On the other hand some people look very young into their 20s. I read an article by a veteran Chinese male gymnast once who said he could believe the girls were legal because of his own experience. People from his region, he said, were small and often looked much younger than they really were.

Investigation is now expanding to members of China's 2000 Olympic gymnastic team. Yang Yun admitted in a 2007 interview that she was only 14 in the Sydney Olympics however China listed her age as 16 at the time of the games. Dong Fangxiao said in her blog that she was born in 1985 which would have made her between 14-15 years old instead of 17 like China listed her age as at the time of the games. This is not the first time China has "embellished".

Covering up a person's age is not a simple task. The government will probably have to 'silence' like 100,000 people who are related to and or know the atheletes, or these 100,000 ppl must be dumb.

These atheletes depend on their profession for a livelihood. They and their families are probably known by many other chinese ppl making it quite impossible to lie about their age. Would they risk their livelihood by lying and get banned from the sport they have trained for years and dishoner their family? Would the government official be so stupid as to cheat and risk a HIGH chance of being discovered? OR instead just play fair as they have done with the male gymnasts and still win gold?

Yes, but it is all the more motive to keep those types of things a secret. If your family relies on the government and they ask you to lie, you know they are not asking, they are telling you to. Or you have the threat of survival not just for you but all your family. The government knows all your relatives. It is just a perspective to think about. I would not want to think a government can do this, but they do. The public just does not hear about it often.

In a recent interview, 1996 U.S. Olympic Gold medal winnier Dominique Moceanu said that she could flip around better and was more flexible when she was 14 years old than when she was a little older so as you age and gain height and weight, it does factor in.  So I don't think anyone here is saying height is age.

A stack of available documentation shows that China indeed altered the ages of some of its female gymnasts. According to government forms dug up by a variety of media outlets as well as a resourceful Web expert, double gold medalist He Kexin is only 14, and therefore ineligible. On the other hand, according to her most recent Chinese passport and a copy of a birth certificate, she is 16. So whether she is 14 or 16 China lied either way!

All the "Americans are sore losers" comments are funny to me. If it were the other way around, there is no doubt that people would be accusing the U.S. of being a country of cheaters. The American atheletes that took steroids had their medals taken, and some are going to do jail time. Besides, how can we trust China after telling a little girl that she couldn't sing on stage because she was too ugly. Coincidence? It can't hurt to check.

Online documents were found for at least 3 gymnasts stating they were 14 years of age or under. He Kexin's age was stated as 13 only 9 months before the Olympic games. These documents have mysteriously disappeared from the internet. There is no arguing that these Chinese gymnasts are good, but when you are smaller, you have an advantage. It is a fact that Chinese gymnasts are on average 3.5 inches shorter and 30 pounds lighter than American gymnasts.

China's own government said that several gymnasts were going to be underage for these Olympics in 2006 and 2007... and now somehow they are no longer underage.

Just like them to fake it, just like the opening ceremonies with the lip syncing and the digital editing. Remember, this is also the country that forcibly removed/arrested/burned people's homes/threatened Beijing residents and family to make room to plant flowers because their homes were not pretty.

Last time I checked height isn't age. Shawn Johnson is 4,9, and she doesn't have an unfair advantage over Nastia Liukin. In fact, are you people telling me that Nastia and Shawn were better gymnasts at 14 than they are now? That's aboslutely ridiculous. Go and watch their earlier competitions. They are nearly the gymnasts they are now, and they weren't close to being world class senior level gymnasts.

im live in the usa but i am embarrased to even bring this up, right after the fact that the chinese were kicking our asses. age didn't matter before the game, but righ after the chinese girls beat the shit out of us, we started crying and saying that they are underage...we are complaining that little kids are kicking our asses...lol
