I loved this album and I don't mean to be a yes man but I agreed with and basically felt the same about almost everything you said about it. Great review Great album I'm so glad I got it and I can't wait for BBNG to put out more stuff.
I'm so glad to have discovered your thoughtful reviews. Great takes on this album, and I look forward to hearing more. I am surprised, though, that you didn't mention The Bad Plus even in passing, as they are another (preceding) great "bad" jazz trio who gained notoriety with their translations of other genres but who are arguably at their greatest when jamming on their originals.
"but i think that musicians on some level have to have that attitude, or else they're not gonna propel themselves passed what influences them" i fucking love you
does youtube pay you? because i would pay you... if i had a lot of money... and a website that made it so you can post videos so others can watch them
Giant Steps is more complex than this stuff, even at 50 years old. If you don't appreciate the masters, you won't make original music. It's not rehashing. Adding new genres and melding them with the harmonic language of Jazz isn't new either, people have been doing it for years, just that you guys don't look hard enough and consider this the innovation.
All that being said, these guys are alright, but if you want authentic stuff that's covering new ground, there's better
tremendous respect for bbng.. i fucking love jazz and and my love for it originated from 90's hip hop.. and now to hear bbng jazzify hiphop, it's amazing.. the drummer is a fucking boss
to each his own i guess...i love jazz, hiphop (i love music actually) but those covers ain't gonna affect my life the way this coltrane's record did (and still does) i used to think that i was tired of listening to the same old things, that i needed fresh new stuff (i found some but not dozens of albums either) but i always end up goin back to old stuff cause when it's that strong, it's for life...about jazz influence in hiphop, let's face it: instrumental music is more likely to be sampled ;)
Thanks Anthony, I really enjoyed this review (as well as many others)! You're completely right about jazz music's generational shift. I'd really like to see a lot more music like BBNG come out soon.
@huamanJR No, the song itself is old, but him and the guys in the band actually performed it live like a week ago when Tyler was in Toronto, that's the first time they actually collabed in person. Look it up.
@huamanJR So what? It sounds awesome, and they really throw a jazzy-vibe into the beat. And they recorded "Fish" too, but they haven't uploaded that one yet. They're more than likely gonna work together when Tyler wants to do his whole fusion-jazz album.
@Hockeyevan9992 I'm not saying its bad, its just I wished they switched up the beat that's all if they are doing a collab with them. If they do collab for a album then I'll be looking forward to it =)
My friend put me onto BBNG today and I'm in love with them. Nice review too.
Have you thought about reviewing Astronautalis' 'This is Our Science'? It came out recently and did well for its modest means - #9 in Hip Hop iTunes charts on its week of release. I'm not sure where it places at now.
For those who like this LP they may want to look into Moon Germs - Joe Farrell.
I discovered this album just after they had their debut show (wish I had known about it earlier, I was in Toronto that day.) Some of the best new jazz I have heard yet, I will be keeping my eye on them.
This is the best thing I've heard all year. Works equally well as background music as it does an intimate headphone experience. Listening to the Zelda track while walking through the woods near my house alone provided a joyous childlike feeling.
Loved it, absolutely loved it. They fooled me at that zelda tribute song... Didn't realize it was zelda at first, because it was at the end of the track and I was already pretty blown away by how well these guys had played off these other songs. Can't wait for more original stuff from them though
@XtylerwithasilentX Nero's Welcome Reality is really good. you should also check out Porter Robinson's Spitfire, he is this kid on skrillex's new record label and hes only 19 years old!
thanks so much for reviewing this album. this is EXACTLY what i have been looking for. i get sick of indie pop records that all sound the same. i knew there was a reason i subscribed to your channel ;)
@theneedledrop I know right?!?! But seriously, I'm not really into heavy metal or any of its close sub-genres and you review alot of that. I still watch the reviews because they make me LOL, but every now and then you review something I wind up liking. TND forever.
@comerapapita yes, i'm addicted, hahahahahahaahahah. :-P nah, you're comments are most important. you're the most important hater i have. don't forget that. i'd kiss your forehead and give you a hug if you were hear. i want you to know that you're special to me.

...dope album, but Giant Steps in no way sounds like crap. I do agree people need to play new shit though, including BBNG. Cuz lets be honest, no matter how good they flip songs they're pretty much a cover band at this point. Contribute a full, classic album to the spectrum and then, maybe, you can talk shit. Till then, shut up and do your covers and show just a touch of respect for those who came before you.
