I have a 50 Hp Yamaha I can not get the gear unit to slide back together so I can put the bolts in

Isn't there a wire that needs to be disconnected?

I replaced my impeller yesterday on my 35 hp Mercury and it doesn't pump water-- only air comes out the tube.

Any ideas of what I must have done/not done correctly??

the pump base only needs to be removed if melted or damaged. The wear plate can be removed without removing the pump base.
