They had the best cream puffs ever in the history of the world! As a small child in the '50s, to me the Helms truck in the neighborhood meant only one thing: something wonderful to eat. My parents and grandparents would always buy their bread, but every once in a while, with a gleam in their eye, they would buy us kids a cream puff. Man, oh man!
The boy eating the chocolate donut in the last frame of the video: I was exactly that age when the Helms truck came around in the early sixties, San Fernando Valley, (my parents were valley kids and so was I). Those happen to be great memories because the experience of seeing a man show up out of nowhere with everything good to eat...well that's unforgettable.
Yes, I can still smell the aroma of fresh bakery goodies when the 'Helms Man' opened the rear doors of his 1947 Chevy panel delivery truck and pulled out the long drawers full of bread and pastries. The Helms man would pull into our driveway and sound his whistle at our home in Roscoe, California. (now Sun Valley) in the San Fernando Valley (circa 1947).
I can remember going on a field trip to the Helms Bakery in the 3rd grade. Their funny van/truck was at our corner in Burbank, California every morning. THey had the best coffee cake known to man.
Thanks for the Fun video-well done. Oh by the way, Palm Helms and Walt Disney were good friends and neighbors at the famous Smoke Tree Ranch in Palm Springs. Helms Bakery sponsored the "Best of Show" float in the 1955 Tournament of Roses Parade, announcing the opening of the newly built Disneyland.
I love your video. I lived in Azusa, and the Helms truck showed up weekly. 1960 thru 1964. Love this vid. I did one including the actual Helms Truck whistle. You did a great job on this. Thanks.
One of my fondest childhood memories was listening out for that Helm's bakery truck whistle...it was 1963 and they had a special promo for Tezuka's "Astro Boy" going on....I remember standing next to my mother as she bought a dozen donuts and a 45 record of the program's theme song that I'd been dying to get and how excited I was when the driver handed it to me. I remember the heavenly smell of fresh bread and how it'd still be warm as if it was just taken out of the oven...God I miss them!
