Funded by the Federal Government? No wonder Gov. is BROKE. and the economy SUCKs. Fix the damn roads in Hawaii first!!! so many pot holes with Mickex Mouse patch jobs.
Hawaii is broke. Infrastructure is crumbling and outdated. We cannot even afford to have students in school for five days per week. The rail is great in theory, but is a terrible idea for Oahu. You build a city around mass transit. You do not build mass transit around a city. Especially a city that has no money.
The majority of people screaming pro rail have a financial interest. The unions and the contractors want the work. That does not make this project good for Oahu
@sharkrage11 Lol... but the oil companies don't have a financial interest?? Do you work for an oil company??
Funding for rail will be supported by the federal government, decrease traffic, reduce air pollution, reduce global warming, take money away the oil companies, and reduce traffic fatalities. Plus, it simply is faster for consumers, rather than sitting in bumper to bumper traffic. Rail works very well in Japan, China, and Europe.
this is a joke, a money pit. Why build something that will not help the traffic? People are still going to use their vehicles. The city and county can't take care of the roads and highways and now they are going to buid a rail system that no one can use until its completed. What a waste of time and money.
Light rail will be the train to nowhere? The unions will have us over a barrel because it will be useless until finished, unlike if they started in China town and worked their way out to Kapolei. This way it will take traffic off the road as soon as the first two stations are connected. As planned its BACK ASSWARD.
If the rail construction started in China town and worked it's way out to Kapolei then it could take cars off the roads from Kalihi to Pearl City and all points in between. This plan will take people off the road and benefit every driver down the road by making their commute less congested.
Instead the plan it to start in Kapolei and when the money runs out we will have a train from Kapolei to possibly salt lake which will help no one. The current plan is ass backward
who the hell is going to ride this white elephant??? And the cost to build it??? We are talking over $5,000 for every single man, woman and child that resides on the entire island of Oahu. That's over $17,000 for a single household... and only 5% of the people on this island will actually ride it. We're going to tax our children for generations to come... just to benefit the unions, developers, and handful of greedy politicians and landowners.
@jasonaono Yes, I think a trillion dollars in imported oil is fine! How else can money be raised to fight these wars against the US? Those other places with all those successful systems, well people here are different! They like traffic jams, stop and go traffic. And if we build more roads we can pay ten times what a rail system will cost. I agree with you. The biggest problem Phoenix and Minneapolis has it turns people a way at stations. Cause the trains sold out.
I'm a local boy originally from Maui & lived on Oahu for 6 years during my UH years.
Whether you like it or not, Sky trains will be needed for the future as more people populate the island.
I have been in Bangkok Thailand for 10 years. They have an efficient Sky Train that really helps to get to places faster since the traffic is on of the worst in the world.
TOURISTS luv rails. care for your TOURISTS DOLLARS, ITS THE tourists that support HAWAII'S tourism. BUILD THE rail. tourists will come. tourists get tired of driving in HONOLULU intl to waikiki. build the rail, WE WILL COME
@hulaelephant You'll have your wish with the higher fuel prices coming. Most air service will be gone. Not bankrupt, gone. The routes to Hawall will be last to go. But anything that burns alots of oil like airplanes and cars will be in BIG trouble. Just wait till the recession is over, they don't last forever never have. You won't believe the price of gas!
@Fattyhaterz Well your right it should be free, but the highway lobby which owns the government transporation policy would never allow that. They will try to keep fares as high was possible so driving looks better. Check out "taken for a ride" or "a streetcar named denial" right on youtube.
In Hawai'i the facts are always bent or twisted a certain way so that it may appeal to those that will benefit from it!!! I know people hate sitting in traffic but you know what thats just what happens when you put too many things on one tiny island!!! and i hate that fact that the Pali tunnel and likelike tunnel were brought up how were we suppose to get over the mountain?? the main reason for the H3 was for the military and many were against because of the sacred grounds it goes over!!!!
Just think about it logically instead of emotionally..
Also the cost per household will be thousands of dollars. If you are already having trouble making ends meet do you really want to add more weight on your back?
I know Mufie thinks hes being picked on because hes Samoan but really what kind of fool would pick on a 7 foot tall Samoan??
I support Rail Transit. I live in Ewa Beach and therefore I understand that traffic can be really bad with more cars. My mom works at Hickam (Which is just across Pearl Harbor from Ewa Beach) but has to drive around Pearl Harbor like being in San Fran w/out the Golden Gate Bridge. Also, when she leaves in the morning, she gets stuck in traffic more in Ewa than on the H1. I personally think it's a waste of gas if just 1 passenger is in a car, adding on to congestion on the road.
Before announcing your support for rail transit, consider what your life would be like if we built a better alternative instead. An expanded express bus system on a HOT lane could bypass much of the Ewa traffic and drop her off close to where she works. It is doubtful that the rail line will be near where you guys live and work, so in order for her to take rail to work she would have to transfer to buses twice in each direction! Buses are the faster, more convenient option.
Cars get one passenger mile per gallon of fuel. Because most cars have only one driver in them. A bus can get maybe 100 with people standing..a city bus. Palour buses get lots less. Maybe 20 PMPG. Commuter rail with one engine can carry 5000 people a mile on a gallon of fuel. Burlington Railroad did this years ago in Chicago. If the train is electric it just blows the PMPG off the chart because it doesn't use oil at all. A road lobby nightmare!
I hope to be going to UH Manoa soon but all I'm worried about is getting stuck in traffic. I believe many students and others, from where I live, would choose to take a rail system over driving and using up gas just to go to school/work/etc. and back. Rail will always be on schedule and convenient for the busy person having to be on time, everyday.
Keep in mind that every train would stop at every station, so the average speed of rail is about 22 miles an hour. But if we had express buses coming directly from each Ewa neighborhood, using a HOT lane and then King/Beretania(with efficiently timed lights,) and not stopping until the UH area, you could get to class a lot faster than on a train (which doesn't even go to UH according to the initial plan.) Rail is not part of an efficient mass transit plan for Honolulu. it can only be wasteful.
So when you say express buses, do you mean there's going to be an extended, long bus for each town on the Leeward side?
I usually hate catching the bus because it gets crowded a lot. And if a bunch of ppl from where I live had the same class at school, we would all have to crowd on the bus at the same time. Though I wouldn't mind catching the train and leaving a little earlier to go to school or for another destination. There should be more space.
hello!! do you think the rail will NOT be crowded? if they are planning on taking the cars off the road...trust and believe...the rail WILL be CROWDED!
@hulaelephant Most of the new systems are built too small and cheap, because of these anti-rail lobbyist. That run the government transportation policy and spin false information. Hey they make trillions of dollars ayear on the car depend US. Why would they want a change?
The Phoenix system as of Feb 2010 has taken 11 million car trips off the roads! You are right. It also removed lots of smelly empty buses at the same time. Taking up space on the highways.
Sounds like you need express tracks built with your rail network. So you can have high speed express RAIL service. With connecting light rail with approach lite traffic lights so the trains will always have green lights. Rail really isn't mass transit it's rapid transit, just remember there's nothing rapid about buses.
Everyone just needs to see the different perspectives of how rail transit can affect the lives of many other people such as students, laborers, professors, and more. Mine is of a student's point of view. It is time for Oahu to step up in transportation. Eventually, this island is going to need a mass transit system to transport the growing population of the Leeward district to town and back. This can bring the island closer without the long wait.
Actually the growing population on the leeward side is a good reason NOT to build rail, if growth is managed correctly. Plans exist to turn Kapolei into a "second city." A fully-functional Kapolei would reduce the load on H1. After all, when your college, doctor, job, shopping centers, and home is on the leeward side, why bother with H1 traffic? A developed leeward side reduces traffic, and an Oahu with less congestion has no need for rail.
I will have to wait until Kapolei is a full mirror-image as Honolulu. Especially if UH West Oahu will be exactly like UH Manoa, then I will consider confining myself to the Leeward side. But there will still be reasons for me to travel to town.
Traffic will only get worse if we build the rail and ignore real solutions to congestion. Re-time the lights, get the uninsured off the road, and build a real express bus system. Buses on a HOT lane could get more people downtown faster than this rail system, would help us conserve energy (and yes, gas) and would be FAR cheaper. The answer is BUSES!
Then when the HOT lane fails we can make it a plain highway! Presto we get more roads! Sounds like light rail should be a part of this picture. Buses instead of trains? Let's see ...it might take 20 buses with 20 drivers with 20 gas tanks to carry the people a 5 car electric train does with one operator? I don't know? Don't sound very cheap to me? A smelly bus or a electric train? I'll take the train.
who are these people ? they are nothing, they are micro or filipino niggers pretending to be hawaiian and living in and under usa flag in hawaiii , holding a usa passport but calling us haloe ? so i call them NIGGERS ,bum piece of shits

Rail sucks! It's a huge eyesore and a big financial bomb shell. Also, the lady doesn't need the rail because she needs the exercise! Get on a bike and shed those pounds! Mufi brought former DOT's? They're so old, they don't know what they're talking about and they're stubborn.
This Rail system won't work. Mayor Mufi's pet project that's going to put the people of Hawaii in debt. Who wants a rail in their backyards? Not Me! People only hope that their neighbors going to use the rail while they themselves will still drive into town. What they should do is increase the express bus service from the west side, Ewa Beach,Kapolei,Waipahu,etc... and make only Bus lane during peak traffic hours(both am & pm). Or change state workers or schools hours. THAT'S WHY HARD!!!
Funded by the Federal Government? No wonder Gov. is BROKE. and the economy SUCKs. Fix the damn roads in Hawaii first!!! so many pot holes with Mickex Mouse patch jobs.
