You'll never be able to find out either. In Jazz, there's really no way of telling if you meant to do something. It all really is impulse and being free and flowing. The first thought you have while playing jazz would throw everything off. I do agree that he is still young and that he will learn more over time...But, all musicians (no matter what the age) will still learn everytime they play. Have fun learning !
@digimaton, actually, seeing as it's jazz, I'm pretty sure Cole wants it to sound free, a little unpredictable to some extent, so the timing is not ropey, it's just the way Cole wants it to be.
you are joking right? exceptional drummers, no matter what they do with reference to meter, always maintain a strong sense of pulse, never deviates, there is a distinction, you can hear it. I think Cole hasn't mastered this yet, that's all. Maybe you are forgetting that despite his talent, he has much to learn. I don't think that because he's young that he shouldn't be faulted. If an older more established player performed like this he would be ridiculed. This kid will be a great, no doubt.
@digimaton,I know that, and I agree that Cole still can learn a lot. But I somehow got the expression that you exchanged odd accents as bad timing. For example a crash cymbal hit, which could have been timed bad, or maybe Cole really wanted to put it there, one cannot be sure, but sorry for making a misleading comment. :)
It's fun seeing how he's excited and enjoying it. You can't teach that. Honestly, I wasn't very impressed with his playing before age 9-10. I knew he had potential, but I just didn't see it being exhibited in the earlier videos. At this point (to me) it's really blossoming. When he learns or gets a better feel for dynamics he'll be incredible. I look forward to seeing where life takes him in the future.
