  • Fantastic! Great job, guys!

  • Great to see your videos, Zac! I met you at SFO in March when you were playing some shows in the Bay Area. Slainte, David Finley

  • Is there anywhere I can get sheet music for the beautiful music you play?

  • Gorgeous playing!

  • wow! the change of tuning moving the capo of the bouzouki is excellent!!! great music!!! Could you tell me the capo´s model and brand?

  • theres something about that accordion thats so fuckin awesome

  • how long has the accordionist been playing?

  • @thedicebreen, I would say since he was pretty small. Stephen is an all-Ireland melodeon and flute champion as well. He now plays and tours with the band "Grada".

  • Great to see another C#/D player out there. nice playin

  • really good very nice to listen to

  • Coming along beautfully! You've got the spirit and that's what you should hold onto with all your might.

  • @lexinaut, thanks! We plan to:)

  • Nice playing lads . Bravo Gracias muy bien ----pat

  • Gracias, Pat!

  • great zac .. ta for the music

  • My all time Fav! Where might I obtain a rolling capo for the Zouk? I am in Australia.

  • Sorry it took so long to get back to you! I am playing a QuickDraw capo here. Much better than a rolling capo.

    Cheers,

    Zac

  • @Legertymusic can those be used on guitars too?

  • @findthemonthefloor Are you referring to the capo? Yes, there are several sizes of QuickDraw capos, for thin or wide guitar necks, zouk, banjo and mandolin. Google quick draw capo.

  • Hi , I play button accordion too. Love your stuff. Please put more vids on off this kind of repertoir and be sure to check out my chunes too! Thanks. Hector

  • yeah right on guys! sounds great

  • I play guitar and i'm learning bouzouki and picking it up pretty well, and my mate plays accordian/melodian and hopefully we'll be able to be jamming like this pretty soon!

    this is ace!

  • Thanks, mate! It certainly is fun. Put some videos up when you jam!

    Cheers,

    Zac

  • Beautiful lads! Keep posting.

  • I enjoyed it

  • is it hard to play d bouszuki Zac i wud love one

  • You can make it as hard or easy as you wish, but on the whole it is pretty forgiving, more so than the guitar I would say. Especially if you use a modal tuning like GDAD or ADAD. It is getting the strumming hand down that takes time. Go get a zouk!

  • This my favorite video!!! I love this song and the arrangement!, Folk in pure state!!

  • Thanks!:)

  • Zac, what kind of capo are you using that allows you to slide it off so fast in action?! That's amazing.

This is a great set guys!

    Kyle

  • Wrong, found the CD, was getting it mixed up with a Cape Breton Jig.

  • Think the first tune is on Josephine and Pat Marshs CD from around 1994, not sure though, cant find it now. Had it lyin around somewhere. Anyway lovely tunes

  • cool i play the box two an-mhaith

  • amazing guys, go an mhaith :)

  • well done great! im gonna buy a bouzouki for christmas

  • You guys are amazing.

  • Thanks!:)

  • nice accordion , I have 2 just like that one

  • go on doherty ya ram

  • Accordion playing rips!

ps. Have you guys seen the song 'Ten Thousand Ships' by Mike Batten?

  • Wow guys, that sounds awesome!

  • Great Timing + Lovely Music- jim,,,,

  • Your are the best!!! fantastic songs!!!!

  • Absolutely!;)

  • You guys are so good! Listening to this music makes me want to start Irish dancing again :-)

  • You should!:)

  • ey, where'd you get ahold of that bouzouki? I'm looking for a similar one.

  • My zouk was made by Joe Foley of Dublin in 1995 and once owned by Clare man Vincent Fogarty. Google Joe's name and I am sure you will be able to find his contact info.

    Cheers,

    Zac

  • Vince is from Tip,no question

  • Ah, you are right there. The fact that he lived in Clare for a while confused me. Thanks for the correction!

    Zac

  • i just saw your video when i typed in 'emerald beat'. were you a musician there last season, cause you look really familiar haha. but good job! sounds awesome!

  • I was indeed, Stephen and I both were as a matter of fact! Thanks for the kind comments:)

    Zac

  • Sounds great, guys! Way to go!

  • Thanks and awesome screen-name!;)

    Zac

  • Very smooth, very relaxed. Keep it real, well done lads.

  • Thanks!

  • can you pleeeeeeeeeaaaaaaase tell me how to get the strap onto a bouzouki i cant mine on and my arm is aching:( nice playing

  • You have it fasted on the bottom of the body with a strap button and then can either tie it onto the head or have another strap button on the top of the body underneath the bottom of the neck. I've only ever used it tied to the head. Nice vid ;)

  • Yeah, in reply to wolfandraven and Niklagi, my zouk has a custom strap button installed on the back of the headstock as that is how the previous owner liked to play. Great for sitting but I may install one in the heel for standing.

    Zac

  • take it to your local luthier/guitar shop. an experienced person can show you the options. it shoudl cost about $10 for a knob or two and the same for the install. good luck.

  • Wow! Good stuff! I've played a Joe Foley 'zouk - had tea with him at his home in Dublin, very nice man - and loved the feel of the instrument. I play a Taylor 510 right now, but I've got my eyes open for a bazouki of my own.

  • I have never met Joe, but I hope to one day. By all accounts he is a great guy and gentleman. I am proud to have one of his instruments and (I hope) a 10 string someday as well! Thanks for the kind words:)

    - Zac

  • You Guys are Wicked!!!!!

  • Thanks!

  • That was very nice! Thanks for that you guys!

  • hi zac, absolutly loving the music here, and every other vid aswell, keep it up man!!come here i have a question,do you know where you'd get a good zouk here in ireland??i'm a piper meself, but i'd love to get a bazouki, lovely sound out of them!!cheers kevin

  • Nice tunes, tight playing.

  • Is that a C#/D box?

  • It is indeed.

  • Just took up B/C, but trying still to learn the DD# fingering...

You are both exellent, hope to have a tune with yous one day!

  • bon esprit, merci

  • savage stuff lad..ne gigs cumn up soon?

  • nice job

    is the zouk tuned GDAD?

  • Yes GDAD, thanks,.

  • fhuckin rockin out aint yall

  • where can you get an accordion like that? i looked on the internet everywhere for one for about 3 hours and could not find it.

  • Hi the accordion is a basic, hohner, erica model, prob 20 or 30 years old, had it tuned to c sharp d this year, by charlie harriss, with the action and playabilty changed, and reeds have a dry sound, shouldnt be to hard to find one as long as you get a good guy to do the work on it. you should pick one of those box's up for a few hundred.

    Stephen

  • That is wicked.

  • I like it!

  • this is really great !

  • Out of tune???!!!! Somebody needs to get a life!! Wonderful music guys. I've gotta get back to Ireland.

  • Awesome playing. You guys are really talented. And Mother's Reel is very beautiful, can't get enough of it.

Please, put up some more zouk vidoes :)

  • definitely is the bouzouki not in tune with the box.

But relax, its a nice melody and well performed. You have to stand positiv critic.

  • I had just put all new strings o the 'zouk that day, so I suppose it may have been slightly out of tune with itself, and the box may have been a little off as well. I can't really detect it in this video, though, and I tend to be really picky about tuning as anything more than slightly off really bothers me. - Zac

  • Coliban

I think maybe it's your head that out of tune.

I won't be asking you to tune any of my instruments.

    Sean

  • Hmm, maybe the bouzouki an the box are not in tune ?

    Whatever, very nice play !

    ****

  • Out of tune? Where are your ears?

  • nice dry accordion sound....love it...beautiful ornamentation

  • Very nice settings with variations. Your transitions are smooth and you know each other's playing. You play well together. Keep it up!

  • Great stuff. And that's pretty smooth--changing the capo mid-strum.

  • Excellent !

  • Right On!

  • awsome playin guys

  • jesus lads...you are fucking brilliant

  • The second tune sounds so much like the Mountain Road with a lot more ornamentation.

  • It is similar, now that I listen to it. However, the Mountain Road is an old Michael Gorman tune (and originally had many more parts). The tune we play here comes from Tommy Peoples.

  • Good stuff!

  • I really love your style and sound - amazing.

  • Thanks!:)

  • C'est un vrai plaisir de vous écouter.Vous jouez merveilleusement bien.

  • didnt know u could play this many instruments

    cheers

  • Hi guys!! Have to say your rhythm is awesome!

Zac, is there any other instrument you play? It's great!

And Stephen, I've met your brother Tom when I was in Ireland this june. We've spent a great time with him and his band. They're so kind.

I'm part of the Comhaltas River Plate branch in Argentina. Give my regards if you see him.

I'm Matt (the flute player), by the way!

  • Nice Set! Can you tell me more about Zac's 'Zouk? Where from, cost, and is it 'paired strings' vs 'octaves' on the lower 2 courses? What's the scale length? Whatever you can tell me. I like the sound and I want to get one. Tks for the post. Free beer!!

  • Simply first-class! Thanks for sharing!

  • Stephen is from Mayo, Zac is from Tennessee.

  • great stuff lads where you from

  • so nice...thank you to post!

  • very nice indeed! ...and thanks for your lomments on my playing too!

  • great playing lads keep 'em coming!!! Lizzy :) x

  • Stephen you've gotten so good. I look forward to prank calling you with the lads using Hawkins speech on the pc and requesting these tunes. You know who this is?

  • Great playing there. You know, this has actually provided some very good information in terms of research. I think the second tune was Tommy Peoples' reel except in D (you know, the one which no-one had a name for). Well, if you call it the mother reel, I think we've made a step forward! :D Thanks for the video.

  • Sounds brilliant - so lively and lyrical as well. Look forward to the next!

  • Beautiful playing..!!!!

  • This was great! It had never occurred to me to just slide a capo out of the way, mid-song. I don't think that'd work with my capo... Nice trick.

  • So Loverly!!!
