Wear something sturdier than sandals, please. Eyewear can save a headache, especially if you're not using a chopping block (at least prop the piece to be split against another). Axes split with the grain, not across as sometimes demonstrated; cross-grain is better handled by a saw. The chopper shown is less like a splitting maul, or even a felling axe, and profiled more like a tomahawk. Upper hand remains by the bit longer than just to lift, sliding down as a guide for point of impact.
