The DC-4 does not have reversible props, the DC-6's do. Some DC-6B's have three in windows forward but most have two, as do most DC-7 & DC-7B's. The DC-7C had three windows forward, but some United DC-7's had no windows forward (these were all first class and had extra luggage room between the main cabin and the flight deck, instead of the forward lounge with 8 facing seats.
sure about that? the DC6 is pretty tough and used by bushpilots regulary to do landings such as this. just watch ice pilots. they have DC3, DC4 and C-46 landing on much worse strips. someone who buys a DC6, plans to use it unless he is a retard. planes like this are not meant to sit on a tarmac. these are workhorse and very good for freight.
Normally, he'd turn off deactivate the reverse thrust before it gets sucked into the engines.... I dont see why he held it on so long. Plenty of runway left. Maybe just putting on a show?
Its bitter sweet to see this. I highly dought he will maintain this aircaft for flight. However... if he maintains this for future people to see... it might justify its parking. Either way is acceptible. but to sit and rot like old bike in a garage, not good at all.
You are right twinstu50 the helpers and brave pilot did a great job. Congratulation for saving such a masterpiece. I am from Namibia and we have 2 of those lovely birds. (I hope they have not sold them yet). When I was 9 years old I watched them land and take off from Windhoek Airport to Germany and back.....a 10000 km trip. I just LOVE them.
Amazing footage... Awesome, really. Immediately I thought about dust ingestion by the engines!!! I trust that something does filter the intake air, or else I imagine that could cause some serious wear and tear on the pistons.
This aircraft is to be a static exhibit and this was its last ever flight. The runway was specially constructed for the landing so prop damage not that important.
What is the point to buy this plane but unable to fly out again ??? At first, I was wondering how the plane is going to take off on such a dirt track, so scary......Eddie Lim from Singapore
This DC6 was not ment to take off again on that same airstrip. This airstrip was specially made so that the plane could retire on that farm. this DC6 was bought by a rich farmer.
I have had an interest in aviation since 1955, (I was five then), and, to cut a long story short, inspite or despite of, the money lenders/beancounters, and their myriad sycophants, governmental, legislative, or whatever, the Aviation society fights and prevails.
Holy crap, nearly put it into the trees.Sink rate was too fast too early.Good thing he had enough air speed to pull the nose up,or we would have been watching it crash instead.
That´s what I call "old school" flying skills. Landing a very manual plane on a strip without any electronic guiding systems or aid, just visual with expert knowledge. Respect ! The pilots got to have balls of steel ! Realy nice video !
Beautiful. Word up to the PIC: take the props out of beta range BEFORE the dirt envelops the engines! Of course, perhaps his main concern was the end of the runway. Understood. Just sayin', yo.
In October 1978 a pilot landed a DC-4 without permission at Harvey Airfield in Snohomish, Washington; pictures abound here of the landing, you see people running in all directions and a new Chevy van getting smacked and rolled by a main gear. The left wingtip was smashed. It was (somehow) flown out and up to Arlington, where I saw it up close the next day.
Hmm, interesting to see that nearing the end of the landing roll number 4 prop runs into what seems autofeather. Could be a result of strong imbalance in the torques between the engines on landing, don't think the engine was cool engough to shut down intentionally already. Nice job!
@Sdwr87 and CTFlyer7: the reverse pitch propellers were introduced with the DC-6 in 1946. Search youtube for "Douglas DC-6 New Airliner 1946 Universal Newsreel".
I talked to the engineer of the Red Bull DC-6B and he told me that usining the reverse is mandatory at landing to avoid extreme wear of the brakes.
@Sdwr87 Hi SDwr87, google "historic flight angie baby", first link. And the pistons don't really go in reverse, it's just the prop blade angle that changes to give reverse thrust :)
@CTFlyer7 Thanks, I'm fully aware that the props don't actually reverse their rotation, hence the inverted commas...i just didn't think pistons of that era were designed with a feature that i more commonly associated with turbo-props!..brilliantly timed landing - excellent flying!
@klikhalno Nope, they are definitely pistons (radials). You can hear them at the end idling. Like CTFlyer said, it's just the prop blade angle going into reverse. Not exactly common on modern piston aircraft, but standard equipment on the DC-6
Szczerze gratulujemy Witkowi i jego wspólnikowi! Zdajemy sobie sprawę jakie to było niesłychane i odważne przedsięwzięcie i kto może na "coś" takiego się porwać!

@Truckstone
The two men, and the legion of helpers, are all to be congratulated.
It is a wonderful thing that this historically significant piece of aviation history is now preserved, and able to be seen by future generations.
That her last flight was to a well deserved, safe, respectful retirement, is befitting.
At 6 years old, I saw my first BIG aeroplane, (a Connie).
Love, the sight/smell/touch, I still tremble.
Now, your DC-6,- another child, another me.
