deaddoc - that is Earl Scruggs on boogie-woogie guitar. He was Maybelle Carter's next-door neighbor. They often jammed together. You can't overstate the importance of these two giants of American music, and what you're hearing is Rock and Roll in its purest form. This is amazing.
Everyone credits many of the blues men in influence in guitar. Yet Maybelle and Sister Rosetta Tharpe are as influential as any of the delta blues guitarist on early blues, rock, and bluegrass.
I don't think anybody who's paying attention - particularly to country music - underestimates Carter's influence. Tharpe is a real guitar hero, but not so well-known - and her style didn't exactly originate something in the sense that Maybelle's thumb lead or Scruggs' banjo picking did. She's still amazing, and a great, original artist, and I'll bet B.B. King would agree. I love Memphis Minnie, too, even if she isn't as famous as her contemporary, Brownie McGhee.
Tharpe didn't originate anything? Good God, she invented Rock and Roll. No small amount of influence on Johnney Cash either, as he opend praised her, and spoke of her influence. Her record during the beginning of ww2 is recognized with being the first recorded record with the "Rock and Roll" sound. Rock has as much or more of a Gospel heritege as it dous the blues if that's true.
Interesting, it is possible to hear that rock rythum in the bass guitar, as it was first appearing at the time this was made. I wish I knew something about how they decided to use it.
@ilovechugs They are playing this in the key of D. Earl in open D and Maybelle is playing in C , capo on 2nd fret (making it D). Hard to tell because I couldn't see her G chord, but then I noticed she's making a G7. (CF&G7).
@ivehadit1 looks really have nothing to do with musical talent, unless you watch MTV or other such bullshit. Her voice is quite bad, I agree, but at least she's singing lyrics of her own...unlike most modern female "performers".
@kokoheal I agree about her voice, though its a lot better than most people, though when she was younger she had a wonderful voice.... she is the one who taught all 3 of her daughters to sing. look at how great anita carter sings.
Great to see Earl Scruggs playing guitar with one of his earliest musical heroes, even before he took up banjo, Maybelle Carter. Interesting that the syncopated beat set by the bass gives the song an almost calypso sound.
This is excellent! Maybelle sings & plays this better than anyone! She knew how to dress nice too. ...Jake sort of uses a syncopated style on bass,; sounds GREAT, which Jake also does on "Thunder Clouds of Love" by Hylo Brown. Jake also gives great bass- pizazz on Josh's "Carrol County Blues". Way-to-Go, Jake and Maybelle!
I love Mother Maybelle. I recon there`s more of her style of picking to be heard in Bluegrass than Country music. Jimmie Rodgers style, in my opinion, seems to have been a bigger influence in Country pickers. By the way. There can`t be many clips out there that show Earl Scruggs pickin` a guitar?
@Mouldytone Check out the reissues of the F&S TV show, about 6 volumes on Shanachie CDs. Earl played a lot of guitar on that show and he played it just like he played his banjo.
What a great picker. This is country, not bluegrass. Bluegrass was invented by Bill Monroe. Some argue that the Carter Family pretty much invented country music. Lots of country blues in that picking style with the alternating bass line played with the thumb. No one else plays so much melody on the bass strings.
if u listen to their music ule be dumbfounded how mother mb could pick. in fact, i think she is one of the top pickers their ever was. she is credited as one of the early pioneers of country guitar AND she had a style only seen in many of the black blues artists of the time. my mom played like her. she said she could use her nails better. dolly parton tends to play like that when she is just her guitar. MMC the surgeon on a bluegrass guitar!
Any Virginia boy worth his salt knows about Momma Maybelle. Maybe not the ones from the other side of the Blue Ridge but the ones on the Great Valley side do.
Earl Scruggs and Lester Flatts performed and wrote many songs before the beverly hillbillies. They did play the songs on many of the shows. But did not become famous because of the show, they already were famous because they were so talented.
exactly my grnadpa love s big band but i agree with my other grandparents this is country now reba and shania twain are good but this and dolly are better thanks for sharing!!
I never suggested that they weren't. I, however, am familiar with them exclusively through the theme song and appearances they made on the Beverly Hillbillies.
Thanks for posting this video. It is an excellent performance and also historic since it shows Maybelle Carter and Earl Scruggs playing together as they often did since they were neighbors. I really enjoy listening to this video, thanks again for sharing this lovely song!
Well...I respect her a lot and this video makes me want to cry...as this type of music is practically gone forever - replaced by big band - techno - over done productions of songs that can't match this soul. And I don't even like country western or folk music - but I do say this genre will live forever.
@Lonestarry I'm 25 and British and love this stuff. I don't think the Carter's music will ever die! Put this on big screen and when Maybelle looks straight at the camera at .55 seconds it's like being right there with them all. I hope to visit Maces Springs someday...
@henrydemonfreid1985 I hope you get to Maces Springs someday soon, henrydemonfreid. And I think someone as young as yourself loving this type of music is wonderful and refreshing.
Great Video!! Love this... Please click on my name to watch a modern day video trubute to Maybelle Carter's "Will The Circle Be Unbroken" sung by 17 year old Michelle Lea.
Her L-5 Gibson was bought by a private investor for $575,000 and placed in the Smithsonian institute. She was a great musician and a humble person. You could tell that she never felt real comfortable with all the attention that she received.
I can't help but love the fact that she's a woman who gets credit for her talent, without resorting wearing a low cut top, etc.
Like Joan Armatrading, she's virtuosic in every regard, yet I hadn't really heard of her, until I discovered her on youtube. How sad is that? I'm gonna try to learn this and post a response. :O)
I have been listening to and watching her pick for 50 years, and I am still just as amazed and thrilled as I was the first time I heard her. She was an incredible musician, especially for her day and time, and she set the standard. She was also an AWESOME human being. This is one of the best clips of Maybelle on YouTube. Thanks a million for posting it. FIVE STARS!
