  • Flashback to 2004!

I had a rig built in preparation for Half Life 2 (among other games), and it had 1GB memory, an Intel Pentium 4 3.0GHz processor, and the Radeon 9800xt. That was when it came out. I think it was something insane like $600.

That machine was a beast. I maxed Half Life 2, but just barely. It was very demanding in every sense, physics being one of them. It had moments of slowdown, though that setup pretty much blew through anything that came out around that generation.

  • @PurpleHoneyBear Prior to that I had only used Apple computers. So I had an Apple II in the mid 90s, and later on I used a few different Macs. iMac, for one. Good times.

  • Ati rage 3d (4 mb), Elsa gladiac geforce 3, Asus Radeon EAH2900XT, Asus radeon EAH4870 (current) next up? Maybe hd6990?

  • My list: onboard random intel, 3dfx Vodoo 8 mb, 3dfx vodoo 2 16mb, Matrox G400, Geforce Ti4200 (MY GOD WHAT A BLOW!), Geforce 8600 GTS, Ati Radeon 4850, Ati Radeon 4870x2 (that was one powerhungry bitch, but powerful indeed), Ati Radeon 4890 Vapor-X

  • My List Diamond Steal 2mb Vid card, 3DFX Voodoo 2 in sli, Geforce 2 Ultra, Geforce 4 MX460, Geforce 4 TI 4600, Geforce 5950 Ultra, Geforce 6800LE, Geforce 7900, Geforce 8800GT, Geforce 9800GX2, Radeon 4890 Vapour X and currently using a 5870 Vapour X

  • 3dfx banshee - geforce2 mx 440 - Radeon 9600GT (short lived, and faulty) - Radeon 9550 - Geforce 7300 GT - Radeon HD 4670 - Geforce GTS 450. I want my computer to be able to play games, but I don't build them specifically for that.

  • I have one more to add to the video. I just bought a Radeon HD 6970 and it should be arriving shortly.

  • Let's see now. I started at a 3dgx voodoo then a voodoo 2 then a second voodoo (damn game persuaded me to buy) then a banshee, then a nx6600 zero then yesterday I bought a gtx 470. Also someone gave me a geforce 2mx. My 470 would squash that thing lol

  • my collection of video card starts at Voodoo II Sli and then i started collecting Geforce series but only the Ultra models or top models... so far i got Geforce256, Geforce2 Ultra, Geforce3 Ti500, Geforce4 Ti4600, Geforce FX 5900 ultra and 5950, Geforce 6800 ultra, 7 series I dont have yet. I do have 2 8800 ultras, and a single geforce gtx480... i need to complete my collections of the rest of the card i am missing but its expensive. right now i cant afford another gtx480 :(

  • @bluedawn249 wow, memories. I still have the same 8800gts, im using it right now!

    My history of Graphics cards:

    radeon 9600

    radeon hd2600pro

    radeon hd3650

    radeon HD4670 ACTUAL CARD

  • the fx series was fucking terrible haha, no doubt. after the 6 series though, nvidia got really really good again.

  • Voodoo was my first graphic accelerator:) but now i like my 8600gts:) athlon 64 4000+, 3gb ddr

  • Yeah that brings me back. Going from a no-name chip to an ATI Rage 128, 3DFX Voodoo 3 2000 PCI, nVidia GeForce FX 5600, ATI Radeon X850PRO, and an nVidia GeForce 8800GTX which is what I currently use. Looking at a 295GTX for my next card which is even more rediculous than all the others. I was seriously considering a Voodoo 5 5500 way back when they came out, also. External power supply for the card ftw.

  • my first computer specs

    amd 1600+ running @1.4ghz

Nvidia Geforce2 64mb no tv out lol

    256mb of pc133 ram

  • my current video card goes between banshee and 9800pro :)

  • when you put it that way i might jump off a cliff

  • I hate that part about the 8800, that its so f-n big.

I had to buy 4 fuckin' chassis before i found one it fit inside! >;/

  • In this 2001 dell 8200, I started with:

    Nvidia Geforce 2 64mb

    Nvidia Geforce 3 Ti200 64mb

    Nvidia Geforce 4 Ti4600 128mbs

    ATI Radeon 9700pro 128mbs

ATI Radeon 9800 All in wonder 128mbs

    Nvidia Geforce 7 7600GT 512mbs

    Nvidia Geforce 6 6200OC 256mbs (Current)

I decided to go back down, b/c the ATI 9800and Geforce 7 card lived a short life b/c of my only 300 watt ps :(

  • Fuck all of you, I have no graphics card on my PC. Beat that, bitches. 8)

  • Impossible,

you need to render 2D objects with a video card.

    pwned.

  • ya you have on board video

  • makes sense, it's not video CARD, it's integrated video chipset

  • well i ment on board gpu

  • I wonder if you could turn that into a leaf blower...

  • The banshee was not the first graphics card with a fan.

Also it doesn´t run at 300Mhz lol It´s running by 100ish or so. It is also the only 3dfx card where GPU and RAM clock can be asynchronous.

And last but definately not least.

THE 3DFX SLI (Scanline Interface) WAS A LOT MORE EFFECTIVE THAN THE NVIDIA SLi (Scalable Link Interface)AND IT WAS USABLE IN E V E R Y GAME.

  • NO! NO NO NO! No Banshee has an SLI-Bridge! The pins you zoomed into have been uses for special Mpeg2 DVD accelerator Cards.

If you try to sli banshees with that connector you could possibly kill them by short circuit.

Sorry, but please inform before disinform...

  • i had a voodoo banshee too, it was my first video card

  • I had the 3dfx card in sli XD i thought i was the shit back in the day

  • lol i never really played games much but i had

    Geforce 7300LE

    Geforce 8500GT (current)

and im ordering the 8800gtx so i hope its a good as they say it is :)

  • nah mate, get the Geforce 9 series.

  • you should stick the 3dfx Voodoo 5 6000 right at the end. That thing will dwarf all the other cards!

  • Voodoo Banshee does NOT work in SLI, nor does it contain a Voodoo 2. It's also a piss poor example of what 3Dfx could do, except for its incredible 2D performance.

Furthermore, 3Dfx SLI and nVidia SLi are two completely different things. nVIdia does not own the IP rights to SLI, and their multi-card configurations do not use it. They use AFR, and simply named the implementation "Scalable Link Interface" and abbreviated it "SLi"

  • You are wrong, the Voodoo Banshee was a Voodoo 2, It lacked critical features like Single Pass Multi-Texturing though.

Nvidia also own 3dfx's technology "SLI" (Scan-Line Interleave)

If nVidia did not own the 3dfx Technology dubbed "SLI" they would not be able to use that denomination on there version of the technology, AFR or Alternate Frame Rendering is not the -only- form of Rendering nVidia cards do in SLI mode.

  • I had a 9800 Pro (128MB) It was an awesome card, speedy, fast, It never made it to the overclocking though, It overheated because it had problems with the fan, got the fan replaced but when I tried out Half life 2, it was all artifacted, That sucks cause it's a rare expensive card these days too. For me, a large step in gaming, because before it was 2MB integrated graphics card on this old ass PC I had, I used to play doom and stuff, oh the old days. Now I play on an EVGA 8600GT 256MB

  • 3dfx FTW!

srsly though, THAT CARD IS A MONSTER. If only 3DFX were still in business, then they'd kick the asses of ATi and Nvidia still probably.

  • truth, I also had that Trident shit. But the really first "3D" step on the PC was the Pentium MMX hahahaha. What a shit it was.

I had a Voodoo 1, than a Voodoo 2, than a Voodoo Banshee, then an ATI TNT2, then a Geforce1, Geforce 3, Geforce 4, Radeon 9600 PRO. And I am stuck with the 9600 till now, although I already ordered another 9600... this time a Geforce 9600 :)

  • so lucky. ive only owned the trident, the 3dfx voodoo 3 3500 agp (which was amazing), i dont remember what i got after that but now i have had this geforce 4 mx crap for a long time because i am waiting to be able to buy a new computer before i get a new sweet video card, being that my computer is 8 years old now

  • Nice comparsion.

  • LOL see on the voodoo..it has 8x 2mb sticks lololol

  • Why does the video card need to be SO BIG!!

  • shits gotta go somewhere

  • Good god, that thing looks like it's own laptop.

  • It would be funny looking back on the 8800 GTX in 8 years time. It'll probably be something like $35 lol

  • in 8 years? feces will be worth more.

  • haha loved it man: "helped me waste away... a good part of my life". i had no idea the 8800 was that huge, esp next to a 7800gt! these videos are always enjoyable, keep it up!

  • its not the size, its how you use it..lol

  • damn gaming for 10 years

  • ATI Rage 8mb was where it was at. Played Half-life like a dream

  • omg i have an ati rage 8m mb i played half life on it

  • where's the Trident 1mb ISA? :/

  • I used to have a 2mb trident with a 4mb matrox m3D powerVR card but I couldn't find them

  • dude are those the only cards you have? or do have more in your home? I really like old tech and seeing the progression into modern technology. please post all your old gear if you have any.

  • Hey numnuts the nub, the first card to ever support sli was the geforce fx which came out 3 or 4 years after the voodo banshee.

  • spunkx100, im not sure if your repying to the video or a comment, but he only said that it was the first to support a heatsink fan, he didnt it was the first to support sli.

  • he said it supported sli yet the concept of sli was not even conceved untill the geforce4 and the first sli card was one of the late fx's

  • i just researched it and 3dfx was trying to make an early system like sli. it wasnt till the 6600 that sli was realesed

  • check wiki, voodoo used (SLI) scan-link interface while nvidia uses (SLI) scaleable-link interface. (I thinks thats what they are)

  • i have the 6600. No SLI plug!

  • I think its only special 6600's

  • Yes, might B so.

  • special edition

  • Yep.

  • The GeForce FX series certainly DID NOT support SLI. None of them...3DFX was the first company to make a dual-card system, SLI (Scan Line Interleave). After 3DFX was bought by Nvidia, Nvidia revamped the original SLI concept and developed Scalable Link Interface. They first used it in the GeForce 6 series...not the FX series!

  • WOW your browing my friggin mind I talk about 3DFX all the time i had a banshee3 card agp card and was dying to get a voodoo5500 card with 512mb ram on it but of course 3dfx was shut out because they never tied their cards to a system like ati and nvidia did...im still pisssed it too almost 10 years after them being bought out to get a 512mb card...so sad.

  • thats what ive already stated

  • words can't describe how annoying and nerdy you are, jackass.

  • he's like a sevierly water'd down Maxishine for nerdy pc nub's

  • hahah thats what ive been sayin.

  • oh, and my first comment was to the great seahawk nub

  • yes he is an uber noob.

  • asomer

  • him saying awesomer wouldn't have been funny, but he said it twice, so basically he has no idea what hes saying, this guy pisses me off.

  • ill bet this guy gets lots of pussy with his awesome video cards!!!

  • what card doesn't get the job done in Doom...

  • Brilliant comparison!

  • You missed so much out. Voodoo 1,2,3,4,5, TNT/TNT2 etc etc...

  • He doesn't have every fucking card dumb shit...

  • Doesn't mean he couldn't have at least mentioned them, the title does say from 3DFX to 8800GTX does it not?

Don't call me a dumb shit you stupid ignorant foul mouthed noob!

  • yes that is the title but hes only showing off the video cards he has. If the title had been "The history of video cards: 3DFX to G8" then you'd be correct.

  • The title implies it.

  • yes it does imply it but He is just showcasing the cards he owns. both right and both wrong w/e its over.

  • I know he's showcasing his cards but I think the video would have been better with the other cards in it. Even if he doesn't own them he could have screenshots and talk a little bit about them.

  • yeah it would have been better if it was a history of cards but sadly it is not. and i also just noticed this video is 9 months old so I doubt he even reads these comments and therefor wouldn't take our advice im gonna see if there is somesort of biopic on GFX cards.

  • Great Video Thanks :D

  • holy shit voodoo? i have one of those in my old geforce 5200 box lol along with some other old cards.
