I was watching a snake-bite show on TV one night when a large snake literally dropped off the side of my house. I got my machete and went out to deal with it but found out it was a rat snake. I laughed and told him he had really bad timing. People who live in rural areas should educate themselves on snakes. Basically, if it has a round head let it be or move it away from the house. They're just looking for food, not trouble.
Damn! You had a nice sized one. People say that they are not aggressive but the only 2 I have ever caught were as pissy as watersnakes and struck a lot! But cool snake and thanks for sharing.
I live in splendora and saw a long solid black, snake in my yard the same size as the one your holding here, I wonder if that was a texas rat snake too?
there are eastern coachwhips that can be pretty dark in the splendora area in addition to rat snakes. usually the rat snakes still have some sort of pattern though. coachwhips are a relatively long snake as well.
There not dangerous or poisonous are they? He saw me and the dogs and was pretty startled, It was in the spring time and ever since them I haven't seen him at all.
@tsblair95 I wouldn't say it will chase you because it won't follow you after you back down, but they will sometimes stand as tall as they can and come at you to try to make you back away.
Cute. Not sure why picking up a snake makes me a redneck, especially when I am wildlife and fisheries management student that wants to work with reptiles and amphibians. But let me tell you, you definitely were clever and original with that extraordinary comment.

@thecapndandy ok then, maybe it was something else that chased me. idk what it was, but i was running faster than it. lol

@tsblair95 It might have just been making sure you were leaving. Never had a snake actually chase me out of all the ones I have found.

@thecapndandy maybe i was by its nest or something.
