i got parents and fre swiming fry for free at my local petshop.

The time that it takes the eggs to hatch is usually a little less than a week. Mine were at just about a week but I think that was because of the temperature. The warmer the temperature the faster the eggs tend to hatch. I wouldnt go above 85. 80 Is prob a good temp to keep the tank at. Also they will take about 2-4 days (mine took 3 days) to become free swimming. So after the eggs are laid it should take about 8-11 days for the fry to be free swimming.

Dalmond your convicts might not be mature enough to breed yet because of there size. i have 2 normal convicts and within 3 weeks of putting the female with the male, i have fry :)

If the female is bigger than the male does it mean they wont breed because i have a female that is 2 inch and and a male that is 1 inch She is always chasing him around the tank. When i cut off the light at night i see her moving the gravel to form a pit. She always goes near it. But i dont see any eggs n there and + if she did lay eggs i didnt see the male come and fertilize them.

Also i have a friend who bought 2 convicts and they spawned in the bag on the way home.

some people say u should remove one of the parents and i wanted to know should u remove the female or the male

my pink convicts spawned one time and they care for the babies for about 3 weeks and then they ate them and then i had 2 females in a tank together and they spawned which is weird that they were attracted 2 each other

i have kept both the parents in there, and they would both be in there today but the dad died so that isnt really possible...

my pair took over 10 practices where they laid eggs and each time got a little further in the process until they finally were able to successfully spwan,

these types of fish (convicts in general) want to mate so much that even if there is no male there two females will try to do it

i hate when people on here say that males cant hv orange on there bodies

i hv 1 and it mated with 1 of my females

this breeding was unplanned bcuz me and the pet store owner but thought it was female bcuz of the orange on the body

i have never seen a male w/ orange on them

i suppose it could happen 1 in a million or something

but what that is one of the only things all the books and web sites say you can tell them apart by

and convicts want to breed so much they sometimes try to mate w/ the same sex

it wasnt same sex cuz the fry did get fertilized

and also i saw it is possible for males to have non extended fins and for the females to hv extended friends

i dont think you can sex them based on their fin length

the only other two things ive seen ppl say you can tell is my the lump males get on their heads and by size

i just usually go by the coloration on body but that costed me about 50 bucks to buy a new tank and sum food to raise fry cuz i wasnt going 2 let them die =]

lol, maybe buying the tank was best thing but if you need a new tank usually you should ask around w/ your friends first

i got all my tanks for free

my first betta was from my hair cutter

my 10 gallon tank w/ fish was from 4th grade teacher

30 gallon tank was from someone in my parents dance group

and my two 55 gall tanks were from some friends at our church who were going on a mission thing to africa and couldnt take their tanks

well... hair dresser, her daughter got the betta and little fish bowl thing and then daughter got too busy and mom didnt want to take care of it

10 gal... my teacher was tired of cleaning it

30 gal was empty and i got it cuase i had a 16 or so inch pleco in a 10 gallon tank, the 30 had no fish in it

and the two 55 gal tanks lol... were really dirty so im guessing they didnt like cleaning it anyway

and all but the 30 gal came with fish

and all of them came with supplies (lol i have 6 or so siphons) and food

but i have had to buy some filters and heaters and other stuff that breaks or runs out
