  • I admit, the first version I heard was Brooks and Dunn. Ronnie Dunn does sound a lot like BW, in my uneducated opinion. However, I hear the original a lot on oldies radio, which prompted me to seek out the original. Regardless of your opinion of Brooks & Dunn, country music in general, or cover versions, it should be an honour to have your song covered by a contemporary country band nearly 10 years after your passing, introducing your song to a new generation.

  • @56kanaka Yes, How beautiful it is to be young and free. Our times were a little slacky but were peaceful and pleasant .

  • Of course Ron . I knew it before he hit the first word. I thought he sounded familiar . This is a great song. Thanks for clearing that up for me. Your the best .

  • @KCKILLERCAT - you're welcome Sharon!

  • I remember this song from when I was little. There's this video my Mom took of me sitting on the front steps singing this song word for word. I wasn't born in the 70's, but I sure wish I was. The music then was so much better then it is today.

  • I wasn't quite a teenager in the 70s, but I was in elementary school and remember this song well. It played on AM WKTM in Charleston SC all summer long--great memories. Being a kid in the 70's will be the best! Hey, none of us even knew what a car seat was; no one used seat belts either. Me and my sister just bounced around in the back of mom's Olds Cutlass. Thanks for sharing this great video of a timeless classic. Cheers!

  • Brings back peace of mind.

  • Born 23 years later & LOVE this song

  • Thanks, I had almost forgotten about this really great tune.

  • I thank God I grew up in the 1960's and 70's.

It was a wonderful time to be a kid and early adult.

This song brings back cool memories.

    Thank you.

    George Vreeland Hill

  • @GeorgeVreelandHill - you are very welcome! Ron

  • Can't hear this enough, or see the great movie enough. His HS picture is awesome.

  • I remember hearing this in seventy three, also like the B-D cover

  • BW stood for buckwheat! Larry Carlton played guitar on this tune. Stevenson was pioneering the "pop" country sound of today without knowing it. If you can find any of his albums they were pretty good stuff, Lead Free was one, We Be Sailin', another.

  • a very talented guy, died way too young.

  • Wish there was a video of B.W. singing this song. I named one of my cats after this artist. I love the song so much!

  • Great song! Love to Hear a Man sing like this! whooooaaaa babyyy!! Makes my heart melt, my lips drool & my hands shake...haha! WOW to be in such a Presence of a Man...God can we have B.W. back?!!!! btw is B.W. the originator of this song? Hey thanks so much for sharing this God of a Man w/us! I can feel he is missed :-)

  • Almost forgot about this song until I watched an episode from the DVD "Life On Mars" I had even forgotten that Brooks & Dunn covered this song awhile back in '96.

  • Thanks so much, Ron! As always, pix go with the words! I just love BW's version, the original, best! Thanks for the work! :-))

  • @ChrisCurtisFan - Cheri, you are very welcome!

  • Buckwheat!!!!!!!!!!!

  • what a song. period.

  • A phenom who was taken away from us far too soon. Most ascribe this song to Brooks & Dunn. B.W. had more natural talent under his little fingernail than those two put together.

  • I agree! Being a teenager in the 70's was awesome! I was a gay teenager & even with the constant fear of being exposed & possibly killed I'm still happy I grew up then! You know the music is good when it gets you through that shit! What do gay kids listen to today? As Quentin Crisp said, "A lifetime of listening to house music is a high price to pay for one's sexuality". (actually he said "disco" but you get the idea).

  • @tdobson21 I too was a gay teenager in the 70's.....and if it wasnt for music, I dont think I would have made it through....it battled the blues for me, and kept me company when I felt I was the only gay boy in the universe....this one by BW Stevenson was a favourite of mine.....

  • @FMHammyJ how dare you associate a beautiful song like this with homosexuality. You should be ashamed of yourself and repent.

    You need Jesus.

  • @KDME30 Jesus, save me from your followers!......and fyi, Jesus never mentioned homosexuality once in the New Testament...

Oh and one other thing....go fuck yourself....

  • @FMHammyJ Actually Jesus condoned the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah which God destroyed with fire specifically because of their blatant and disgusting homosexuality.

  • @tdobson21 you should fear God because He is the one who will send you to hell eternally unless you repent of your homosexuality.

  • @KDME30 I wasn't going to respond to your reply but decided to leave you with a quote by Robert Ingersoll an American freethinker from the late 1800's. "If there is a God who will damn his children forever, I would rather go to Hell than to go to Heaven & keep the society of such an infamous tyrant. I make my choice now. I despise that doctrine. It has covered the cheeks of this world with tears. It has polluted the hearts of children & poisoned the imaginations of men..."

  • @tdobson21 Sorry but mans mind has been poisoned since Adam first disobeyed God. Your wrong view assumes that man has a right to disobey a Holy and Just God. He will demand glory from His creation. Weather that be in eternity with Him singing His praise, or in hell as you choose. You obviously love your sin therefore disbelieve to preserve your perversions. Judgement will come from God as in the day of Sodom.

  • Ah back when music was good, you could understand the words and they were worth listening to. Thanks for posting

  • @lechatboote- you are very welcome!

  • What? No live performance? No wonder Brooks and Dunn's version kicks ass!

  • Great Song! It took me back to the old days.

  • Brings back memories of late summer 1973. Thanks for posting.

  • this song hurts me. maria is the name of the girl my bf lost his virginity to, 6 years before he even knew i existed. stupid of me to be jealous but what can i say? im a girl.

  • The Drummer on this song was the great jim gordon.

  • I was thirteen then and I bought this 45 and I was part of why it soared to the top ten. I still <3 this song and no cover version will ever replace it or that music era.

  • @RETRO TONY, gotta find mine, it's been quite a while since I've used it, thanks for the heads up

  • the drums in this song are fucking AMAZING

  • Cool. thanks for the upload. I just recently heard this song on the show 'life on mars' the US version.

  • This original is so much better it hurts my hair.

  • This guy should be much more well known than he is.

  • Buckwheat was far from a 1 hit wonder, he was a friend of mine

  • Great saw him Live in the musical captial of the world Austin Tx and at Luknebach TX 1970-1974

  • Too be a teenager in the early 70s was one of the coolest things in the world! I know cuz I was there. Thanks for the post!

  • @56kanaka- you're very welcome!

  • @56kanaka

I was there too. It was a great time!

  • @56kanaka I know, no internet or cable etc, but we had all this great music to listen to. A great time for sure.

  • @56kanaka Did you have a ZigZag Belt buckle? I has one back in 73'. Wasn't it so different from today. It seems as teenagers we were happier than the teens today.

  • @56kanaka Yep I agree, I love the era when music was evolving, and there was plenty of great music to keep us going back then. Today the music industry, and artists have changed alot, but I guess that's the beauty of it..

  • @56kanaka so was I the best days of my life was in the 70,s how i wish i could go back.lynyrd skynyrd,ac/dc ccr and the rest WOW what a time.

  • @56kanaka There was nothing to compare it to before or since, best times in history to be young.

  • So that's what truck drivers think about when their on the road.

  • great crossover song. we lost him at 38. such a shame,

  • Its a good song....but hard for me to handle. Maria is the name of a girl who took something from me....but nonetheless a great song.

  • imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, but no one can beat the real thing. this is an awesome song by the man who wrote it.

  • What great days those were.

  • Thanks for posting this uplifting song. Reminds me of my "long hair" days and my wife in Mammoth Lakes, CA. Beautiful time to be alive!

  • @ducraker- you are welcome!

  • @ducraker you can still have long hair, ya know.

  • @ducraker mine was down to my ASS lol.but it was a great time and i miss those days.not but a few of us left that i ran with still alive but man was it a great time to be alive the girls the music and of course the fucking cops always there to mess with people but wouldn't trade it for nothing.

  • @ducraker Well, it reminds me when I "had" hair!!

  • @EcoPaintSpecialists1- I'm sorry I didn't see that nasty comment from Topshelftom1 before. I just removed the comment. I saw three more comments from this sick person on someone else's channel page. I tried to go to Topshelftom1 's channel but....they have closed the account. It's sad that there are people like this in the world and on youtube. I have blocked a few of these sickies before. I will try to catch and block them as soon as I see them. God Bless, Ron

  • @rwells47 Tks Ron. I've never seen this poster before, except here, but being public, there's all kinds in this world, some having no place we choose to reside. On another note, Thanks posting this video, embedding in history for all to enjoy here on the tube. B.W was never a huge success, but many have enjoyed his lyrics and melodies since he produced them. Was sadden to hear he passed several years ago, and will always remember B.W by this song, "My Maria"~ Best to You, & Rich Blessings, Cal

  • Whoever is impersonating me on here (and I believe it to be someone by the name of Garrick Alden from Laurel, MD), should be arrested for his various comments.... it is not me posting those things, apologies for any confusion, and it pisses me off having my name and youtube name associated in any way with his nasty comments.

  • I've commented on the Brooks & Dunn version, but I've gotta say that "the original" is as good. It's a good song, period. A very good song.

  • The chant in the chorus always reminds me of "The Lion Sleeps Tonight". Great song.

  • Never knew B&D covered this this is awesome!!!

  • WOW...I loved this song back when I was a TEEN!!! So in late '73 I turned 20. WOW WOW WOW!! We had the greatest music!!! I am SO glad it is still being played. I had no idea this fella passed away. Just WAY too young! We never know when we will go. I am so thankful for each day I have. GREAT song!! Hope this and other songs last for a long time and others appreciate them. Thanks a lot to this site. The ads make it possible to enjoy.

  • He wrote this song, others have reproduced. He and his wife purchased my folks home in Farmers Branch TX. back in 1977. Really wished I could have met him. Couldn't have asked for a better person buying my folks home, where I grew up.

  • @EcoPaintSpecialists1 Your parents are lucky people, because only someone with a good soul could write a song this great.

  • @EcoPaintSpecialists1 A guy that lived down the street from BW, when they were growing up, said "Chuck" was so calm and reserved, hardly anyone at school knew he played the guitar.

You're being nice saying "others have reproduced it". I'd have to say "others have tried to reproduce it"

When I hear him sing it, then listen to the duo that seems to get all the credit, "Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery" first thought that comes to mind.

I've never heard anything bad about the guy.

  • B.W. Louis Charles Stevenson (Oct 5, 1949 - Apr 28, 1988) R.I.P.

  • @nantasketph what happened to this man so young?

  • @calalilygirl ... he died undergoing heart valve surgery at the age of 38

  • @nantasketph thanks, how sad.

  • Sweet tune

  • Would everyone please stop liking the "this is good but not as good as the original" comment? This IS the original. Way to prove you know how to misread dates.

  • @1nfectional what's wrong if people like it? they are not saying it is better... what. live and let live would you prefer they say they don't like it.. why are you on here? cause you like it?...just askin' lol

  • When B.W. Stevenson sings it, it's a rock song. When Brooks and Dunn sing it, it's a country song. They sound rather similar what gives o_o

  • That's my good wife. Thank youuuu.

  • @mcusa77- you're very welcome!

  • he could write and sing the hell out of some great great songs....that he was gone so soon was a great loss to american music lovers

  • I LOVE this song! This is the version my Daddy would belt out on Saturdays when I was a little girl! I was always so embarrassed... but it's a memory I treasure now!

  • great song! this is first time I heard this . I heard brooks and dunn never knew it was sung by this fella

  • I love this but also don't think the Brooks and Dunn cover is too bad. We always like songs best as we first heard them. The B&D version made a very good song known to many who may not have ever heard it.

  • this song only went to #9????

  • @StopTellingTheTruth Sometimes you can't improve on the original. BWS rocks!!!

  • Brooks and Dunn, sorry this is best

  • hey idiot ! where is the lyrics ?

  • @MrO7734 Hey Idiot...they are in the description...click on "Show More"

  • @EleSkelter- thanks for responding to that guy. I didn't want to! He was so rude. Ron

  • @rwells47 No problem...he posted crap on my channel too...I looked at his channel, he's a racist, homophobic jerk...and he should be taken down, I just don't have the ability to do it, I've reported too many already...so I just commented on your channel and blocked and removed his comment on mine...best of luck

  • @EleSkelter- thanks and best of luck to you too! God Bless, Ron

  • Do you have any by him? I had an album of his called Calabasas years ago, it had great version of "Please Come To Boston" on it along with some other good stuff. If not, thanks anyway for this.

  • @bumfug- hi I only have one of his albums. It has "Shambala" on it too. I will see if I can post some more songs from that album! Ron

  • Still loving this, thanks for such a perfect video to complement such a brilliant song.

  • @Ramona817 - you are very welcome! Ron

  • I miss BW. Great music and a great voice.

  • This song is pure sweet ear candy. Every note, every word... total perfection.

  • this song has been banging around in my head for literally weeks. LOVE it!

  • Where are the lyrics? It says "WITH LYRICS". : (

  • @camerondiazsucks-the lyrics are right below the video! A few inches below the video where it says "LYRICS" there are the words "show more". Just click on that and the lyrics will drop down! Ron

  • I still find it hard to believe that little Chuck Stevenson grew up to become B.W. and have such a talent for writing and that wonderful voice....

  • Thank you for posting. I have grown to love this song!

  • Excellent upload Ron. Thanks for sharing.

  • @James0022ify - you're welcome Jim! Ron

  • I hope today's generation knows about this original. Brooks and Dunn did a decent job on the cover but this is the best and real mccoy.

  • Strong voice, a great loss!

  • When this song came out, I had a teacher in school who's first name was Maria: Miss Mageros. I was only 16 then.

  • When this song came out, I had a teacher in school who's first name was Maria: Miss Mageros.

  • new discovery if you can believe

  • new discov ery

  • Great audio (and photos! Thanks to whom ever posted it! You have done a great job!

  • @markcasadevall- you are very welcome and thanks for the kind words! God Bless, Ron

  • B.W. Stevenson born Louis Charles Stevenson 10/5/1949 - 4/28/1988 did his first kick in the womb this day 9/3/2010 at 5:29 pm. He has reincarnated himself in only 12 years, less than 1/2 the time it took Nocola Tesla. Please celebrate with a glass of Merlot while you listen to his previous life musical hit "My Maria" which means My Mama or Mother. So much joy I wept. He is very cute & is blessed with some very lucky parents. His where about,s new name & parents are only his to know.

  • As his parents will not see him for another 8 months. He has earned his Godship for many more lives in the 5th cycles of eternity.

    In with Love,

    j

Anyone who doesn't celebrate can kiss his and my butt!

  • @1johnlangford2 thanks for your nice tribute to this human, this talent, this real person who left this earth too darn soon. I agree completely about the joy to the point of tears.

  • @Ramona817 Tribute! I gave him a new life! Yesterday the 2nd not the 3rd. But we all make mistakes don't we. NOT!

He wasn't a mistake, he's anew BABY BOY! GOD for those in the know.

    Giddy up!

    Love ya,

    john

  • @1johnlangford2 B.W. stevenson's son is my best friend lol.

  • Best version of this song right here!

  • Thank you so much for this post. It brings tears to my eyes, takes me back to the happy days of my childhood.

  • @liquidgee13 -you are very welcome! Ron

  • A timeless classic. This is a true Hall of Fame song, one of the best of all time for sure.

    What a voice.

  • Love this! This guy was really something. He wrote "My Maria" which has enjoyed greater appreciation year-by-year and...."Shambala" which is Tibetan Buddist lore. Hard to imagine two such great songs written by the same person being so un-alike.

  • My God...what a voice. EXCELLENT POST! (Someone HAS to find and post the flipside to "Maria", "August Evening Lady", which is one of the best songs I've ever heard--how it wound up as simply a flipside is a crime)

  • @Rainwhisker167-you are welcome for the post! I will look to see if I have the flipside but..I don't think I do. Ron

  • What a voice. What a talent to write and produce. Taken so early. God Speed Buckwheat.

  • Such a good tune - without a doubt, it was one of the best tunes in 70s. Thank you RWELLS47 for posting.

  • @kaladist - you are very welcome! Ron

  • Love This Song My school bus drive always play it XD

  • @whitespace64 - you are very welcome! I'm happy that this song makes you feel good! God Bless you, Ron

    BTW pics are kewl too!

  • @princessidosayi -you are very welcome- glad you liked it! Ron

  • thank you very much!

  • I can't remember how many pockets full of change we poured into the jukeboxes to hear this and other 70's sensations. Man those were the times when we'd sit in the local pop shop and pinball places all day drinking sodas and listening to awesome tunes on the big Wurlitzers, Rock-Ola's and Seeburgs. Man those were the days.

  • where is the lyrics?

  • @lulitanaka In the information section below the video play area.

  • R.I.P. B. W.

  • Great rendition. Great sound quality.

  • Saw this guy in a bring your own bottle club, the Rubyat in Dallas early 70's with a dozen people in there. Accoustic and unknown. He was dynamite. Great songwriting great perfomer, musta been a great guy

  • hey my name is maria so this song is my fav. both b&d and this guy did an awsome job. of course the original is always better, but at the cma awards b&d nailed it feelings & all.!!!

  • brooks and dunn covered this and completely destroyed it. I hate version, love this one!! incredible.

  • I love the song, and it is better than B&Ds version. This is the original version. Thanks for posting it.

  • B & D was good but nothing like the original.

  • @rdsanchez1966 I have to ask... who was the original, I thought he was the original and brooks and dunn done it a few years ago... would like to hear the original of this great song

  • @rdsanchez1966 B.W. Stevenson (5 October 1949 - 28 April 1988), . "B.W." stood for "Buckwheat." Stevenson is most famous for his song "My Maria", co-written with Daniel Moore.

  • Omg. I was born in 1960 and I still remember this.

  • Hey, both you guys, I was born in November 1959, so I remember this terrific record too - -

  • I was 17 when this song charted and it was a monster hit. It was not a country turn but a pop tune. It was a record I had to have for my collection and 37 years later I still have it in my collection. Such a wonderful song!

  • I play this on my electronic set

  • This is a great melodic song....who is this guy ? I'm not big on country music or what have you; But whatever you call this, I call it wonderous...*
