  • Wish i could come over to play bass. nice videos and who cares what the trolls think. Trolls dont like anything good, productive, or positive; so the more they troll you the better you are doing to connect with humans. Love your videos, god bless. infowars(.)com

  • @lordertai thanks so much for the positive comments! I just don't get what motivates some people to be so rude and childish. No matter, I don't let it get to me it's just puzzling why they have to be that way. I wish you could come play bass too, always up for jamming Rush!! I am fortunate to have hooked up with an awesome bass player and drummer several years ago and we are a now a new Rush tribute act based in Minneapolis. It's a blast, we really enjoy it! Peace and God b;ess!

  • this clown is at his best because mamma bought his gear my cousin is portnoy of dream theater and we were doin this shit back in 1983 so i am not impressed wit his stupid shit and with one guitar and good tone ya dont need tons of stupit shit

  • @mcp682112 I couldn't care less if you are impressed or not and neither am I impressed that that your cousin is in Dream Theatre. A great band, by the way, how come they didn't ask you to join? BTW My mother, God bless her, has nothing to do with my gear, I work hard for a good living and buy my own "stupid shit". I didn't do this to impress you or anyone, it's for fun and sharing the joy of playing guitar and the music of Rush. Peace.

  • @mcp682112 ...So, what have you done that we should all be impressed about? Not impressed that your cousin is Mike Portnoy. Portnoy I'm impressed by. You...not so much. Bottom line, until you post something that's worth watching, put up or shut up.

  • OK you are the MAN!! It's driving me crazy what effect is that when your using the expression pedal during a solo part? Please Post!!!

    Thanks

    Chris

  • @123djcrispy Hey Chris, it is actually a volume pedal not an expression pedal. I use some heavy delay during that passige to do volume swells with the pedal. Thanks!

  • Dude I love you

  • @ThatItalianGuyTil That is very sweet of you...thanks LOL. But sorry I have a girlfirend.

  • You are awesome! What area do you guys play in? I'm a huge Rush fan, and saw the last tour and had to go buy an Alex Lifeson Gibson Custom in viceroy brown. I would love to see your band play! Ever get to the S.F. Bay Area? Please get in touch! chrispauli@hotmail.com or 925-891-4255 Chris. My youtube link is 123djcrispy.

  • you should add more tags so people can find your videos easier

  • Man you got a whole bunch of amazing guitars and amps (nice bass pedals too). Great playing man!

  • You need to crank that guitar way the fuck up I can't hear it that well, but excellent cover you obviously know how to play this song and that is an accomplishment as a musician.

  • what marshall r u playing through

  • @caseyjones67, this video actually featured a Hughes & Kettner Switchblade. Nowadays I am playing through both a Hughes & Kettner Coreblade and a Marshall JMP1. The Switchblade is an awesome sounding amp but I like the Coreblade and JMP1 better because of the on-board noise-reduction.

  • @caseyjones67

merlin4140 is there any way you can give us a tour of your rig? I would like to know what foot pedal you are using?

    Thanks,

    Chris

  • excellent cover man! alex would be proud

  • excellent representation of the Lifeson sound- great job!

  • this is one of my favorite solos ever on guitar. the sound is just so epic

  • It must be nice to have money.....

  • @thedark098 yes

  • EXCELLENT excellent excellent excellent excellent rendition. BRAVO

  • came back to this one again, just so very very good!

  • awesome guitar, awesome playing, awesome tone. Good job, man. And... is that a white EDS I see back there?

  • @DickMotorman Yes it "was" an EDS-1275 in the gorgeous Alpine White. I sold that guitar shortly after making this video. I loved it but hardly used it, the friggin' thing weighed a ton and I only ever used it for Xanadu, which we are now only playing a portion of in a medley of tunes so couldn't use it live for that anymore anyways. I do miss it sometimes, maybe someday I'll get another one LOL. But needed the cash to buy a LP Axcess.

  • could you give us a tour of your rig?

  • @houseband239 Hi, the rig has been completely reworked since this video, actually. Not because that one sounded bad just because I needed something that was easier to make adjustments to in a live situation. That rig's effects were all rack-mounted (including numerous stomps through a GCX switcher/looper). Now all the effects are onboard my amps (Marshall JMV1 & H&K Coreblade) and I'm using a Line 6 M14stompbox modeler for additional effects on my pedalboard. The M14 is awesome, recommended!

  • I have been denounced and heralded during my life for being an extreme critic. Normally I would crucify anyone for taking liberties with this stuff. The behind the beat last note of the main looney tunes lick in the low octave for instance, and the solos weren't note for note. You know what dude...I gotta say you get it and I enjoyed your solo improvs as they seemed to be in the feel and spirit of Lifeson. Great sound and a total feel for the stuff. Great job!

  • @jacksecret Thanks!!! I really appreciate the compliments and that you are ok with my variances. I understand how some purists get upset that I'm not perfectly nailing every note right off the studio record, but honestly I'm not trying to. I think my interperetations of Alex's frameworks are pretty good but he is Alex and I am not, so ultimately my own style is going to play a part in the song's passages. I'm doing this to have fun, not to be recognized as an exact clone of Alex's playing.

  • Best cover of it out there. Awesome job. That's quite a studio you got as well.

  • Awesome!

  • @merlin4140 What's with all of these trolls out today? Great cover! To whoever thought the tempo was off, take it from a guy who listens to this song on a daily basis, the tempo was right there the whole song.

  • @FCexpediter Hey thanks for the kind words man!! The funny thing about Rush tempo is that live they don't always play at the album tempo, quite often it's slower. I don't know how "spot on" this video's tempo is because I'm playing along to tracks created by my bandmates during a rehearsal, but I agree it's pretty accurate. No matter what, it's not about being perfect it's all for fun and people who get on here and rip me to shreds just make me laugh. They got issues LOL. Thanks again!

  • OK STOP TALKING AND GET TO PLAYING!!!!!!!!!

  • @P0V3RTY09 You got that right!!!! Well the Rush tribute project has finally started to gel, we are called "Spindrift, The Rush Tribute" based out of Minneapolis, MN USA. I will begin posting some clips of our rehearsals (be kind, after all they are just REHEARSALS LOL). We hope to start playing a few shows at local venues within a few months.

  • if the dude played at the proper tempo id be impressed

  • @Gpup4Lifez the dude will be reprimanded for not playing at the proper tempo, we are so sorry and depressed that he failed to impress you.

  • @merlin4140 ... I am not sure where Gpup4Lifez got the information that he feels he has graced us with but I can't disagree more!!! The Tempe is right on - Maybe he feels the lag in

Part IV " A Lerxt in Wonderland" but he couldn't be more wrong "that is exactly where the song is supposed to lag. how else would you get to the proper tempo in Part V "Monsters"

This is an awesome cover - you nailed it!!

  • @alienedwards Thanks for the support!! I never claimed this to be the perfect reproduction of Alex's masterpiece, it's just me playing one of my favorite guitar compositions of all time to the best of my abilities, and there are plenty of places where I am not perfect. It really puzzles me how many cynical critics there are out there sometimes, after all it's all for fun and not to be taken so friggin' seriously! Thanks again for the compliment!

  • @merlin4140 if this guy didnt choke on big black dick it would impress me. Fags

  • @Gpup4Lifez Get a life you jerk, because if this is what you sit around doing (getting ridiculously critical and being totally imature) then your's must really suck. This is a place for polite musicians to have some fun so take your cynisism and profane mouth elsewhere.

  • Damn you've got to be either single or rich to have that boss studio... or both

  • Dude! Awesome job. I've been a fan and playing Rush since the late 70's. I got to tell ya, this is really good. Plus, you must be loaded with cash you've got some pretty nice equipment there. Keep Rocking!!

  • the cleans on that guitar sound incredible

  • Alex Lifeson is my favorite guitarist ever and biggest inspiration, great job man!!

  • @chrislandrum62 Thanks!! I couldn't agree more, Alex has always been my biggest musical influence and I love playing Rush more than any other style or band. His writing is so unique, nothing else comares.

  • @UncleJoey12 Thanks man! The AL 355's were only for sale for a very short time, they only made 300 and they all sold out very quickly. I was very fortunate to get one! It is an incredible instrument, plays like a dream and sounds amazing.

  • @4stringjudas Thanks! Never to old to rock & roll :)

  • eh, would have been better if you hit your mark on time or just a little early

  • @IslandWreck uh..what mark??? I missed severalmarks in this video LOL. Eh, sorry you didn't like it but it's good enough for me and lots of people here seem to like it just fine. I know I'm not perfect but I have fun with it!

  • Nice! Thanks for the videos. More please.

  • I have been playing for 35 years and built up a lot of gear over those years, so I sold several guitars to buy the Lifeson (and it was worth it). All of my gear costs no more than many folks spend on a boat or sports car...we all choose our lifetime toys hobbies and mine are guitars and amps ;)

  • Damn what kind of job do you have that allos you to afford all that?

  • awesome

  • video description innaccurate. forgot to include geddy lee style foot organs

  • This song makes me wish i could play guitar altough i do play drums nd juss to say i can play many RUSH songs but overall good job how much did that baby cost.

  • alex lifesons brother!?

  • Wow, that's real nice! Nice guitar!

  • Love it! Great Solo!

  • This seems very good, but to my ear the guitar should be out front more in the mix. It's hard to hear the subtleties of the solo's cause the guitar is muddied up in the mix. Re-mix this and bring the guitar out of mudland into my face and I can better evaluate it.

  • @skorziks Sorry no can do...it is what it is LOL. This was filmed on a small cam-corder with a mic plugged into it for the room sound. Not studio quality I realize that, but that's not what I was going for, it was really just intended as a visual showcase for the guitar itself (not my talent as a sound engineer...or lack of it) as I had a few friends considering buying one but they were on a fencepost and wanted to see it in action.

  • Absoluely smoking man!!!

  • @pineal2012 Thanks much appreciated!

  • How much did the guitar cost?

  • LOL that's a loaded question :) Of course I did NOT play this entire song note for note off the original studio recording, although the framework parts I think I have down pretty well. But that is what I love about this song and other Rush tunes, Alex himself has numerous interpretations of his lead passages that he pulls off live and I like to improv a bit and use some of the riffs he has used on different tours when I "attempt" his songs. Alex rocks, I just love his textures and phrasing.

  • before I comment, where you going for note for note or just winging it?

  • Wow, thanks so much for the com[liments!!! You know the H&Ks are great amps for Rush (in the video it's a Switchblade, currently I am using a Marshall JMD-1 and a Coreblade) but there are many amps out there that will get a good Rush tone. It's really more about your skills as a tone tweaker and effects setup than it is about the amp :) I prefer Marshall and H&K but there's a guy in another Minneapolis-based tribute using a Crate tube combo and he has a great tone.

  • It's performances like this that give me direction for my Rush cover band. Quite the beatiful guitar, and fantastic sound set up, gotta be the best I've heard on here. I have a quick question for you though man. What amp would you recommend for Rush? I mean obviously, for their modern sound anyone would say a Hughes and Kettner. But I am just totally flabbergasted by your tone, and really curious. What do you run? Thanks in advnace, take it easy, and best of luck with your future gigs. :)

  • Very well played....awesome tone!!!.... this is one of my fav rush tunes....5 stars!!!!!....also cool jam room.....love it.

  • You're the man dude. FUCKING RUSH RULES.

  • Looks like I will be making the long trek from West Virginia to Minneapolis to see you guys!! Let me know when you "come out of the basement!!" I think I will wait until June or July, it's too cold there in Feb/March!! ;)

  • That was unbelievable!!! I closed my eyes and thought that it was Alex playing, you really nailed that one!!! Congratulations and please post when and where you guys will be playing, will travel to see that!!!!!

  • @marypal64 Hey thanks a lot!!! Well we are rehearsing and hope to play some gigs around the Minneapolis area in 2011, should be ready to get out of the basement around feb/march.

  • whatever

  • this is amazing sir. respect

  • @MrSchapira Thanks so much, I appreciate it!

  • @MrSchapira very good....have u ever met them? they played my high school dance in 1973 or 74 and i helped the roddies set up then alex was nice enough to show me the riff for working man..lol.. i was 13

  • Great set up, equipment and sound!! Thanks for posting this!! I never knew about the signature 335 (wish I did)!

  • 11 Months later I get to comment once again how great this video is. I see the members of Rush at sporting events every once in a while here in the Toronto area. It's so cool that a local band has become so popular around the world.

  • @StratGT Hey thanks man!!! I am amazed that it still gets hits this far down the road LOL. I DO plan to post some more videos of Rush covers this winter, bear with me. Life has been hectic. My buds and I are TRYING to get the Rush Tribute thing going but it is a vey slow process with our busy schedules. All the best to Toronto! And can't wait to here the boys' new album!!! BTW we are covering Caravan, very fun song to play.

  • Props to you man. Very hard song to get 100 percent. You pretty much nailed it.

  • @southport97 plenty oif goofs in there but I am good at covering them up LOL. Thanks much for the compliment!

  • probably the best cover of this song ive ever heard.

  • Sweet...

  • Excellent ! Amazing gears ! Great playing !

  • @Javic2112 Thanks!!!

  • What pedals were you using on this one then? They sound amazing

  • @zigzaghookie I used stomboxes in my rack when I made this video, I prefer them to rack effects. Maxon Chorus, Boss Flanger, Boss DDL, Maxon OD. The stomp models in the Line 6 M13 all sound just as good.

  • @zigzaghookie on this video I am using stompboxes (in my rack and looped with a midi switcher) Maxon overdrive, maxon chorus, boss flanger, boss digital delay

  • Are all of those effects you use throuought the song from the Line 6 M13 Stompbox??

  • @zigzaghookie Not on this video, but I am using the M13 now and it sounds just as good if not better. I like having all the effects right on the floor where you can tweak them quickly instead of in a rack like I did before (and in this video)

  • Pretty sweet cover man. The only problem is that it is a bit tough to here you over the backing track. You should lower the track a bit or crank your guitar up some more. This version seems to be a bit slow compared to the original as well.

  • Very Nice, both your playing and the guitar itself. Also,Nice studio! much better than the dingy basement I am confined to. Why must the wife always win?

  • What are those pedal boards you have there? What effects are in them?

  • the 2 people that disliked this are crazy! Your equipment sounds amazing, I wish I had that kind of money! Haha but I really enjoyed this video, you've got some skills there man.

  • Great job! Very Nice guitar! Even though I'm listening on terrible speakers at work, I can tell the tone is very much Alex inspired! Sounds great. I have a Switchblade too, and love it. As an old guy, I can remember jamming to this around late '79 early 80's in our drummer's garage! The cool thing about La Villa Strangiato is it's a song I can sing! ;-) If you get my drift!

  • Great job man, nice guitar. Do you have any strats in that collection? If so, what kind, and do you play any Rush on it?

  • @houseband239 Thanks man! No, I don't have/use any strats currently. I have owned a few over the years but I always end up selling them to get another Gibson, I'm just a Gibson guy I guess, they feel best to me and I enjoy playing them best. Fenders are excellent guitars, so are PRS, which I also played for a while. But I started on Gibsons and now I'm back to all Gibsons, just my preference.

  • Comment removed

  • Excellent cover, and excellent guitar! That has been my dream guitar since well before they released the limited ones. What kind of effect unit are you using for the guitar?

  • @rlm2112

in this video I'm using all stompoxes that are switched in and out via a GCX looper in my rack. A couple of chorus units, delays, flanger, etc... Alex was never shy on effects LOL. Nowadays I've dumped all the stompboxes in favor of a Line 6 M14 stompbox modeler which is an awesome unit. It goes right on my floorboard and I can tweak all the effects easily when needed without having to get into my rack or go through a ton of menus on a rack-mount unit.

  • Man I'm kicking my ass everday since I passed up the chance to buy this guitar .. just didn't have the money at the time and Gibson stopped making it .. GIBSON SUCKS FOR THAT !!! ... what a beauty of a guitar !!!

I play in a RUSH tribute band called ASSUMED CONTROL and I NEED THIS GUITAR !!!

  • @LifesonFan4Life

dude, you can always order a guitar just like this from the Gibson Custom Shop.

  • Great job! Enjoyed this video very much!

  • @plexitone Thanks so much. I really enjoy playing this song, it's one of my favorite Rush tunes.

  • very nice!!

  • Most excellent!!!

  • @jim21jam , thanks man, I appreciate the compliment

  • @jim21jam Thanks!!

  • oh my god! I thought you were going to start dancing in front of that mirror! what a riot!

  • @cciemail , nope I can't dance worth a crap! I'll just stick to playing guitaar half-assed LOL.

  • @merlin4140

how's the vibrato bar on that guitar? does it work pretty well? I didn't like the Bigsby vibrato bar on some of those. but that one looks a little better(?)

  • @cciemail actually the vibrato is pretty useless for anything but some subtle color, any attempt to dive bomb or do anything beyond a light touch and your tuning is toast. I don't use it (nor does Alex), I leave it permanently pointing straight backwards and use the guitar as a stop-tail unit. Regardless of not using the vibrato, I believe the whole Vibrola setup contributes greatly to the unique tone and vibe of this instrument.

  • sounds like to kbrd go over the guitar. to much kbrd. guit sounds great but hidden in kbrd sounds and reverb

  • @ericrob2112 it was just a casual recording using a camcorder, not a perfect mix I know.

  • I have a question:

Where did you get the synth pedal board? I've been looking everywhere and can't find one.

  • @cuberZ06 thesynth sounds are a Rolank PK-5 midi controller driving an old Roland 1080 synth module. The PK-5 is still avaiable brand new on the web at places like musicians friend or used e-bay.

  • @merlin4140 thanks!

  • WOW...Great Work !

  • @MajDogMeat Thanks man much appreciated!

  • rock on brothers to the religion of rush!

    keep jamming

ps. barely can hear the bass, ged always dominates the spectrum.

  • @lordertai Thanks! Yeah sorry for the poor mix I know it's not perfect

  • wonderful job.....rock on!!!! screw all the nay sayers....they don't have a clue!!!! would have loved to heard some french non sense around the 8 minute mark!!!!!

  • @metfanal Thanks! I'll have to tell Adam to lear French LOL!

  • Holy crap!

    That was mind-boggling.

You seem to know your way around a RUSH song.

    Damn!

  • @philmoakabeermo Thanks!!!

  • awesome cover, i want to play this song one day, but i doubt ill ever be that good, lifeson is a guitar genius. you are too :) how much was the alex lifeson guitar?

  • @infidelbug around $6,000 msrp

  • @Despotes518 No way it was much les than that

  • @infidelbug Thans much for the compliment! Don't ever say you'll never be that good, just always push yourself to be a little better each time you play and do the best you can, and that will be awesome. There is no "best" when it comes to playing music, it is the joy you get out of it that matters. Do it if you love it and if you always do the best you can then it IS THAT good

  • @merlin4140 thanks a lot :) i dont know, its so hard to make good music when you're surrounded by computer generated garbage. i want so badly to be able to make beautiful, challenging music.

  • u must be rich

  • @caseyjones67 I'm not rih, i have been playing guitar or over 30 years and have owned many guitars over time. I sold 3 guitars to fford this one

  • Impressive, very nice. (Is it just me or is the audio slightly out of sync?) Let me know when your cover band comes to Tel Aviv...

  • @physics2112 Tel Aviv, WOW!!! Now that would be a heck of a road trip! Thanks for the compliment, much appreciated!

  • Ahaha, I like the attempt at The Ghost of Aragon.

  • toronto boys baby

  • Great video. A few months ago I found out that Alex Lifeson uses Dean Markley strings (nickel steels CL 9-46) I love using them and I think you would too.

  • Nice headless video, hahahah

  • Thats great! Well done.

  • @NonLocalYokel Thanks man!!!

  • Awesome man....Love the Waa's at the begining of the solo...they sound better than Alex man .....really warm, great feel in the solos.....Sweeeeeeeet!

  • @dinglenutzz Thanks !!!!

  • Awesome!!! Great tone too. The backing track it a little slower than the original right?

  • @FFXGuitar Yeah I think you're right. It was recorded at a rehearsal and we were probably a bit slow LOL

  • @FFXGuitar Thanks!!! Yes the backing track is from one of our rehersals (minus the guitar, of course) and we play the live versions usually which are mostly a bit slower than the album versions.

  • im pretty sure you pronounced "Strangiato" wrong haha

  • I wouldn't doubt it LOL

  • im sure im not the first to say this, but your drums need help. I can drum btw.

  • @TheHydroponica Yeah actually you are the first to say that. Gotta disagree, Don truly rocks at anything Rush, best I've ever played with. That backing track I'm playing to here is not a perfect performance, it's just a random one-take recording off the monitor board at a rehearsal (minus the guitar track, which I'm playing live here), so that's why it doesn't sound like a polished studio track.

  • @TheHydroponica btw....your a dick

  • ja man!

  • Wow!! Great Cover! Just curious as to what are the pedal boards that you're using. I especially LOVE your cover of Cinderella Man - AWSOME!!- Thanks for posting!

  • @Nyxrayman Thanks much for the compliment! The pedalboard in the video is an Axess Electronics (now out of business) FX1 midi-controler that runs all my rack/stombox effects through a Voodoo Labs switcher. Also on the board are 2 EB volume pedals (one stereo to pan between acoustic and electric pickups) and a Morley wah pedal. Since the video I replaced the stereo volume pedal with a Lehle 3-way switcher to go from acoustic to electric to both with the tap of a button.

  • hey great job, awesome attention to detail. Your excellent!!

  • Wow! a REAL rush fan! I like to see covers of people who are playing their favorite bands with the real band gear! I did a cover of yyz on youtube, but I was using an ibanez guitar with crate amp and a a small pedalboard..... it was completely an other sound! you did a great job! I subscribed to your channel and I sent you a friend add. Amazing videos!

    Floukk (Étienne) ;)

  • Great sound, great job. Thnks....

  • Good job!

  • If you guys have ever studied Neil's lyrics, you know where his influences in objectivism come from. I'm no disciple of anyone, but I'm running a congressional campaign that will be based on those same philosophies. I'd be much obliged if you'd all critique my video's for my campaign.

PS I also put a few of my old guitar solo's in there for you.

    Thanks

    Patrick Thompson

  • Ayn Rand.

  • @pthompson2010

I myself am a big fan of Neil's lyrical art. His insights have moved me for a long time now, step by step getting clearer. You must know that I am not a native speaker of the English language, so many little shortcuts have been missed by me. Which makes it interesting viewing the matter from a complete different angle. Let's say this gave me the oportunity to get to the bottom of things through experience rather than thoughts alone...

  • @abstrus @pthompson2010

I find that every human being on the face of the earth has the legal right to read what Neil's gotta say.

It would make this world a better place, this or that way!

    One cannot argue with truth...

  • awesome cover man great lookin room 5*

  • WOW, I got goose bumps! Great guitar sound. I like the improvisation at 9:24, didnt Rush perform that version live?? Anyhow from a drummer and Peart fan...Rock On!

  • @OdyBeRidin Yes they did do a similar version live at some point in the 80s or 90s (it's all a blur LOL). I like to improv on the different live versions. Thanks much.

  • really enjoyed the video.....i used to have this track tabbed and could play most of it but nowhere near as well as you.....keep up the good work

  • Nice!Very Nice! I can remember when I first herd this Album....It blew me away..I to started paying at around 13 yrs old. 1 of my first songs I learned. Just wish I played like you back then....Anyways awesome job!

  • Nice

  • are you serious? you are not Alex Lifeson???

  • LOL, No I am definitely NOT Alex Lifeson, I just enjoy playing his music

  • Love it. My favorite Rush song by far. You do great work

  • Great! And this guitar is amazing.

    Rgds from Brasil

    Vito Montanaro

    Rush Project - tribute band

  • nice work.

  • hey ive been meaning to ask this: i notice on stage, lifeson and lee both have these small cords hooked into their guitars and not connected to anything else yet they are still connected to their amplifiers. What are these called? ive been looking for what they're calle dbut cant get no satisfaction! PLEASE HELP ME!

great cover by the way, merlin! :D

  • They use wireless transmitters to send the signal from their guitars to their amps. The cable you see plugged into the guitar runs to the transmitter which is either clipped to a belt or usually attached to the guitar strap. A receiver back by their equipment receives the signal and sends it through a cable to the amps or other gear they use. If you notice, I am using the same in the video. Thanks for the compliment!

  • @merlin4140 hey man, this is EXTREMELY good! what is that wireless system you use called? if you wouldn't mind, would you check out some of my videos? Great job!

  • Great...that's it...just Great....

  • Man, I've been in a rush trib band off and on for years; yours is one of the most authentic versions of La Villa as far as tone and technique I've ever seen! EXCELLENT job! I can totally relate to your comments about collecting and selling gear over the years..that's how it goes unless you win the lottery. See what you think abot our vids. Search youtube for Visions: A Tribute To Rush. We did The Trees and Limelight.

You guys should gig somewhere! Love to hear more!
