Gordon Lightfoot is mystical, pure folk and hip far beyone the early 70's. My dad used to play him back when we were children while firing up a mean ass BBQ. I am now 37 and even though my dad is still alive, I live far away in California from him and my mom right now and these songs give me tears, because nothing lasts forever. Back when my dad graduated, they took a trip to Canada and saw Gordon perform live before he made it big! Thanks for the video legomaster335!
@robman200 my memories allow me to laugh now,but also remember being scared shitless the night I had my expeience.I feel pretty sad now wondering what went through the crews minds that night
seriously???!!! instead of listening and paying tribute to these men who tragically lost their lives, you quarrel and bicker over facts. Instead of acting like kindergarden children trying to impress one another, try to show courtesy to these guys and either drop it or leave.
@davidrodgersNJ There is a thing called the interwebz. You use something called a computer to access this interwebz. Ask someone what Google is, and when they are done wiping your ass, tell them to do a "search" on "Edmund Fitzgerald" maybe they will need to read it to you. Oh, I'm sorry to interrupt your Harvard grant curing AIDS. My Bad
I have the original recording somewhere (???) and I have it on CD also and I am always amazed at how good the mix was for being analog and 1974, the reverb on every microphone is perfect for the mood of this song. Listen to the vocals mic, the snare drum mic especially and the lead guitar. And even though there are only 5 chords in the whole song, it is not at all redundant and I could easily listen over and over.
@inogi339 Thanks for explaining how everyone on the internet uses dislike buttons. Also, thank you for clearing up that there's no possible way that someone could dislike a youtube video because they don't like the song.
The other reason I connect with this song is that the same storm system that took the Fitz to the bottom killed my dad a week later - he had a heart attack shovelling the snow that set of storms dropped on Minnesota at the same time it was blowing up gales on Superior.
everynight my mother and father would play this song on their stereo in the living room, full blast, my room at the end of the house I would fall asleep to it every single night. The song frightened me of the lost souls who all dissapeared on that ship that night, I knew that at a very young age, still scared. 17 years later at age 20 I listen to this song and cry for them all, and know what I know about this history, growing up with it in my life, and taking it to the grave with me.
@arisblaze That;'s because the lake is so deep and so cold. More than 1500 feet in places, and it never gets much over 55-60 degrees fahrenheit in the summer. I spent many an August on the Canadian shore half way between Thunder Bay and Sault St Marie freezing my future manhood swimming in Gitchigumi.
@ryoushii wow, guess you're not much farther north than me, maybe an hour or so? Don't think I've been as far as Sault St Marie but Fort Frances was a bit hectic when I went through there last. I live about an hour inland from Duluth, so I'm quite familar with Superior's whims. We feel her effects most spectularly in the late autumn months.
The actual depth of the lake I forgot however- lol
Grew up with this song...hated it when I was a kid. Now I appreciate it and LISTEN to every note, every word and get goosebumps. I love Gordon Lightfoot now and love my Dad even more for playing his music back then and patiently knowing I'd come around. Love you Dad and can't help but think of you every time I hear Mr. Lightfoot's music. xo
i like how most of my views are from guys over 30 or even 50.that makes the song better to listen to from some people who were born when she was still sailing the waters
