All in all Dire Straits is today an underestimated band.Knopfler is one of these guitarists who have a real style of guitarplaying. Like Gilmour or BBKing, he gives us an undescriptible emotion.He knows how to make cry his guitar. You just have to listen Brothers In Arms or Telegraph Road to understand.

All i wanna say is DS is one of this greatest bands of all time but people aren't always aware of this. Look at Metallica or SOAD, they know it and are so influenced which is why theyre good...

@Aiellu The critics can't disregard that one (as most selling), and he barely plays guitar properly on that album. The big populace only knows about MFN, Walk of Life and maybe maybe Sultans. I don't mean that it's a bad album in any way, but compared to all the earlier ones it's nothing. BIA will always be thought of as a little but silly by the magazines. Also, live his guitar playing reached a lot of higher levels, and to me Alchemy Live is the best piece of guitar playing ever by man.

Chris Whitten is playing a differet drum set than the rest of the concert, I wonder why he does that. I'm sure the huge kit he uses all along the concert would be comfortable to play Sultans.

@velanapontinha I was thinking the same thing. I suspect it's to give the tune the feel of a smaller band -- the way DS was when Sultans was written. Notice that for this one, the band is grouped relatively close together (at least until the part in MK's solo when the sax and keyboards come in).

Ithink the wembley-85 is slightly better..I think it is the raw twang on the guitar is missing here. I am going to listen to alchemy now so my opinion may change on the best live version.

Fans should also look @ some early stuff with chet adkins. These to legends redefined what you can do with a guitar in my youth. It is Mr Knopfler that showed me there is so much more to guitar than playing as louder and faster.

No matter what version / what year of Sultan of Swing, this one has gotta be one of his pinnacle in performing this song, simply because the ensembles of all the plays felt totally fluid from both halves of the songs leading to his final solo. Magical works were maestro-ed from down/up/down the entire guitar effortlessly with extreme precision and superior speed w/o compensating clarity (nice guitar helps too :D ), can't find any flaws other than wishing to see it live again =/

If you compare to Wembley -85 they sound heck a lot happier back then.. Seven years does a lot even if the performance was almost same note by note. Somehow this lacks all the power and fun feeling even if Knopfler still kicks ass more than any heavy metal these days
