Nice review; I just took mine out of storage & it has 2GB of DDR2 ram in it, running the 1.83GHz C2D and just put a fresh install of Windows 7 Pro on it and it runs so smooth. I had to get a new battery ($65AUS), and I'm actually using it for work now.
Battery life is about 4 hours with everything on, but brightness down to 60%.
The one I love about it is that you can dock it, meaning you can expand to a larger display if need be.
@nasa72 Oh yeah, I never got the dock. Just hooked it up like normal. I would suggest a KVM switch if you don't want to spend the money on a dock. KVM switches cost around $15-$400. The one I've seen this Tablet would do well with is a Netgear KVM that is around $20. Not bad. I wished my Tablet had more RAM now that it's running Win7. Needs it. Also, after about 5 years if you have the keyboard off I suggest blowing out the dust. :)
@nasa72 Completely agree. The TC1100 was a very reliable tablet too. It was my first choice when picking out tablets. I just couldn't get over the weak processor.
@DennySkoch As I said privately I got it from the refurbished department of HP. It no longer exists so not sure how one gets a refurbished HP anymore. Sorry.
I didn't understand what you said about memory. You have to undo everything? I didn't get that :( Nice review though. I'm planning to get that pc for drawing
@spiritobscura I meant that if you wanted to expand it the internal RAM strip is hard to get to. You have to remove the key board among other things just to change it out. I wasn't brave enough to do this so I've just been using 1.5 gigs and it has been just fine.
I'm thinking about buying the laptop used(For about 360€ including a new battery), how long is the battery runtime? Is it loud when you type on it? What about the fan noise?
@jeanorwin Great that you are thinking about getting one of these! The battery life will range from 2 to 5 hours depending on a few things: Workload, display brightness, wireless on or off, etc. I have the basic 8 cell (I think) so mine, when new, ranged from 2 to 5 hours. 5 hours if I had the brightness down low, wireless off, and doing only note taking (perfect for school). Fan noise, after 5 years, has gotten louder. Not bad at all. Usually quite most of the time.
Alright, great! Thanks! I might buy this laptop when I need it then, let's see what the market is doing after the CEBIT here in germany/ after Intel releases their new Sandy Bridge CPUs. I don't necessarily need a Tablet, but I'm sure I have a use for it at school.
@jeanorwin In $ that seems high. I would look around some more. The battery has lasted me 5 years. It finally is showing it's age and not lasting more than an hour now. Was around 3 hours in it's prime, so that should give you an idea.
@SwiftJ3DIFelixx Would like to but no sponsors to let me try that. I don't have that kind of money laying around but I do know much about them. The latest Android tablet I would recommend is the Samsung Galaxy tablet. It's very fast and responsive with the ability to "root" or gain superuser access which allows you to customize and tweak to your hearts desire.
@amazingcomputerguy are you kidding? These type(business class)of computers were made to be around for a long while; and when I say long, I mean 10 or more years. Just like the Dell Latitude Laptop family from DELL.So far this computer has 4 years since its release date. Not bad for this little guy's specs, core duo on all its versions. The 4:3 is the one CON that makes the computer look old, when it isn't. If it only had a widescreen. Why HP?, Why?. Overall, a pretty tough little laptop. Later.
@GiantessManiac You can use it for expansions like Ethernet card, modem, card readers, etc. I don't know if it is really useful to average users. Most likely would be used in a professional IT setting to be honest.

I was wondering if you would recommend a TC4200 to someone who will just be using it for general school note taking, writing and web browsing. The reason I ask is because I recently found an off-lease/refurbished one for $299 shipped and just wondered if it was a good deal
I have never used a TC4200 before so I don't know how it will perform. It's using the Pentium M chip, which is slower than the Core/2/Duo, and some of the hardware differs like ram speed and chipset. It may under perform some present day tasks, like one note 2007, which is a hog to run. I think the price is GREAT but priced right for an older system. I don't know what your budget is but my opinion is to look for something a little newer. GO Refurbished. Great deals there.
Hey everyone, who is watching this, I recommend buy the TC4200 digitizer if you ever need to replace yours. This is my 3rd pen replacement and it came from a TC4200 and it is MUCH more sturdy. I would buy that over the TC4400 version, which is very flimsy.
Just traded my iPod for one, great deal. The guy wasn't very smart though; left all his tax information on it... Social Security, banking, everything! lol.
Yeah I love it, just got windows 7 I only have one problem where it doesn't automatically rotate to portrait when I flip the screen into tablet mode. You have any ideas?
@rminb010204 Not sure if I responded yet and if not I'm sorry about the delay. There is not rotate like there was on XP because HP officially does not support Windows 7 on the TC4x00 "YET". If you right click or hold the pen on the desktop and go to graphic options you can change the orientation. If you want to you can add graphic options to the notifications area for quick changes.
I use Windows 7 too, it's really great. Try going to support page in HP's site and get the drivers to support the soft buttons and stuff. All it needs is the HP tablet software for it to do that.
The only thing I do hate about this laptop is the handwriting rec. it doesn't get any of my handwriting. But no when my girlfriend comes she can write out a whole page and it understands every letter. Damn my male handwriting >: /
Too technical of a term for most I guess. PCI expantion is what most would recognize it as. Man you are missing a good deal. It's really cheap if you can find one. Get refurbished, much cheaper and just as good IMHO. I'm still using my refurbished TC4400 you see in the video. It's been 3 years now, no problems.
I guess I babied myself with the X41. Someone who uses the subway everyday though would really know the difference in the weight specially if you're taking the NYC subway system. It's always a hellhole with all the pushing, etc. Plus, I do carry a lot of stuffs so a little bit of tweak in the weight, at least for me, would be noticeable. Yes, the tab is blazing fast now.D heat diminished considerably with the upgrade. Guess, less work inside.Xtended bat is $105, +6 hours + reg bat=8hrs. Nice.
Hi, paid $500 for this tablet(ebay) with warranty til 9/09.Took advantage of post TG sale at newegg and got the ram to 4gb(crucial-$51)for a possible update to Vista, & d HD to 7200rpm 3.0 seek/sec 250 GB(seagate-$79). I think my only complaint is that I got so used to x41 (which sucks big time due to the max 1.5gb of ram and 1.8" HD) as to the weight. It's quite heavy on my back (4.6 lbs vs 3.7 on X41).Does it really become hot to touch? Where do u find cheap batteries/charger for this?TNX
Wow, good deal considering what I paid for it. I have a swiss army back pack with a laptop pocket. I don't really notice it in there unless I have a lot of books or don't carry it with me. If you think about it, what's .9 lbs really? Looks to me like you have quite the sweet tablet. Mine is only hot after a long run.
I need to dust it out TBH. Since I've had it I've never dusted it. That should decrease the heat. Cheap Batt, I would look on HP's site but don't think you will find anything cheaper though.
am a student and have limited resources. There's a tc 4200 tablet for sale in craigslist here i ny. It still has a warranty up to '09. You think it's worth it. It's selling for $450, 512 RAM, 60gb HD, Tablet windows OS. It's pretty heavy though I think for 4.6 lbs since going in and out of the subway with a heavy thing in ur back sucks. TC 4400 sells for $700. Need some power though and I don't know if the 512 can be upgraded to 2GB since u said it's under the KB. Thoughts? Thanks.
I think that with the warranty that TC4200 is a a great deal. If you want more power than the TC4400 is the way to go. Mine has 1gb strip that can be installed easily under the tablet rather than under the keyboard. So I run 1.5GB and it's plenty. I personally like the TC4400 for the updated processor. If you're on a budget then go for the TC4200 and upgrade the memory which is very cheap now a days. If all you are doing is school work or work, the TC4200 should be just fine.
That's the problem. I'm working on RAM hungry softwares. Unfortunately, it needs to be done on a tablet. That means that if TC4200 has 512MB soldered into it then I am just left with 1 more slot. But I cannot find a 2 GB RAM of this kind to fill in the single left slot. My other option is to go for TC1100 which is cheap and easily upgraded to 2GB and the HD to 7200rpm. However, it's an old tablet (but reliable) and I don't know if the processor (1.2Ghz centrino would be able to tackle vista.
I wouldn't recommend vista on TC1100, but Go for the TC4400 and you can upgrade it with the PC2DDR2-5300. A single strip will run you around 15-30 bucks. The TC4200 and the TC4400 are very similar besides the CPU but sounds like you may want to go for the faster of the two.
I really appreciate your comments/views. It has been valuable for making me research more since I'm a newbie with tablets. As I write this, someone just posted Toshiba M400 at a low price of $450, intel dual core 2.2 Ghz, 60 GB 5400rpm HD, 2 GB RAM upgradeable to 4GB with manufaturer's warranty still for 8 months. I know u mentioned issue of screen not sturdy as HP. I guess these specs would leave < 4 me 2 bring out more $ from my wallet.Hope I'm jumping on safe waters. Final thoughts?
