JP version has steel drums so there it kicks ass nuff said.

  • Sorry guys, the American just doesn't sound like Sonic. It's good, and I adore Sonic Boom, but Sonic IS about excitement and often joyful speed, and things like the Japanese Palm Tree Panic Future really deliver that a lot better than the subdued American variant, or the somewhat generic tropical theme for the Present.

Still, I like 'em both, just the Japanese music is way past cool!

  • Well good news Sonic CD fans. Sonic CD comes out tomorrow on XBL and not only does it let you play as Tails after you beat the game. An option not included in the original and only 400 points ($4.99) The best part of all is that it lets you switch between the American and Japanese soundtrack. Now that is freakin awesome and makes it worth buying for that alone.

  • Japanese music hands down

  • @zelos18

Agreed, everything time I here a US soundtrack I just want to put ear plugs in my ears.

  • What a great anaysis: "it sounds more better and fast" xP

  • japanese version FTW

  • Preferred the JP tracks for present and bad future. Preferred US for good future. JP was a little too YAAAY GOOD FUTURE YOU SAVED EVERYTHING :3 and the US one was more sort of relaxed and serene.

This is coming from pretty much an anti-weeaboo mind you, so no bias. For the most part the JP tracks are just more... Sonic.

  • The japanese bad future music is like a perfect contrast to good future.

Seriously, everything is fucked up. Win.

  • Glad Generations added the Jap version of Palmtree Panic, the American is ok, but the Jap verison is off the charts awesome

  • Japan is alright... but it all sounds the same to me :/

  • 5:51 Congratulations! you just won a new CAR!

  • To bad Sonic Generations didn't put the American BGM Palm Tree Zone song in the game they put that MIDI Japanese version. Meh sound, doesn't utilize the CD potential as the American BGM did for Sonic CD.

  • It's 2011 and we're still doing this shit?! lol

But honestly, the American version sounds better to me.

  • the sonic 1 style songs fit more slower paced games. If you listen to Ace Attorney on the Nintendo DS you will find some Labyrinth Zone music copied 1:1 and rearanged (Steel Samurai quest). In Sonic 4 they thankfully made the right decision in keeping the japanese funky sounds and trashing localization as they should have done in Sonic CD

  • to me sonic musics greatest shine is Sonic 2 Chemical Plant Zone so I would choose the Jap/Euro version over the american any time. It seems the American version leaned more to Marble Zone like music which doesn't reflect the color explosion and speeds of the Sonic CD version.

  • The Japanese version of Palmtree Panic Act 1 present reminds me of music from the Mario games, only faster.

  • the future Japanese theme I dont think fits the level mood at all. Have no opinion of the rest.

  • the revamped intro is better than the old one.

  • what is the music before the comparison.

  • i think its cool how both versions have a different sound track

also this game is coming to psn and xbox live in a few months and i heard everyone will get the japanese music

  • Japan wins...hands down...

  • Idk about the present, its a bit of a toss-up, but the future one, i mean wtf, all 3 japanese ones sound practically the same. The Na ones have depth, the bad future has a sort of hymn and is very menacing when put alongside the catastrophic future brought forth by robotnik. The good one has a sort of nirvana paradise feel as well, but the jap versions are just like YAY, HAPPY HAPPY PANDA FUN TIME WITH LEMON DROP ICE CREAM CUPCAKE>

  • @XTipherionX You hit it PERFECT.

  • I liked the American version of the first level best, until I heard the bloody sax part in the Japanese version! OH MY GOD! THIS IS IS SOOOOO AAAAWWESSSOOM!! :')

  • America goes for the Atmosphere of the level while Japan goes for music that really sets you up. As for what country I prefer, I like both. There are some in the American one that I prefer over the Japanese and vice-versa.

  • Abcdefd

  • The American Palmtree Panic makes me want to shake and shimmy to the music XD

  • Let me say something: I really LOVE the american sowndtrack. The japanese version seems too "noisy" to me... But, it's just my opinion.

  • I think the Japanese Soundtrack is better overall, but the main theme of the US soundtrack (Sonic Boom) is better than the Japanese equivalent imo,

  • Until I saw this I never knew the American soundtrack was different to the PAL version....

    Wow.

I feel bad for the people State side.

  • @jazzbox24 Dont worry, I was only 3 when this game came out.

  • Sorry, I grew up with the American soundtrack on my Sega CD and PC version. I like it better.

  • JAP/EUR version if the good future is more cheery

  • i love both <3

  • Comment removed

  • If you guys haven't noticed, the progression of the past music is reflected all throughout the japanese soundtrack

  • @MythObject i pray that most prople have lol

  • @tayo1115 I feel that if the american soundtrack had done the same way but in some way dynamically made it different, it would've been awesome to hear. I mean, the American soundtrack is good, but I really enjoyed the Japanese more.

  • this makes me wonder if the past soundtracks were the only compinsation for there being any jap/euro music there or if the american soundtrack was just rushed so there are no different sounding past tracks.

  • the japanese tracks are also the european ones as well

  • @figaro589 I wondered why I remembered the Japanese music more, thanks.

  • how are you suposed to get a good future anyway

  • @stormydatalot you destroy some machine in the past

  • in the american version first level i had to bust out the maracas but in the japarese one i was head bobbin like a crazy person :D!

  • WHOA??!?!? I was completely blown away when I heard the japanese version O.o

It is soooooooo amazing and way better I'm sorry but that's my opinion, even if it's my first time hearing it japanese soundtrack FTW!!!

  • Why did they change both soundtracks? Why couldnt they just have one.

  • I used to hate the American soundtrack, but they're really not comparable to each other. They're completely different imo. In terms of which soundtrack fits the game better, I'd have to go with the American one.

  • Such a good fucking game... :)

  • And while this should've been on the other comment instead of double commenting, I must say the Japanese soundtrack is too ravey and XTC 4 LYFFFF for its own good, the American was always a little too laid back and slow, but the American is more fitting of a Sonic game than the Japanese ever was or will be. Someone said the American sounds like a garage band, only you wish that was the case. If garage bands played 80's rock and world music, maybe.

  • The American soundtrack is less intrusive.

  • WOW, the japones future is better xD

  • When you say Japanese version you also mean the PAL version, right? I owned the PAL and it had the exact same music. Infact, until I saw this video, I never knew the American versions music was any different. :s

  • I personally think the soundtracks kind of match up as not one being particualrly better than the other. They've both got some "duds" and they both have some winners. For me, Japanese seems to have done better on Good Futures, but American seems to be pretty good with Bad Future and Present songs. But neither one is perfect for the time they do well on...

  • I remember the review of EGM saying that, although the JP and the US versions are the same, the JAP version won a higher score just because of the soundtrack...

  • For some odd reason, the US version of Palmtree Panic sounds like Salsa music.

  • For Palmtree Panic and Stardust Speedway, I like the US version better, but the JP version wins everywhere else.

  • I always preferred the Japanese soundtrack, it always seemed a lot more interesting.

Now for random question. What the heck was that music during 0:13 ??

  • @Drainage64 Twilight Princess soundtrack- Malo Mart 5-38

  • Although the American version really tries to get into the jungle-tree-tropical feeling, the JAP versions are way much better. And i first played the US version... many years ago... but copule of years ago, when i played the JAP version.. i had tears in my eyes when, playing the JAP version i heard the soundtrack. The JAP music IS absolutely AWESOME!!!!

  • The USA and the JAPAN Sonic cd are tied for there are a few lame ones on both side. For example the PalmTree Panic JAPAN is mostly the winner cause it has a wonderful feeling into it cept the bad future one for it has a dark feeling. And the USA was close of winning :)

  • Meh, I have to say I really prefer the American version in all of them. it sounds more tropical and I just thought it was really soothing, while the Japanese version is just like "ITS SONIC ITS CRAAAZY FAST TOOT TOOT" which was okay in its own way but it didn't appeal too much to me.

I think in general the US version had better music, but the Japanese did win a few (Like Collision Chaos future.) mostly because the US version had more video game-y music while the Japanese just had music.

  • I like the japanese music better, even though i have the american version lol

  • The American version of the Good Future sounds more llke a jungle-esque level.

  • The same Japanese track was also used for the first early Sonic Adventure prototype video trailer.

  • I am not Japanese and I am neither an American nor a European. It doesn't get as neutral as that and I have to say there is no comparison, the Japanese version and on all the songs is simply better on every possible way. You can tell that they are talented while the US side sounds more like your average teen garage band.

  • This is really subjective.

  • jpn wins present, us wins bad future, jpn wins good future but its still a lttle to fast,it doesnt completly match up with the pace of the game

  • it's ok

  • I prefer the American version in my opinion it fits the game way better with the exception of the final boss music the japanese one is the best hands down.

  • The American fits the game much better, but I prefer the European & Japanese music.

  • both awsome imo, sonic cd has the best music of any sonic game anyhow, us or jp, the soundtrack kicks ass.

  • Sonic.. and smooth music? Sorry but I got the impression that he's a fast critter..

    Japanese version wins hands down

  • The only song from the Japanese version which agrees well with the Palmtree Panic Bad Future

  • Why change the sound track again SEGA?

    =_=

There is something wrong with them?

  • @foxxthefox

Just like with video game box arts and names *ex. older RockMan box arts, Puckman = Pacman*, just like with names of cars *ex. Nissan Fairlady Z [JP] = Nissan 300ZX [US]*, etc.

In America, they change stuff so it has a better 'appeal' to the buyers. Apparently, in the 80's and 90's, they failed so bad. I don't know if it was a contract or something and it HAD to be done, since it's so wide spread, but man it' was terrible.

  • Wooo? Yeah? What the fuck?

  • .....yeah but thats the reason why I like the american version better. it sounds really peaceful and goes a lot better with the background. the japanese version would sound better if it was like some kind of party level or something. US all the way

  • US version sounds boring and rubbish not Sonic's style at all. Also the Japanese version has more continuity between the different times and all the songs feel linked.

  • i dont see how it sounds boring. it may not fit well with sonic but to me the US soundtrack is amazing. and stands out with techno.electro feel. kinda like how sonic adventure had a jazz theme in most tracks

  • Wow, I really wanted to hate the JP version's music, but it.. it's pretty okay!

Ideally it''d be great if you could switch soundtracks in the settings, because there's gonna be days when I would want to hear the great american versions, and days when I would want the other.

  • I think the first song comparison, they were both good but the JAP wins the rest imo. Very nice msuic. Can't believe i've never heard them before.

  • Sorry but the Japanese one sounds like elevator and/or holding music to me. In fact I'm reminded of Play Online's patching music.

  • I agree with previous comments, the American one went with atmosphere, so I think American wins.

The Japanese one sounds good, but to be honest, its like a mess of instruments and sounds.

The US present one has a fresh, happy sound which fits.

The US bad future is perfect as it carries the present's theme but is quite barren and quiet, which fits with the background's grey polluted environment.

The US good future is calm and relaxing, but still carrying a future musical idea

    My oppionion :)

  • US version is better

  • I actually agree with Megaman765.

  • US version is better...no doubt

  • Agree.

  • I am from America, but I like the Japanese soundtrack better. To me all the NA music is slow, where the JP track really speeds the pace up.

  • @thedragoonknight True, but some of the music seems a bit unfitting. Palmtree Panic sounds too much like a festival of some sort, while the US Palmtree Panic sounds like a tropical area. Not that I hate the JP version's music, it's just that the US is a bit more peaceful.

  • @thedragoonknight That would mean the American tracks fit better. Because Sonic cd is fucking horribly slow. I hate the game infact. Exploration and slow down? This is why sonic sucks today because we have to much of that crap.

  • @Clesarie The music makes the game, and I dont feel as slugged down when playing.

  • @Clesarie so what, would you rather have 'hold right to win' style sonic? slow platforming is better than simply speeding through the whole level by holding right. THAT'S what's wrong with Sonic today

  • @Pander8874 get fucking real. Fast paces gaming is what made sonic. Run right is on the best sonic games 1 2 3 and knuckles. Shit platforming should sta in Mario.

  • @Clesarie but Sonic 1 in particular is all about slow paced platforming. you clearly haven't played it

  • @Clesarie Mario and Sonic are both good platformers! Why does it always have to be one or the other with these things?

  • @Digitalsp33r Its not one or the other. You can like both. I however don't I think mario games suck expect super mario world.

  • ambas musicas son buenas, pero me quedo con la japonesa

  • They both did a good job who cares

  • Well, this could go on for quite some time, but UNLIKE YOU LOLZ I've better things to be doing.

  • i grew up with the jap version so i like it better.

  • You're opinion is pure fail, SonicCD is one of the greatest platform games of all time.

    Retard.

  • Hold on, you type "You're opinion" and I'm the retard?

    Retard.

  • lol emo people these days....

  • the Japanese version is great compared to the US it doesnt' have pep in it like the Japanese version including for both Present and Future

  • I mean the Japanese music is cool in it's own way but the US music just fits the atmosphere better.

  • The Japanese music is WAAAAAAAAAY to happy for me. The US version fits the game better in my opinion

  • Here's how I see it:

    American Music: went for atmospheric

    Japanese version: Fun and bouncy

Depending on your personal preferences there will alwas be someone who likes one over the other. I grew up with the american version, so that made me rather biased to it. There's only one or two soundtracks I can agree the japanese version is more interesting, but for the most part I felt like the american version gave the game a darker and more mature tone than the japanese version which I appreciate.

  • slow music for a fast game = fail.

    japanese is far superior

  • i agree, but the U.S. soundtrack was still ok

  • The JAP track is what was made for this game, but the US track was put in late in development. The US tracks couldn't be implemented properly so the JAP past themes had to stay in, which ruins the NTSC version's consistancy. Some songs (like Palmtree Panic Present, Stardust Speedway, either Quartz Quadrant Futures, special stages) are better in the NTSC version than the JAP version, but inconsistancy makes the NTSC version less favorable.

  • i grew up with the american tracks, so the japanese ones are just weird to me. plus i love the palm tree music

  • i prefer the americian version...for both present and future...since its the music for the bad future americian version shows it sinc its destroyed...the japanese version doesnt it may sound better to you but it doesn't fit the theme in my opinion :\ but to each their own

  • The american soundtrack isn't as poppy, it seems to fit the atmosphere of the levels better. As stand alone singles, the japanese is better because it grabs attention. But in the actual game itself, the American version wins by far in my opinion

  • @OrbGoblin Not to mention the sheer quality of the tracks got to show the musical capabilities of the Sega CD. :D

  • @OrbGoblin

    I don't think so xD

I think this music relly puts you in the game.

  • @OrbGoblin Amen.

  • @OrbGoblin

I must say I agree. The NA version may be a little slower, but less busy-sounding. Don't get me wrong, I love the japanese version as well, and I could be a little biased, having grown up with the NA version, but I don't see why everyone needs to be black and white about this; both are amazing, and it's a shame that I haven't heard any memorable tracks from recent video games in a long time. Sonic CD easily makes it into my top favorite vg sound tracks.

  • the japense version was mor fitting for sonic. but the american version was raw, sometimes gritty. nothing about the song says sonic. but that doesnt mean i dont like it better. i loved the american version

  • The American version actually fit the game's atmosphere better. Especially when you consider stuff like Sonic having to save his girlfriend as well as the little planet.

  • What's the name of that first song at 0:09?

  • Meh Sonic music is not always super fast like you seem to prefer. Take Marble zone for example. I actually thought the american future theme sounded more fitting.

  • I gotta say, I absolutely adored the Japanese version, which is the one I own.

The soundtrack kicks arse, and was the main reason I played through the game again.

  • the music for the american version fits real well

  • 4:38 ruined it

  • Comment removed

  • Will you ever do one's on the other sound tracks.

  • USA music I must say.

    It was smoother.

  • Japanese all the way. It's not that the US songs are horrible or anything...they are just too slow and uninteresting for a Sonic game.

  • in my opinion, the Japanese songs are loud, fast, and obnoxious. "more better" yes, perhaps, for the first 30 seconds of it, but if I were actually playing the game the American songs would be much more tolerable over the long run. The Japanese songs are cool, but I prefer more laid back music in my video games, like Donkey Kong Country for example.

  • 1)That's a dumb reason, it's in fact the original but just because it's the original doesn't mean it automatically deserves more praise.

    2) I do agree that the Japanese soundtrack has a bit resemblance to the older sonic tunes, but why is it such a bad thing that one soundtrack does a musically different approach, most sonic games do that! There are plenty of catchy tunes on the US version.

  • 3) That is absolutely NOT true, this proves you're just posting biased bullcrap, i bet you barley even listened to the US version.

  • 4) The reason why they didn't change the past tracks is because the tunes are PCM audio ehich means they are coded into the game.

Changing the music would basically require alot of reprogramming and time.

  • Comment removed

  • are the european and japanese versions the same?

i'd love to play sonic CD in its original format, but i don't think there are enough good games to make the sega CD worth having. i'll try and get a european copy of the PC version.

  • I'm pretty sure the PC version is the same as the US version... or am i thinking of Sonic 3D/Sonic Gems Collection? I dunno, I might as well check it out since my UK release of Sonic Gems Collection they put in the US Sonic CD instead!

  • eur and jap have same music on the original mega cd! but stupid eur gems collection has Us music..... =(
