I read this book as a teenager in the mid sixties. Go to the index and look up "medical experiments" and judge for yourself. This section alone distills the pure evil of Nazism. The Nazis were meticulous in their documentation, which greatly assisted the Allies in the post war trials of those vile creatures from pre history.
If you liked "The rise and fall..." then you must read Shirer's "Berlin Diaries". A first person account of an American reporter caught in the middle of the Nazi buildup prior to WWII. Absolutely fascinating.
Read John Toland's "Adolf Hitler" then you can see the bias of William Shirer. Its not a bad book because William Shirer maintains objective view of history in most parts. But he despises Hitler and that shows in his record. Many are misled by the way he portrayed Germany and Hitler. He tells his story not History.
Great book,i was in a friends house & saw it sitting on a book self, i picked it up & read the first few chapters & couldn't put it down! My mate lent it to me & i read it in about 3 weeks. Think i might read it again!
I've read it mate & I have to agree, it's a fantastic read. Lucid, interesting and written in layman's terms. It made quite an impact on me. I've recommended it to friends.
i was thinking about buying the book. i have to finish a couple of books before i start buying more books. i recommend you read war against the weak: eugenics and america's campaign to create a master race by edwin black

You should also read Shirer's other books, especially The Nightmare Years. You're completely right about the way of writing capturing the reader.
