not to be mean or any thing be the boot i think is when the desktop and the icons are in vew not just the black screen so it's more like 20 seconds. but thats still fast.
It really should be. We worked on the Darwin project years ago and they used a lot of open source to make millionaires. I have a MAC G4 with OS X in my 3 year olds room its a excellent CD player. Oh yeah there's one (IMAC) in my trunk -can't give it away.
UNIX,LINUX - Apple BSD and UBUNTU - better security and the choice of Academia and Producers. Windows are for Worker Bees. No need to compete when you're in a whole other league. If your good you can write your own Native video editor.
I said Professional. Nothing Hollywood or very Professional can be done on that software, Only on Windows and Mac can pro video editing be done. Sure, Linux can be used as a SERVER, but never has the compatibility for the software to be used as a CLIENT.
who does that anyway? I mean christ, how many computer users are professional film developers? Besides, its called DUAL BOOT, why can't windows do that?
How do you bypass login screen? I use a BIOS password rather than an OS password.. so it is frustrating having to stick in 3 passwords to get to desktop (BIOS, Encrypted drive, Kubuntu Login)
The project is UEFI. Interesting I will start trying to go faster when someone breaks the 6 second bootchart till then my desktop is still up before I get comfortable in my chair. The rest is novelty.
Sure my bios is 7 seconds and I've contacted the manufacturer telling them my OS is faster than their bios - no response yet. My 6 second boot chart is posted at the bootchart wiki for ubuntu. Who makes the fastest bios?
Linus On EFI Linus Torvalds offered his views on EFI, the Extensible Firmware Interface beginning by describing it as "this other Intel brain-damage (the first one being ACPI)". EFI is a replacement for BIOS, originally designed for use on the ia64 architecture though since adopted by other computers, including Apple's Intel-based Macs.
Linus continued in a followup email, "don't get me wrong - the problem with EFI is that it actually superficially looks much better than the BIOS, but in practice it ends up being one of those things where it has few real advantages, and often just a lot of extra complexity because of the 'new and improved' interfaces that were largely defined by a committee."
He went on, "so EFI has this cool shell, a loadable driver framework, and other nice features. Where 'nice' obviously means 'much more complex than the simple things they designed in the late seventies back when people were stupid and just wanted things to work'. Of course, it's somewhat questionable whether people have actually gotten smarter or stupider in the last 30 years.
I agree however I'm waiting for someone to tie or beat the 6 second boot chart posted at the ubuntu bootchart wiki. So I can start my next project. This is about 4 months old.
Cant wait I'm getting a 30-35 sec boot on Ibex, with a 1.5 GHz Centrino, with 256 Mb of RAM, thats networking and additional apps, so its not bad at all for this old of a machine.
Now mamasmilk seriously. I tried to watch your posted videos, with emphasis on tried. What happened to dude's hand? Garage Band heh must be a Apple head.
no need for noatime these days - the default is relatime, which is a slightly nicer variant (which updates the last accessed time only if the file has been modified since, which is needed by mutt).
Because of your comment I tried it. The was a few seconds of pause on startup the orange progress bar game up went from left to right and that was it, there was the Desktop staring at me saying "bring it on" as I reached for the mouse. It often catches me unprepared.
Yeah, I have tried other boot options. Some flicker, some I just miss because I look away. But after you'd seen it once further need is a just a hypnotic fixation. The new W7 beta splash is really a subliminal message causing the masses to fall in line with M$ again.
the song please??thank you

HI i use Ubuntu but it changed to Kubuntu and it crashed Sun Virtualbox
CoolgreatHD 2 years ago
It changed? Must have loaded KDE and VB 3.02 slows down the kernel.
ruffinius1 2 years ago
It's probably the SSD, most of the boot time is spent waiting for stuff to load off the HDD.
I have a SATA 3.0GB hard disk that loads Kubuntu 9.04 in about a minute, from pressing the power button to Firefox starting up.

14 second are too much! you have to try arch linux with fastboot package... from grub to console 5 seconds. from grub to gnome 10 seconds
scindypaul 2 years ago
wow sounds interesting, what is the arch linux based on? do you know would xbmc work on it?
pyroger101 2 years ago
archlinux uses KDE

archlinux uses whatever you want it to use.

XBMC has been ported to Boxee but Elisa is better in my opinion
ruffinius1 2 years ago
Grub to Gnome in 6 seconds bootchart posted at the bootchart wiki. Still the fastest documented.
ruffinius1 2 years ago
arch linux boots fast cuz it's lite, and that's about it,it wouldn't,ever be able to compete with a mainstream os like Windows the way Ubuntu does.

UBUNTU DOES NOT compete with windows. Quick, name a pro video editor for ubntu that works native.

You can choose the option during setup or the login window manager

The maker of the board. They will never make it faster for it is impossible to. EFI is the future. That is what macs use. Its instant.

Finally a faster bootup, my Interpid needs like 45 seconds which is not that bad...
1,47 Ghz
768 MB of RAM
and besides that I have a lot of apps on startup, so I can't expect much faster boot.
BTW
Anybody tried upgrading from interpid to jaunty?

Use " quiet " parameter for Kernel.
and " noatime " for fstab.

No problem with the file system except other file systems can't read it. The tweaks were the typical ones you can Google. EXT4 is faster by default.
ruffinius1 3 years ago
Really cool, but I'm not sure if its stable enough for me. Did you have any problems with ext4 so far? What "tweaks" did you use to speed up boot?
